I was under the weather when I shot today's video and right after I came down with the flu. Yikes! Nevertheless, this was a very fun collaboration with my dear friend, Kim. Be sure to check out her video th-cam.com/video/j6F_ovgiCKw/w-d-xo.html and tell her I said, "hello". Thank you for watching and welcome to everyone coming over from FREE TO FAMILY. I would love to know where you choose to spend and where you choose to save. Let us know! Love, Jennifer
Viruses 🦠 like to hang out in the ears, nose and throat, so try using colloidal silver in your ears- flood each ear for 5 minutes, and spray your throat and up your nose. We do this for all patients that come through our clinic, and it really helps a lot. Get well soon.
For me it all comes down to your last point. Being content. Yes girl!! Preach!!! I was panicking over a velvet bed spread that I wanted. While making my bed the next morning I realized that the spread on my bed was the one I panicked about last year and it still looks amazing. Wake up call. I realized that my want will never end if I keep feeding it. I'm working on contentment and taking care of what I have instead of wanting, not needing, more. I could go on and on about the eye opener that bed spread situation was.😂😂 Thanks for sharing. Have a good day.
I splurge on... • an excellent haircut • quality shoes • key wardrobe pieces. Usually, if not always, they come from consignment or vintage. These kinds of purchases happen very rarely for me. • A ballet/dance class. I had a gym membership and I didn’t make good use of it. So a dance class is my passion & my gym time! Where I save... • Exercise. I now run. It’s free! It also adds to my cardio along with my dance classes. Nails. I enjoy doing my own nails. I rarely paint them because I’m busy with kiddos-no chipped nails please! Hair color. I use colored, temporary colored glosses. I am looking to go more natural. I have never had my hair dyed professionally because of the cost AND finding a decent color specialist. box colors are much better these days but the results can be tricky to get right. • clothes. I mainly buy from Target, H&M, consignment, vintage. (I’m not promoting fast fashion but it’s what I can afford right now.) I keep my pieces in good condition and therefore a long time. I hunt for pieces that look timeless. You can achieve an edgy, high quality look with low end pieces if you know what to look for and how to build an outfit! • Food. We don’t eat because we like to cook as a family, it’s healthier for us as a family, the time spent is more meaningful and intimate at our own table. It’s waaaaay cheaper! Added bonus, we live on lots of land that we are able to cultivate a garden-we are trying anyway! Those are some of the ways we are saving.
I have spent more money than I care to admit on yarn but I create handmade items to give and sell. It’s truly the best therapy to spend time making something beautiful with my hands, it’s calming to my mind and soul.
Jennifer you are such a blessing. We are on a strict budget. I work part time so I can spend a lot of time at home. I love being home. But I want to live an elegant classy life without a lot of money. So your channel is beautiful and I enjoy it so much. Thank you. And you look so pretty. I love the look with the dress and lovely pearl necklace. God Bless. Thank you 💕
I find beautiful china, lace tableware and occasional beautiful jewelry and clothes at estate sales. If you train your eye towards beauty, deals can be found. I always wash everything immediately upon arrival.
I’m also a big fan of Victoria magazine. I started buying it 30 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child. I used to save it for my kids’ nap time so I could relax and enjoy the beautiful photos! It took me to another world beyond dirty diapers and a messy house. Now I splurge on Country Living - British edition - so I can pretend I live in the English countryside!!
I splurge on high quality produce and foods at the grocery store and cook inventive and fun meals at home. I read once that the quickest way to dissipate money was to eat out often. Further, eating at home saves on medical bills as I have suffered from stomach ailments when eating outside often. Once I started cooking, the stomach problems ceased.
I loved your advice at the end about feeling the burn and waiting it out. Impulsive shopping has gotten me nowhere. The guilt and regret I feel when I realize I purchased unnecessary stuff is not worth it! Thank you, Jennifer. Hope you are feeling better soon.
Such a great way to look at saving. I splurge on coffee. When you have to be a work by 6am and it's dark there is nothing like the anticipation of dropping in at my favourite cafe and lining up with the other early bird workers for the best coffee in town. Makes my heart sing . I also have neck and headache problems so have put all other splurgings aside to visit a very highly recommended chiropractor the past 6 months who has been helping tremendously. It's a win win splurge as I have not taken days off work for migraines in a long time.
My area that I like to "splurge" on is candles. I wait till B&BW is having one of their sales, and then I'll stock up on some candles. Having a wonderful scent permeate throughout the house is such an easy way to uplift and beautify any space!
This is a great video! One thing I splurge on is eating out at ethnic restaurants. It is our way of traveling the world. I have decided to stop coloring my hair and go silver. This will save A LOT of money!!
A very thought-provoking video! I lost everything in The Crash of 2008 -- my career, my retirement investments, health insurance, etc. Fortunately, I had no consumer debt, a very affordable house, and a paid-for car. To adapt to a significant reduction in income, I started making all my own cleaning & laundry solutions and skin care products. I gave up meat and single-use paper products, started growing my own vegetables, made nearly food item from scratch, and started buying designer attire and high-end household items at a local upscale thrift store. The result is that I live quite well on exactly half my Social Security retirement income. It CAN be done!
*YESSS!!! The QUEEN of chic has spoken! Love this so much! Thank you for this collaboration Jennifer; getting our money right couldn’t be any chic-er!!!* 😉❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Jennifer for this video. It’s great that you told us how you save and what you spurge on. People are sometimes uncomfortable talking about money so thank you for doing this video. I do all our cooking at home and I believe as you have stated this is a great way to save money. I buy gently used high quality clothing on eBay for myself and my grandchildren. This saves a lot of money. I color and cut my own hair..also a big savings. I spurge on having clothing repaired or altered at the dry cleaner if I can figure out how to do it myself. Thank you for making me think and access how I spend and save money.
