Ride: KTM ETS BUSINESS CLASS to Butterworth, Penang

  • We tried the new KTM ETS Business Class train to Butterworth, Penang recently. Starting the journey from KL Sentral, we were directed to the Business Class lounge which needs refurbishment to say the least. We do appreciate being able to board the train before everyone else directly from the Business Class lounge via an escalator.
    After stopping briefly at the old Kuala Lumpur Station, we were provided a simple breakfast with juice. Around 11.15am, they served us a simple chicken rice lunch approximately a little over an hour prior to arriving at Butterworth Station.
    The wifi throughout the journey was very unstable and unusable. Data for both Maxis and Digi were not great too but better especially traveling through big towns and cities. One thing we do appreciate is their in-train entertainment but I do hope they add more movies as the selection is small.
    Overall the Business Class (RM86 adult / RM47 child) coach is very worth the upgrade from the Platinum Standard Seats (RM79 adult / RM44 child). In fact I feel it's a no brainer considering all the perks, food and superb service being rendered on the coach itself throughout the journey.
    If you are looking for a more affordable train ride, then check out the Gold Standard seats (RM59 adult / RM34 child) instead but do note there is only 1 train at 5.30PM each day at the time of this video being published.

    KL Sentral Butterworth is 343km and fare is RM85 with travelling time of 4hrs 15mins. KL Sentral to JB Sentral is 327km...hope the fare to be around the same and the journey to be 4hrs. Economic sense.... to travel 343km in 4hrs for 2 person will cost RM170, compared to driving the petrol & toll might be only around RM100. Cheaper than flight, more expensive if you have more than 2 pax, but ultimately more comfort, safe and fast. Malaysia sure can move forward with ETS services.

      Hi there Hatta, good news is that all ETS Business Class seats are rotatable which allows for the layout of the seats to be flexible. The seats are also able to recline up to 45 degrees in case you are wondering :) Safe travels my friend!

    Apart from the meals and interior design, I believe the crew should be as friendly as possible too, imho. I know they probably are tired but it improves their service. Service & body language. Eventhough it's one menu, just a "today we have nasi ayam, enjoy" and *smile* is okay. Idk just my two cents.

    • @WanderEats
      @WanderEats  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree and this goes to all types of scenarios as well where service comes to play. They really have to power to brighten up someone's day immensely.

  • @sam39410ify
    @sam39410ify 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The entertainment unit and meals are a few frills that I can do without to be honest, not even JR do it in their Shinkansen/Limited Express trains. What I wish is better interior design for the business class, perhaps something traditional themed rather then the generic modern design. Maybe KTM can even renamed the business class as bunga raya coach with stylized hibiscus symbol. The food, if better packaged, can be sold as our version of ekiben.
    Now that said, I do hope KTM can replace the economy seats with rotating seats when they refurbish the ETS sets in the future. Having to scramble for front/rear facing seats when booking the ticket is annoying.

    • @WanderEats
      @WanderEats  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great observations there Sam and agreed with you on the meals portion. We do appreciate the priority boarding though and the entertainment unit kept our kids busy the entire trip which was awesome.

      @@simonlam8362 Impossible to do that on metre-gauge, all HSR runs on standard gauge which demanded for entirely new line in Malaysia. Also there will be a lot of tunneling, elevated railways and low gradient slope in order for high speed train to retain speed, that will cost a bomb to national treasury not to mention it hasn't recover from Covid-19. In fact, ETS already declared as one of the fastest metre gauge train service in the world so unless Malaysia build a new railway line, ETS shall only stayed at 160 km/h.

    • @WanderEats
      @WanderEats  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Catherine, sadly I can't recall the seat # after so long.. lol! I do recall picking the middle so we can have all 4 seats together as people tend to either pick the front or the back for easy access. If you are alone or just the 2 of you, then perhaps the front seat or back seat would be a good choice for access. Depending on the cabin car, one side will be closer to the restroom as well.

    Hope the Federal & Penang State Govt will consider building train (or MRT) link between Penang International Airport and Butterworth ETS Station. I would say the Transport Ministry is not so wise, with 2 bridges only for cars and no “Mass Rapid Transit”, it is no choice and still get stuck at traffic congestion. If the 3rd link is a tunnel without a railway, it would be 3rd time fooling of peoples on the Penang Island.
