- The long repression of pro-Palestinian voices in Germany reached a peak last Friday.
German police shut down the Palestine Congress, a vital event to unite activists around a ceasefire for Gaza. They detained participants, including Jewish activists; they deported a Palestinian speaker. And then they banned our own Yanis Varoufakis, not only from making political speeches in Germany, but also from doing so over Zoom (!).
These authoritarian moves make it clear: Germany is intent on silencing anyone who speaks out against its complicity in Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.
So for our livestream this week, Yanis Varoufakis and colleagues who attended the Palestine Congress will be dissecting this brazen act of state repression against Palestinian solidarity. What lessons can we draw? How has the reaction been? And what could all this mean for the future of free speech and pro-Palestine activism in Germany, and around the world?

If they know they cannot get away with it, they will be much more reserved in their actions. Conversely, Germany is one of the top recipients of Israel surveillance tech and police training (marketed as "tested and proven in battle"--see Palestine Laboratory by Anthony Lowenstein, pub. by Verso). Both sides are making huge amounts of money. In fact, 99% of Israeli weapon imports are from US and Germany. And jobs in military tech all over the US sphere of influence have skyrocketed...

I am not sure that calling themselves “comrades” is a good idea. The communist connotation is not the best. It will not help the cause I think.
Depends what country you are from. "Comrade" might have this connitation in English, in German it means "mate" or "pal" and so on. I don't know of course how Greeks use the word.
Also in Italy, being "compagni" goes beyond the negative connotation that was attached by English cultures and politics to the term. At school you call your mates "compagni", which is way more human and collectivizing than "colleagues". Then maybe, the communist era spread this connotation. But I'm against my vocabulary being held hostage by outdated ideologies from the east or the west.

I have had such a bad day, watching and working with totally disconnected people, who do not want to see, know, or engage at any level with the behaviour of their own country!!! Yes, I am talking about Germany! It is deeply distressing, depressing and leads me time and again to search for a way to wake people up in a gentle and respectful way. I do not think this is possible at this point. Then I clicked into my big hope.....DIEM25!!!! Thank you so much for this program!!! You are all inspiring! I totally agree with Karin De Rigo!! I feel shocked that this is all happening in Germany, despite the many indicators and the tendencies. I am very angry. It IS the German government. @@scarba At the best mixed feelings. He does have a good grasp of economics, and some of his propositions could lead somewhere. He is absolutely right about the true nature of EU right now. BUT the man is so full of himself and every opportunity for public speech is basically a stage for his huge Ego.
A good parallel (without any political relation) about Yanis' actual influence in Greece would be Alexi Navalny. Everybody outside Russia thought that he was the main antagonist of Putin having huge political influence. The reality is that the guy was like 2% at his best and people didnt really bother with him.
Yanis unlike other Greek politicians maintains an online presence and tries with this platform to have a ''pan European'' presence that amplifies his image. In Greece his actual influence is actually very very small.

But he also had a long career as a university professor of economics. He can be annoying but that doesn’t mean that he is always wrong. I would say that he is often more right than wrong. You need to challenge the Government in German court for this unconstitutional behaviour towards yourself and Prof Abu Sitta. Does anybody do this? Am pretty certain the judiciary will not look at this official behaviour kindly. It is called Verfassungsbeschwerde. I think it needs to be raised by a German citizen.