Hi Jennifer, I've been waiting for videos like this! Being debt free is very empowering and my husband and I have done this throughout our 18 year marriage. I do have things I splurge on such as skin and body care, quality linens, timelines wordrobe pieces and healthy organic food along with a few others. When I do splurge I have no guilt knowing that I'm paying cash and not using a credit card. I would add that we like to pay cash for our cars and keep them for many years. You can get a great car that is a year or two old with very low mileage and save a lot buy paying cash. Just keep saving what would have been your car payment for the next car. Thanks Jennifer!
I love videos like this, Jennifer! 😊 I find that most of what you said lines up with what I do - either we are very similar, or you have greatly influenced me over the last five or six years! 😘 My husband and I began having weekly date nights almost a month ago, and we have eaten dinner at home every time! Once, we went out for dessert, but last time, we simply made coffee and sipped it while walking around a home-improvement store. 😂👍
I love this list! Our family is on a debt free journey as well. My husband finished college and medical school with close to $500k in debt. This month we will be debt free aside from out home and we have a schedule to have our home paid off in under 5 more years. We save money by many of the the ngs you listed. Eating at home, having capsule wardrobes (both us and the kids), coffee at home, no cable service to name some. I also shop second hand for clothes, kids clothes, accessories, toys, and furniture. We shop around yearly for home, car and health insurance, lawn care and other large expenditures. Comparing and changing plans, policies, and/or companies easily has saved us thousands. We utilize our library for books, and events for our 4 kiddos. We learn and tackle many home projects and repairs when we can. We splurge on vacations and trips. We try to take 2 trips a year as a family. My husband and I also splurge on weekend getaways. Right now we don't have childcare for us to go together, but we each take a turn going someplace alone or with a friend to recharge. We also splurge on babysitters so we can have date nights at least twice a month. We also splurge on family memberships to museums, zoos and botanical gardens. We visit them often. Even though we eat most meals at home, we do splurge on eating out with one kid at a time as a date day. My husband and I take turns taking one of our kiddos out alone on a date. With four kiddos, time spent with them where they can have our undivided individual attention is important to us.
I've been splurging on Kate Spade bags lately but I wait until there's a big 75% sale. I've been watching Dr. Dray, a dermatologist on TH-cam, and I no longer waste my money on expensive eye or night creams. Good video as always Jennifer.
Enjoyed your financial video. What's a splurge for one person is a necessity for another. Things I don't spend any money on: coffee, wine, beauty treatments, retail prices, expensive items just for the designer label. I spend money on eating out. It's my special treat to me. Someone else does the cooking, cleans the dishes and I just enjoy the atmosphere and food. It's also my quiet time. I can relax. And someone serves me. I truly am a happy person at the restaurants!!! Lol lol lol.❤❤
Hi Jennifer, hope you and your family are feeling much better! Something i do splurge on is my gym membership, the classes are so motivating and just feel so much better after a good work out! One way in which we save is that we enjoy cooking at home and really don't dine out very often. Thanks again for another interesting video!
I don't think I splurge on much except for the best fresh foods I can afford and my grandkids. Hubby and I are getting ready to take one of our grands shopping for her birthday. We will take her to lunch and out shopping for a few things she needs and wants, like new shoes or a dress or a set of paints & paper or books. We want our birthday shopping to be helpful to her family's budget and fun for us and for her. I loved your comment on being ready to put the winter clothes away -- "feel the burn."
You KNOW I love this video! ;) We choose to spend money on our home/property since its where we spend most of our time. We buy high quality, healthy food and supplements to stay well! We buy high quality clothes BUT on discount. We avoid eating out because its expensive and not great health-wise. We also choose less expensive but highly enriching trips and vacations over spendy trips like Disney or other amusement-type experiences. So, overall we prioritize health and wellness (including mental health) and fun and food at home over the latest fads or twaddle experiences. lol We are such peas in a pod!! xoxo
I paint my own nails at home. I love thrift shopping for my clothes, as well as shopping at Walmart and Target for my clothing too. I love buying books through flea markets or garage sales, or thriftbooks! I don’t really spend much money or shop very often. But I did go shopping a few weeks ago and started buying for my spring and summer 10 item wardrobe! I can’t wait to start wearing those clothes because I’m also getting tired of my fall/winter wardrobe haha.
This is how I save money :) I bring my own food to work, I don't buy it in food stores or in bakery. I cook at home and bring it the next day to work for lunch. I don't go out during the weekends (at night), that's not my style and also have 2 kids so it is nice for me to stay at home. We have a coffee machine at home so we don't go outside for a coffee on a regular basis. I use my washing machine during the night (after 9p.m.) as the electricity is cheaper then. These are few examples. :) Love you ❤️
I hope you’re feeling better! I splurge in skincare. I used Lancôme for years, then decided when I retired last year to try drugstore skincare to save money and my skin suffered So I’m back to Lancôme. Also, I try to buy second hand when I can, but I will buy new better quality handbags, shoes and some clothing, like coats. I try to buy end of season when things go on sale. My shopping is focused. My biggest way to save is not to shop. Not going to the mall just to look, or go online and just browse department stores. Plain and simple, not being exposed to items I don’t need. To save, my husband and I rarely go out to eat, I make most meals at home. If we are out for like a day trip, I’ll pack food for us in a cooler so we don’t have to stop at a restaurant. We cut our soda consumption. Also, I shop for groceries only once a month, from a master list and then go mid-month to replenish perishable items. I made a price book, and keep track of what groceries cost at various stores, but generally Aldi consistently costs less.
It boggles my mind when some women complain about finances and then you look up and it’s blond hair extension , eyelash extensions and acrylic nails! And Botox and fillers.
