  • On Friday, January 27, 2023, DiEM25 co-founder and MERA25 leader Yanis Varoufakis gave a speech at the Havana Congress on the New International Economic Order, about the need for a new Non-Aligned Movement to "end the legalised robbery of people and Earth fuelling climate catastrophe."
The co-founder of DiEM25 was in Cuba on an official visit upon an invitation from the Havana government and a key topic of discussion on his trip was the creation of a New Non-Aligned Movement that will aim for a New International Economic Order.

@@ThewonderingmindsYou again? Say something. Or say nothing, cynic. PLEASE!
If you’ve got a specific claim to make, by all means please share it. Many of us would no doubt like to read it, since we’re here in an earnest pursuit of information and insight to remedy today’s clearly disintegrating western capitalist democracies.
Otherwise we should reflect on the fact that cynicism … a very common point of view quite encouraged by our ruling class in the west’s capitalist democracies today … cannot abide hearing anyone express earnest beliefs with conviction, and a firm declaration for a cause, without defaulting to belittling anyone who speaks in this way. But by doing so the cynic merely reveals a shadowy reflection of their own cynicism and lack of belief and hopelessness in everyone else. It’s not good enough. Specific claims, facts, arguments. Or say nothing, Kynikos.
By trusting no one the cynic can be no one’s friend and no one can abide them. The powerful will tolerate and encourage them though, since their transactional nature and tendency to viciousness (Kynikos … dog-like) is useful in the maintenance of existing power.
We need less cynics and cynicism. Not more. It’s a misanthropic philosophy too common historically when one small minority has grabbed too much power and wealth in a society.

The Greek vote of "No More!" in 2015 was an astounding democratic moment (against all "advice" from media), and Varoufakis at least walked out rather than betray the people. If Greece had held on, they would have won (as Schaubel told YV privately later), and Greece would be 1000% better off already. All power to the international workers' movement with Diem25.

      "international workers"
as if the working class people from Italy give a shit about workers in Pakistan or Brazil. or Greek working class gives a shit about Turkish working class.
this is the nonsense about socialism and why fascism/nazism from an economic standpoint makes more sense to implement in a country.
a pro-workers government in a country should ONLY care about the workers of its country. nothing else.
economics isn't the only thing that matters anyways. local culture and traditions are also important in a county's society. it is part of a country's identity and heritage.

@@LevisH21 Too bad you're so poorly informed about international worker cooperations. Must be why you're wallowing in fascist fantasies and believe workers have no common interests across borders: I doubt your fantasy features you near/at the bottom of slaves and cannon fodder. Well, if business can make German union workers "compete" with Chinese wage-slaves in a race to the bottom, the opposite force of global cooperation can/must act too. Welcome to Diem25.

@@37Dionysos good luck your socialist fantasies as well.
it also is so hilarious that supposed socialist countries of the world like China and Vietnam have willingly abandoned socialism in order to become essentially state capitalist countries.
and you should also explain why Cuba which is another socialist country trades goods/services with capitalist countries.
this should have been a blasphemy for a serious socialist to even consider doing business with capitalist countries.
      it's complete hypocrisy.
just like how a conservative politician might say he is against gay marriage or gay rights but is hilariously cought himself having sex with a gay prostitute in some hotel room in Budapest or Prague.

Cuba. Where surgeons literally moonlight as taxi drivers because they make more money as taxi drivers than performing surgery. Cuba. Where experienced physicians make $80 per month. Cuba. Where physicians who practice abroad have to send their foreign earnings BACK to the Cuban government - even when not in their home country, they can't retain the wealth they earn. There’s a Cuban saying: “We live like poor people, but we die like rich people.” Well, in a country where you don't have political freedom or cars (per capita car ownership per 1000 people in Cuba: 67; per capita car ownership per 1000 people in USA: 908), of course you're going to be more proud of how you get to DIE than how you get to live.
"Using the ratios found for other countries, corrections were proposed to the statistics [infant mortality] published by the Cuban government: instead of 5.79 per 1000 births, the rate stands between 7.45 and 11.16 per 1000 births."

I loved Yanis's comment about new international economic movements that should not include theocratic regimes. It should not tolerate any abuse of human rights by governments that just because of their anti-imperialist frontage for any other reasons contrary to non-aligned movements such as having a backwards religious ideology (Iran) or for competition (Russia). As I understood, The ultimate movement's goal stands for fair economic interactions that benefit the masses and eventually end human suffering where it is a lifetime struggle for the majority of society to provide the basic necessities and seek security, a peaceful place to live and be free from warmongers and exploitations of the large cooperations.

I'd like to hear Yanis' ideas on why current account deficit countries in the global north are able to avoid needing IMF/Wall Street credit (debt). Is it that they have a critical amount of capital domestically to produce enough income to maintain their standard of living while continuing their deficit status? If so, then it's obvious that the issue of who can live well vs. who suffers is determined by history: the West and Japan became capitalist first, and the rest of the world were their colonies. The pain experienced by the current account status of a nation is therefore a historical issue of colonialism and imperialism, not an economic issue.

There was never truly a secular liberal democracy, at least in the modern times. Britain was practicing secular liberal democracy inside Britain, while at the same time having colonies all over the planet. Liberal democracy is a myth.

Yanis has a finger on the pulse of the systemic problems besetting the world, but I have great trepidation about his proposed solutions and their consequences in the long term.
I want to hear how he sees his path forward navigating the ugliness brought on by tendencies of human biology, social hierarchy, and privatization as a consequence of genetics and lineage building.
What are the safeguards he would pursue against patrimonialism and totalitarian takeover of these institutions and technologies once they are implemented?
How does he see this revolution successfully combatting the selfishness of genes and consequent human behavior?
Digital cloud capital is a cure that may prove more dangerous than the disease it treats. It can't be ignored, it exists and it can no longer bet put back in its box; Yanis is right that if we don't utilize it, it will utilize us.

I want to speak today about the fact that the international world order was based on Harrassment with weapons, hunger and thirst while the solutions are based on cooperation, and the inexpensive introduction of hydroelectric power to develop income generating private property. Widespread private property capable of generating and accumulating clean energy with water shall become a blessing for everyone that adopts this new “reset” that shall be based on dealing with each other in a more respectful and humane way.

It seems every power mongering would be hero considers themselves the one who is going to "save mankind" "from itself". In this case, he cites dual extinction events his great movement will avert - global warming extinction and global thermonuclear war. It's just so tiring. I am severely disappointed.

Yanis is incomparable as always - a mix of competency in modern economics, visions for advancing the cause of saving all of us from capitalist dystopia through technology, and the good old revolutionary spirit of those who won so many gains from the ruling classes over the past century and a half.