Right, I think they need to be more self-aware about their spending. If you really want to save, just get your hair and nails done seasonally. It will save so much I bet.
Jennifer your natural hair color is so nice! I stopped coloring my hair over a year ago - all natural now grey and all. And I love it! I liked all your tips. My splurge is a massage or facial a few times a year or a night out for sushi with friends - which is expensive. I hope you are feeling better.
wish I could remember which travel blog that said, "you know you are packing right when you want to burn all your clothes when you get home." so I think its okay to grow tired of your clothes as the end of the season. When I leave the house I try to have a travel bottle full of tea and one full of water, I am totally out of the habit of stopping at coffee shops. I have a non spill cup that I can just throw in my tote, it was hard to find but I use it everyday, even on Sunday between church services. And keeping a weekly budget meeting with my husband helps me decide where to put the money we have not regret the money we spent. Consistent budgeting has given me freedom with money.
I love going out with my husband and we like Theatre very much. We choose mosty Amateur Dramatics, which are made with passion and cost no entrance fee. We visit also art galeries and museums on Thursday. On that day in our city ( Warsaw, Poland) admisdion is always free. Thank you for your Chanel and lots of inspiration.
Great video Jennifer! I’ve paid attention to those times I feel buyers remorse and choose not to splurge in those areas. Like you said, it’s different for everyone. I love to splurge on my wardrobe because it’s what I love to “study” and master if you will. Learning to dress the body is an art and it brings me great joy to see, wear and feel the “art” created by another and will hopefully lead me to my own line. I think finding something to help with the area you love such as you getting free items on what you like to use is great. This is why I love to sell my items on Poshmark. It is like recycling the money used for what you love, even creating videos based on it helps. This is where I say sometimes you have to spend money to make money, like someone who loves decorating. Ultimately, I think it pays to understand what you really love to spend money on and see if you can somehow make money on what you love and enjoy. This was a fantastic collaboration, I love you both🌹
Sorry to hear your all sick! Praying for a speedy recovering, I love today’s video. We also don’t have TV, I also subscribe to Victoria magazine. I love that it’s beautiful and not filled with adds. The area we splurge is on organic food. I have a food allergy and can’t eat processed food.
One area I cut out in the last year in order to save money was my Amazon Prime membership. Not only do I save the monthly fee, but I was shocked to find out how much less I spend on there when I can’t impulse buy as easily! If I’m ever in a pinch and absolutely have to have something with two day delivery I can restart my membership, but with a little more planning in my life (i.e. birthday gifts) there’s really not much I have to get that quickly.
We are thinking about doing this too. I also learned that even without Prime you can often still get free shipping if you spend a certain dollar amount.
Marisa Stone O'Brien do you want to know what’s funny? The very day I wrote that comment my husband announced that evening that he had signed us back up 😅 I keep meaning to cancel again but haven’t yet.
Lovely video. I am a minimalist. I truly enjoy doing many things myself. I guess you could call me "the homestead connoisseur." This year I'm going to start canning what we grow in the garden, and I'm starting slow. I just started sewing. Not everything, just somethings. I do appreciate good quality clothing, furniture and skincare. I am a minimalist so everything is in moderation.🌹🌿🌹🌿🌹
I do mani/pedis at home, not only to save money, but also for health/cleanliness concerns of the salon operators and procedures. I love the thrill of the hunt for high quality and timeless items in thrift and consignment shops. I eat primarily plant-based, and love to cook and create delicious and healthy meals at home. I splurge on travel - generally, about 4 trips/year.
I love this! I also think all your ‘saves’ are normal and shouldn’t be splurges anyway except once in a while. Being a minimalist has helped with this topic greatly!
Hi Jennifer! I hope that you are feeling better soon! I have been watching for quite a while but this is my first time commenting. I think being content with what you have is the key. We are nearing the end of our debt free journey and we are so thankful to finally be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. My little luxuries are a subscription to Tea Time magazine, a few houseplants here and there and good yarn to knit with occasionally. 😁 We cook from scratch don't have tv,rarely eat out and just really try to enjoy what we are abundantly blessed with.
I’m mostly the same about cafe drinks! It saves so much money! I drink tea, and I can’t always get what I want (tea lattes or milk tea, as it’s usually called here in Korea, made with non-dairy milk), so it’s pretty easy to do! But also, here in Korea, going to cafes with interesting themes is kind of a thing to do, so I will occasionally do that. When I do, I’m always like 😵 when I pay! Lol! I color my own hair and didn’t get a professional manicure till I was in my 30’s! 🤣 I’ve had a few now, but they’re a once or twice a year treat, if that. I am willing to spend on clothes to get higher quality, ethically made products whenever possible. But I also try to use clothing swaps and thrift stores to get as much as we can for our family for a lot less. You make such a great point about contentment! Thanks for always inspiring!
I've recently discovered your channel, and I just wanted to say I love it! Poise, femininity and home making are so often mocked in today's society, as is a gentle appreciation of the arts and culture. I've no desire to be a man, even though I am my husbands main helper on the farm 😉, and it's so refreshing to watch a channel that doesn't apologise for our values. Well done!!!
Hello Jennifer, I'm very new to your channel, recommended by a friend, and am enjoying working my way through your videos while I housekeep! Your book about the France experience was cathartic. We are in the process of finally moving things out that we have accumulated. We tend to spend on books, classes for my daughter, food (cook at home). I like to have good quality items, just fewer. The house has had to wait, but it's now time to focus on it. We do NOT live in a chic house - but we have no mortgage. I think hard honesty is crucial when it comes to spending. What are the desires, what are the perceptions of wealth, what brings joy, what is essential to life? Good food, warm clothes, warmth, safety, beautiful surroundings. The list is pretty short!
Thank you for this video, Jennifer. We try to be conservative with our money. I am a retired teacher and my husband is still working. One thing that we love to spend our money on, which I don't feel is a waste, is adventures/events. We love to go to the symphony, the ballet, sometimes the movies, and plays. I never feel like we are throwing away our money on these types of things. They enhance our lives! :)
What a great video. Down to earth, concise, and really great advice. I love that you don't color your hair. I just get so much from your videos! Thank you
I recently stopped coloring my hair and let the silver come in. We also ditched Netflix recently as well. The price kept creeping up and when I realized we hadn't watched it for several months, we let it go. We also ditched cable tv several years ago. We do enjoy eating out, so that's where we tend to splurge. We also have an older home and are in the process of fixing it up. So a lot of money is going to that now as well. And lastly, we needed a new mattress and so we splurged on a latex mattress with adjustable bases so you can raise your head or your feet however much you'd like. A good mattress is so necessary and conducive to restorative sleep. I hope you're healed from the flu by now. 💟
I would love to see you do an episode doing a thrift store run. Thrift stores are great places for table cloths, vases, tea sets, clothes, handbags, candles sticks and so much more! If you aren’t interested in shopping for yourself, give someone a Madame Chic lifestyle makeover. Shopping second hand is thrifty and green.
We splurge on quality organic food, I enjoy cooking so we eat in most of the time. I am content with my hair, I don’t go to the salon, I like my hair the way it is and only trim it every other month (actually my husband does a great job at trimming my hair). I rub oil on my nails/cuticles at night and that keeps my nails healthy. I do spend $ on quality shoes but enjoy a good bargain on quality clothes online. I enjoy watching your channel, it feels like I’m listening to a friend.
I enjoyed hearing your save and splurge choices. I whole-heartedly agree with not dying your hair until YOU feel that you need to do it. My mom would say don't dye your hair until you absolutely have to because before you know it, you'll be a slave to the dye bottle! My husband and I realized we needed to majorly limit our Starbucks outings when even our (at the time) four year old son had a standard order of milk and madeleines to go with our specialty coffees. We let go of cable TV and our landline phone, which felt great. I've always loved the library. We splurge on going out to eat for birthdays and special occasions, but mostly eat at home. Great for the wallet and the waistline!
I spend good money on organic, pasture-raised food and have since I was a teenager. I think it has been an insurance policy of sorts. “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. Other splurges: complementary medicine treatments, non-toxic, high quality health and skincare products, slow fashion, shoes, bedding. However, I don’t see my wardrobe expenditures as splurges because I refuse to wear fast fashion, and I have a small wardrobe, so cost per wear is very low, and the bedding purchase was one and done and not recurring. I have high standards, but I only have what I need, and the higher quality things have stood the test of time, so I am content. An area I feel we spend far too much on is eating out. My husband loves to try all the latest and greatest restaurants, and we are very spoiled here in the Bay Area of CA, where we might have the highest concentration of farm:table locavore options. Even Chez Panisse is up the road from us! I would really prefer to eat out less for many reasons.
peachpathfinder you echoed my thoughts on buying local, grass-fed beef, organic chicken (marked down), organic oatmeal for daily breakfast, making our gluten-free bread, real fruits & veggies round out meals with an occasional fruit crisp for dessert. I cannot remember the last doctor appointment our 7 children needed. It’s an investment in our health.
Dear Jennifer, thanks you for this interesting video. I usuali try to save money doing all my homework without a help, I do not spend for huge electonics and I do not watch pay tv. But I indulge in very high quality perfume, tea and I spend a lot, I confess, in books. If not, I cannot nourish my soul. Grateful greetings from Italy😊
You look amazing for someone with flu! And yes, Bend Milk Bath! Thanks for the recommendation last year. I also included that in pamper kits I put together for Christmas presents
Whenever I need a home decor or clothing item, I try to look at the thrift store first. Then, if I still can't find the item I am looking for, I will look for it new. This saves so much money and I often get better quality items than I would buy otherwise. For example, the other day I found $50 Pottery Barn placemats for $6! As for splurges, I splurge on organic food for our family, experiences (like going to the symphony, etc), and getting my pixie cut maintained every 8 weeks. :) Great video, hope you are starting to feel better! :)
I enjoy your channel so much. We are also on the no tv bandwagon. It has helped so much with my children's behavior and it is so nice for everyone to be spending quality time together. We also canceled internet, because we only used it for Netflix and Hulu. (And because it was so expensive in our area.) Now that we don't have those 3 things, we are saving almost $120 a month, and we don't even miss it.
I do like Audible as well. We purchase high quality chicken and beef from a farmer, but they are more economical and better quality than from a store or co-op. We also invest in quality food but again at stores with more reasonable prices. Clothing I purchase mostly on clearance but higher quality. My mom sews skits for me too. Books I love and purchase mostly second hand. We do invest in high quality natural remedies, skincare, and personal care items, including cleaning products.
Jennifer, love your channel! I enjoy following you and Kim, so very fun to see your collaboration! Thanks for keeping it classy...very refreshing in our not-so-classy world 😉.
I try to buy quality clothes for wearing out of the home, I work on our homestead everyday and my work clothes get very dirty so I keep those things separate. I use thrift stores and recycle as much as I can. I don’t spend extra money on beauty treatments EVER. We always live within our budget and grow most of our fruit and vegetables. We have a crash fund for emergencies and savings accounts for bigger items etc. life feels in control when you know you have a plan and don’t have any debt.
What a beautiful channel. I appreciate the time that you spend creating it for us all to enjoy. I’m a mom of 6 (7-18yrs) and I do almost all the things you mention. My hubby and I do love to go out at least once a week. We love frozen yogurt shops and trying out different cultural restaurants - nothing too expensive. The more authentic, the cheaper the restaurants tend to be. I do incorporate quality thrift store items with newer articles as well. Our latest investment has been on electric toothbrushes for the whole family. 💕😁✨
Jennifer, I love your channel and books! Just bought Connoisseur Kids and read it as part of our homeschooling morning with my 4 kids. We had an extremely tight budget last 2 years, but finally can see progress, so it's good to hear how others budget as I don't want have no boundaries, but invest where it lasts. Excited to see your spring wardrobe! Blessings!
Love the discussion on this video and reading others’ comments. I save by doing my own nails and hair coloring; also, I don’t have cable nor do I dine out. I do splurge on skincare, some makeup products, quality shoes.
90% of my clothing is thrifted. You can get some nice stuff at those places if you go often and spend a good amount of time searching. I got a Vera Bradley messenger bag there for $7.99 about 5 years ago that I still use now. (My other prized thrift find was a king size Ralph Lauren duvet for $9.99.) I do spend more on groceries because we buy organic and grass fed where we can. We have started a garden this year so I'm hoping the grocery budget will shrink some. We currently have beets, chard, kale, spinach, radishes and peas planted. (All from seed. Heirloom seeds. I guess I splurged there also. Ha ha)
Loved this and also enjoyed both your ecourses Jennifer! I splurge on designer (preloved) bags and sunglasses / shoes maybe once or twice a year. I splurge on some organic foods and vitamins for the family and date night out with my husband maybe once every 2 months, Husband does most of our DIY. I cut my own hair and don't colour it, make my own beauty products, make most of our meals from scratch, host friends at our house instead of meeting in cafes and restaurants, don't travel much unless we get an unexpected windfall. We live below our means, always have done, as we are both self-employed and have to have a cushion to get us through the leaner times. Our only debt is our mortgage, we own our car and have no credit cards. At times I wish I could keep up with my friends and family and travel as much as they do, or renovate our house some more, but we can sleep at night knowing we have no debts and thus very little stress. Love that you preach this, as so many TH-camrs are all about buying multiple designer bags at full price! Keep it up!! Niamh in Dublin, Ireland
Ideally, I’d say splurge on mattresses, pillows, and shoes - get the best you can afford, because the alternative is pain. I agree with you about getting the best accessories you can, especially a purse and coat if like me you only have one. I try to save on clothes for myself and my kids by thrifting whenever possible, and I also thrift for books we need. We don’t spend money on theaters, eating out, manicures, or massages, though I would not call that ‘saving’, but rather, ‘not being extravagant’. We’ve invested in cheap and healthy ways to have fun, like roller blades, bicycles, gardening supplies, and fishing gear - it was a lot of money upfront but given us hundreds of hours of fun.
Same here, when people know how much our mattress cost they get shocked. But it transformed our sleep. It's 5 stars hotel quality bed. I was willing to cut down on my spendings...but this...essential basic comfort. Pillows, bedding. How much of our life we spend in bed after all? Agree that it's the same for shoes. Basic comfort on your feet.
I love to get my hair done. I started this a year ago for myself because before I didn’t do anything that was for me. I just got a facial last week which was the first in years. I am not a shopper so my husband tends to get me clothes when my start to look like rags. I feel inspired to have more pride in my wardrobe and might get something special I like.
I splurge on coffee and tea (rarely out but I buy super high quality and make it at home every morning and afternoon respectively). I save eating at home and also buying staples in bulk at Costco. I also splurge on books (we're a family of book obsessed people) and dance classes. While I save doing my own nails and cutting my own hair (and that of my family) I splurge/save on clothing because I've been following the 10 item wardrobe for 5 years now so the individual items are splurges but the overall total is way below what I used to spend. =)
I am on Dave Ramsey's baby step 3 so I have been in self denial mode for awhile now. However.....for my 60th birthday I did splurge on a new Brahmin handbag that I paid cash for. I do prefer quality clothes ie. Ann Taylor, not Gucci! I am so much better at mindful spending. I don't technically have a 10 item wardrobe but tend to wear the same core pieces that I love and feel good in. My journey to becoming completely debt free will be when I downsize and pay cash for a home as I approach retirement. I am always learning about new ways to save and better purchases to make and purchases not worth the money. The beauty of You Tube is that you can listen to many diverse opinions and see what others do to save money or to becoming debt free. You can pull what you think will work for you and leave on the table what may not.
I save by not eating out and cooking form home mostly from scratch. I also don’t buy a lot of disposable products but rather reusable instead. I don’t buy a lot of makeup but the few things I do buy I tend to buy higher quality. I have a capsule wardrobe and many items I enjoy for years, even over a decade! We do our own gardening and housecleaning. I save by a minimalist approach to my children’s wardrobes as well and then doing laundry every day to keep up with it. I do my own manicures and pedicures. I splurge on thigh quality items for my capsule wardrobe.
I usually dont like to do/buy girly stuff to relax or entertain myself. But I do think that we can save money by buying high quality stuff becouse you are not buying them as often. I'm a believer of a small wardrobe as well. I save a lot of money on food. Thank you so much for sharing! ❤🙏
Expensive purchases I think about how often do I buy it? Example; I spent a lot on a high quality beautiful Christmas tree. I've had the tree for 15 years and its still beautiful. I call them "one and done". In essence if I know I'm going to have it for years and years then I go for high quality. Classic clothing peices that never go out of style are worth the extra money for me. A black tailored blazer for example or a really high quality pair of slacks, little black cocktail dress. Skin care.......well I have found great drugstore products that are comparable to higher end products.......but you have to do your homework on ingredients! I can a lot of fresh vegetables, meat stocks, soups and sauces. I shop at Aldi or Lidl and really buy in bulk if it's on sale. It's only my husband and I. .......all the kids are grown with families of thier own. Our grocery shopping isn't a huge haul but as a example last week whole frozen turkeys were on sale for .50 cents a pound.......i bought 3😁 There are so many ways to save if you really sit down and look where your money is going . I think even with the knowledge that's been around forever. .......live for your needs not your wants......I still see a lot of people having to have the super new large house, fancy car, luxury items......its silly. We bought a historical home 3 years ago that needed work. 3,500 square feet in a historical town like Mayberry. We paid $158,000 because every room needed some sort of attention. Nothing structural but fixing plater, painting, sanding the hardwood floors. ......elbow grease. There are bargains to be scored everywhere. .......if your willing to put in the work. Thanks to the internet everything has step by step instructions. .... knowledge is power. Just after 3 years, our labor and materials cost $18,573.00 .....our house value went up 98,000.00......not bad for a little blood sweat and tears...lol...
We purchased an old farm house and remodeled it. People can hardly believe it is the same place. We did most of the work and our children helped and learned skills that they could use as adults. We took it one room at a time. I just finished my kitchen 3 years ago and did a walk in pantry last year. It is such an enjoyable old house and very comfortable. We could not touch it today as it would be more than we could pay. It came with acreage which makes it all the more enjoyable. I bet your house is beautiful.
What I am personally splurging on right now is my education... I learned that the most well spent money are the ones that allow me to be educated on a scholarship level and on various matters concerning our today and past's world. So this means tuition, books etc etc. What I love to splurge on is my skin care and body treatments both at home and at the parlor, apart from hair color (I do it at home). Plus everyday I put in a little box 1-2 euros so I am sure that at the end of the month I saved something.
I use audible, too. We occasionally splurge on travel- not first class or anything, but traveling with a family is expensive. The other place I splurge is my hobby of paper crafts.
I get my hair colored at a salon because I have a lot of gray hair and doing it myself never gave me good results. However, I seldom splurge on Starbucks coffee anymore since we got a Keurig. I got refillable, reusable pods, so I'm not contributing to the landfill and it's cheaper. And I don't buy a lot of clothes. I'm a quilter, but I recently started making my own clothes-- mostly casual summer dresses at the moment. I want to try thrift store refashioning when this pandemic is over. We also furnished our house entirely with high quality second-hand furniture instead of using credit to buy poorer quality things. I cut cable many years ago, though I do have an Amazon Prime membership. I check out ebooks and audio books from the public library as well. We almost never go out to eat. My husband and I are almost 60 and we are virtually debt free-- thanks to him really. He's a much better money manager than I am! Thank goodness!
I like to spend on good quality mostly organic food produce. I think it tastes better. I hate the thought of eating pesticide residues. Growing my own food is something I'd love to try. I also like spending on eco friendly products. I don't much on clothes. I like what I have for the most part. In general I'm pretty frugal. I enjoy spending on other people like sending people flowers, paying for a weekend away for my parents. It's quite interesting to see what different people prioritise!
Ev Coleman can not wait for warm weather so we can get the garden started; the money we save those months is remarkable. Start small with a potted tomato plant.
A great vlog, as usual! As to what I splurge on: wool for knitting and/or crocheting. High quality food i.e. Fish from the Fish-Shop, almond and oatmilk. Pedikürest, though mainly because I am squeamish and ticklish. 😂 I save on expensive hairstylists, meat, manicures, Most conveniance food.(not sure that was spelled correctly, I beg pardon). Like you I love audiobooks, but I have a lot by now, that I often go back to and I find a lot on you tube. Also I discovered podcasts for me. I am working on Büdingen less books, spending less on coffee and some homedecor I like, but don‘t really need. As you say, it is always a personal choice in what we invest. Myself, I have a couple of goals, that I wish to reach, so I combed through my expenses to find among my Wants, what I want to keep, the rest I let go. This I repeat. Sometimes I exchange, sometimes I let go. This way I have what I need and want, but am still on my way to reaching my goals. Thank you for your inspiring vlogs!!👍
I splurge on haircut and color every 8 weeks, my favorite French perfume, and luxurious undergarments. I cook at home, have coffee at home, and accept all hand-me-downs when it comes to clothing or go to a resale shop.
Im coming to this video a few years later. Great content! I get a pedicure every eight weeks because I have ingrown toenails and it helps with the pain. I only do color on my toes in warmer weather. I don’t do manicures at salons but at home. I don’t use polish except for a specific occasion as I’m an artist and I get paint on myself. I get my hair cut and colored every two months. That’s probably a big splurge! I am starting to invest more in quality skin care. I’m fortunate that I have nice lashes so I would not spend on that. My clothes are good. Not really buying much. Definitely trying to eat at home.
Thank you for talking about something that most people avoid! I suppose it feels like another world where not getting a manicure is considered saving. According to this list, I guess we save in every area! But that’s just our necessary normal. We do spend money on organic food whenever possible, but that is still on a modest food budget.
Hi. We have begun the process of splurgong on experiences. We try to take a family vacation twice a year & weekend getaway on short school breaks. We don't buy deodorants but now make our own. My kids have always been minimalists & are happy with their existing clothes which may be just a maximum of 5 items. We try to repair items that are broken where possible. We don't tend to change or upgrade our car just cos others are doing so, as long as the car is in working order it's fine for us. We have stopped going for sales & exhibitions. I try to use natural oils for my skin & natural products as far as possible. I don't go for beauty treatments more than once a year of at all
Hi Jennifer, you definitely need to download the Libby app! I was shocked I spent money on audible after seeing everything available for free on there with unlimited downloads. If there’s a book I want to listen to that’s not on there I use the libro.fm app (same price as audible) but it supports independent bookstores (you can even pick a bookstore you want to support) along with the authors of course. Rather than supporting Amazon.. we are debt free but money is very tight at the moment so I haven’t splurged in quite some time. I’m hoping to update my wardrobe with a few pieces. I’ve worn the same single pair of shoes since September and I can’t wait until sandal season so I can stop wearing them! The makeup item I will always splurge on is bare minerals mineral veil. 💕
Yes, and if you live in a small library system, you can often get a library card from neighboring library systems that have a reciprocal lending agreement. Add your library cards to the Libby app and enjoy the expanded selection of audiobooks and ebooks.
Courtney I’m going to have to check out this app! After forever I checked out a library book and had to return it before I finished it! :( could you tell me if why we sleep by Matthew walker is available on the app?
Things i splurge on - 1. books - they are a great pleasure to me (when i need to save money I use the library though). 2. Lotions, deodorant, toothpaste, and shampoos - I am a cancer survivor and it is important to put quality items on my skin. 3. Tea time magazine and Victoria Magazine (although when they expire , I am only going to re sub to one - not sure which one yet ) 4. Candles - clean burning , natural candles are important to me and those are normally more pricey. 5. Experiences - my husband and i don't go out much but once every couple of months we like to go on an adventure and we will spend money on those experiences. 6.I splurge on groceries - we eat all our meals at home except for going out to lunch once or twice a month on the weekend. So, I get good quality groceries and it still costs less than going out . Things I save money on 1. Haircuts - I have super short hair and the style is easy to maintain - i get a $20 hair cut every 6-7 weeks. I also do not color my hair. I am in my early 50s and it is starting to go grey but it is coming in nicely...like highlights lol. 2. Makeup - I don't wear any makeup except lipstick ( I do splurge on a good lipstick though but it lasts me a long time.) 3. Clothing - I work from home so I don't need expensive clothing . I make it a point to get nice things but i don't go crazy on costs. I have a few really pretty comfortable dresses that i wear when i work that were under $50. Also, i don't spend money on expensive shoes for the same reason. 4. Beauty treatments - manicures, facials, etc.... I do those at home. I could go on and on but these items came to mind first. Oh , and TV - I do splurge on Amazon prime, Acorn TV, and Netflix. My husband and I watch one show every night after dinner (before we retire to bed to read for the evening) and there is nothing good on regular television so that is where we get all our period dramas and British mystery shows. :)
Hi Jennifer, I hope you are feeling better from the flu. I also don't color my hair. I actually bought a book on how to cut your own hair and I do that too. I have long hair so it is pretty easy. My hair style is similar to yours except I have side swept bangs (and I trim them myself). I purchased a Mason Pearson hairbrush and some other expensive hair tools (hot rollers, hair dryer). I do my own manicure and pedicure at home. I tend to splurge on high end make up. I love Bobbi Brown and Clinique make up and really enjoy wearing it. I love Yorkshire Gold tea which is more expensive than American brands, but it is just so good! Other than that I am pretty low maintenance. Take care and feel better! xo, Karen
im 32. and have been able to save 20k with a part time job. my job doesn't pay much but ive been able to save this much by not eating out. going out to movies. or Starbucks. wearing things over and over. I love thrifting and yard sales. But I do like to splurge on food and skincare. very minimal skincare. I use Carina organics and also some of Paulas choice. my home is very small here in Southern California so I dont have a big space to fill. I don't have a car payment or anyone to impress lol. It can be done. although I wasn't always like this, I wish I could have been this way sooner. haha. thanks for the vids!
As a former server I'll never dine out on a major holiday (especially Valentines or Mother's Day!). For our Valentine's dinner my husband made grass finished steaks (a splurge since I only eat it once or twice a year) and I made two delicious side dishes and homemade herbed butter. This would have cost us over $100 at a restaurant! We made it for less than half. Most of our meals are a lot less luxurious though, haha. I also enjoy growing a lot of our own food - I hope to never have to buy another tomato or zucchini from the store again! However, I believe it's important to splurge a bit on ethically produced meat and locally grown food.
My splurges - Healthy real food, healthy beauty supplies, healthy cleaning supplies and, most important, experiences with all the kiddos in my life--- grand kids, nieces and nephews.
I hope you feel better soon!
Feel better soon ❤
Feel better soon! I gave up hair color and regular manicures and pedicures.
Viruses 🦠 like to hang out in the ears, nose and throat, so try using colloidal silver in your ears- flood each ear for 5 minutes, and spray your throat and up your nose. We do this for all patients that come through our clinic, and it really helps a lot. Get well soon.
Feel better soon!
Thank you Stephanie for putting that so well... your comment made me open eyes to my “wants” versus my “needs” 💐
@@sillybeeful ❤❤
Thanks for sharing this 🙌
My "bed spread" moment included the matching shower curtain. I realized how ridiculous this was. 😀😁🤣
I splurge on...
• an excellent haircut
• quality shoes
• key wardrobe pieces.
The Simple Swan Totally!
I have spent more money than I care to admit on yarn but I create handmade items to give and sell. It’s truly the best therapy to spend time making something beautiful with my hands, it’s calming to my mind and soul.
I totally understand because I'm a quilter and it can get really expensive with all the new gadgets they come out with. And fabric!!
I went through the same thing. Worked three jobs to keep afloat. Now I see people are going to go through this again.
*YESSS!!! The QUEEN of chic has spoken! Love this so much! Thank you for this collaboration Jennifer; getting our money right couldn’t be any chic-er!!!* 😉❤️❤️❤️
This collaboration was so much fun! I loved your video, just left a comment. And that cardigan 👌 Love you! xx
Thrifting for furniture and painting it to make the items match! I look for items with real wood, that I can sand, paint, replace the hardware, etc.
DeAnna B this is beautiful ❤️
I love videos like this, Jennifer! 😊 I find that most of what you said lines up with what I do - either we are very similar, or you have greatly influenced me over the last five or six years! 😘 My husband and I began having weekly date nights almost a month ago, and we have eaten dinner at home every time! Once, we went out for dessert, but last time, we simply made coffee and sipped it while walking around a home-improvement store. 😂👍
I love this!
My in laws do the same for our children . I appreciate it so much
You KNOW I love this video! ;) We choose to spend money on our home/property since its where we spend most of our time.
I am getting tired of mine too, Amanda! Bring on spring! :)
the Daily Connoisseur Yes! Yesterday it was 51 and sunny and it got me so excited for warmer weather!:)
I used Lancôme for years, then decided when I retired last year to try drugstore skincare to save money and my skin suffered
So I’m back to Lancôme.
This was a fantastic collaboration, I love you both🌹
Yes! Exactly. Follow the passion and that is the place to responsibly spend. Love your beautiful dresses that you share on your channel, Nikki xx
Inspired by Nikki I love this so much ❤️❤️❤️
Sorry to hear your all sick!
@@cara_eachordinarymoment Husbands...lol
Lovely video. I am a minimalist. I truly enjoy doing many things myself. I guess you could call me
"the homestead connoisseur."
This year I'm going to start canning what we grow in the garden, and I'm starting slow.
We cook from scratch don't have tv,rarely eat out and just really try to enjoy what we are abundantly blessed with.
I totally agree with you.
Hi Jennifer, could you do a video on how to garden/grow vegetables?
As always, I really enjoyed your videos.
Thank you
Great video, you are truly a voice of reason in the chaos. X
This sounds so luxurious! I'm intrigued
I appreciate the example you set for women to spend wisely and to practice self control. Thank you for your videos!
Just wanted to say Hello, I came over from Kim's channel. And I'm so going to be catching up on watching your videos!
Blessings!
Thank you, Adela!
I love this content! It’s unique, relevant, and so inspiring! Thank you!
Came from Kim’s Free to Family channel - loved this vid! Thanks for sharing!
I told Kim hi from you. I enjoyed her video. She said a lot of nice things about you 😊
Love the discussion on this video and reading others’ comments.
Massages can be therapeutic though, so I can't judge others for spending money on them.
While I save doing my own nails and cutting my own hair (and that of my family)
I splurge/save on clothing because I've been following the 10 item wardrobe for 5 years now so the individual items are splurges but the overall total is way below what I used to spend. =)
Kathleen Hemingway OMG!! I splurge on coffee too🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
I am on Dave Ramsey's baby step 3 so I have been in self denial mode for awhile now.
Jaime Zuniga love cooking at home!!!!
I usually dont like to do/buy girly stuff to relax or entertain myself. But I do think that we can save money by buying high quality stuff becouse you are not buying them as often. I'm a believer of a small wardrobe as well. I save a lot of money on food.
Thank you so much for sharing!
❤🙏
I invested in a new wool - cashmere blend coat this year. My previous coat had lasted 10 years!!
Just wanted to say hi 👋. I'm here from Kim's channel. Love your content.
Our grocery shopping isn't a huge haul but as a example last week whole frozen turkeys were on sale for .50 cents a pound.......i bought 3😁
There are so many ways to save if you really sit down and look where your money is going .
Your house sounds like a dream! I love old houses!
@@TheDailyConnoisseur thank you very much ❤ Our home was on last year's historical home tour to benefit Meals on Wheels.
Fantastic video! This is also how we live our life.
Nice video. Love your jewelry!! Feel better soon. 💐💖
If I can find it at a consignment store, I buy it at the consignment store. Clothing, housewares, decor, jewellery.
@@juliecarns I should do that. I'd love to make a 'bee friendly' garden.
Hi Jennifer,
I’m a new subscriber and totally inspired by all of your videos. This was is a fave along with many others
A great vlog, as usual!
As to what I splurge on: wool for knitting and/or crocheting. High quality food i.e. Fish from the Fish-Shop, almond and oatmilk. Pedikürest, though mainly because I am squeamish and ticklish. 😂
I save on expensive hairstylists, meat, manicures, Most conveniance food.(not sure that was spelled correctly, I beg pardon).
I love this video. I’m going to search for your ten item wardrobe videos now.
Victoria is the most beautiful magazine.
:( could you tell me if why we sleep by Matthew walker is available on the app?
s21972012145525 yes, I see it as an audiobook. Different libraries have different inventory though so yours may also have the ebook.
Courtney so what exactly is this app and how is it different if our library offers ebooks? Is this connected to the library?
s21972012145525 yes it’s connected to your library.
Things i splurge on -
1. books - they are a great pleasure to me (when i need to save money I use the library though).
2. Lotions, deodorant, toothpaste, and shampoos - I am a cancer survivor and it is important to put quality items on my skin.
3. Tea time magazine and Victoria Magazine (although when they expire , I am only going to re sub to one - not sure which one yet )
Things I save money on
1. Haircuts - I have super short hair and the style is easy to maintain - i get a $20 hair cut every 6-7 weeks. I also do not color my hair. I am in my early 50s and it is starting to go grey but it is coming in nicely...like highlights lol.
2. Makeup - I don't wear any makeup except lipstick ( I do splurge on a good lipstick though but it lasts me a long time.)
I found this very inspiring! Great video!
Truth: we do love in a material world :) ps That print on you is so cheerful ❤️
New to the channel and love this real life content!!!
This is so fabulous and helpful. Thanks.😀
My splurges - Healthy real food, healthy beauty supplies, healthy cleaning supplies and, most important, experiences with all the kiddos in my life--- grand kids, nieces and nephews.
