Used to catch lots of big red emperor 10km north of rainbow beach on 40 to 60m gravel reefs. Always found them with big pearl perch and huge hammer head sharks. We always bought them up slow to avoid barotrauma and the sharks left us alone because they weren't struggling like a quick rod retrieve. We used 60 pound hand lines, 6/0 heavy hooks and mono only, never braid because its an environmental nightmare. As a scuba diver i hate braid, it is a reef killer that wraps bright colored tangles around every living thing & seems to last forever. Mono doesn't seem to tangle on crabs, turtles and coral as much as braid does. We used fish flesh baits, they preferred white flesh but would take a big chunk of trevella. They were really tough on the hands & had to watch you didn't get a finger or tow caught in the line or they would nearly rip it off.
Thank You Steven for the extra information.👍
Another excellent educational video thanks Shannon. I'd like to request a new video or two, first all about anchoring offshore, max depth, species, weather, anchor types etc. Also fishing on the drift techniques and when to do it. I'm on the Sunshine Coast by the way and new to offshore fishing. Boats are using Minn Kota now and I use one in the estuary but the offshore boat I will be on is 8 meters in size.
Thanks mate for the kind words and I will happily do a couple of videos on anchoring and drifting I just have another 2 requested videos to do first.
Thanks 🤙@@Aussie-Fishing
Nice video mate, hit us up on the next good weatherwindow and we will take you out and you can show us how its done,
Thanks Shannon for your advice .Much Appreciated!!
You are so welcome!👍
This helps alot of people like myself that struggle to find them
Thank you mate and I hope some of this info helps you to find that big Red you have been chasing.
Nice video mate! Keep em coming
Thanks, will do!👍
Great quality information, thanks 👍🏽
My pleasure!👍
Hey young fella I’m a west Australian who have caught a red or two.
My favourite hook is the gamakasto octopus circle hook. ( it’s spelled wrong but you’ll know)
I’d be happy to share some experiences but not sure how to do it.
Hi buddy I would love to hear about your experiences. You can write me here shannonsfishing1@gmail.com or even send some short videos or photos. I will be happy to share them on my channel.
Thanks Shannon.
Great content mate👍
Thanks mate.
hello master. Glad to see this video. GC Bob
Hey, thanks
What anchor do you use. I’m running a plough mate and not so good in rubble.
Really like your info.
I always run a sand anchor, set up on a trip system so I always get it back with 5 mtrs of chain. This method will hold pretty much anywhere. Good luck mate.
Lovely Ep and Advise, I was a Pro line fisherman as well on and off for 30 od years but did around 17 years strait. We fished from Double Island point to the swains, Id say 80% of our Reds we caught on Alvey Reef Queen deck winches were a lot easier on my back. We found fresh Mullet and fresh Tuna, fresh fish, many things were top bait for them.
Nice to meet you Graig and thanks for the extra info buddy.👍
Hey mate, great info in this clip. Will you be doing a video for nannygai anytime soon?
Now that my boat is ready to go I will be chasing them over the cooler months and letting you guys know all the info on how I catch them. I hope this will help mate.
@@Aussie-Fishingthanks mate, look forward to the video
Good excellent 👍 ok
Thanks Shannon for the tips on the Reds! How far south can you get them?
You are welcome mate and you can catch Reds from Noosa up to the Cape.
Can you get nannygai with this same . Thanks
Yes mate I fish for Nannys the same way I just use Squid and Pilchards for bait.
@ShannonsFishing OK thanks mate.
@ShannonsFishing I'm at Yeppoon. Any chance you can do a talk on catching nannygai. Like best time of year in 20m + water . Thanks
@@nickjay7362 Hi Nick I use to pro fish out of Yeppoon for Reds and Nanny's and we found that the cooler months were always better for the Nanny's and Reds fishing in 40 to 60 mtrs straight out off Stanage Bay. If you fish the same way as in my Red Emperor video with Pilchards and Squid you will do well fishing north of Yeppoon. Good Luck Buddy.
@@Aussie-Fishing thanks heaps mate
How would that work of the Goldie
Not sure how the Cuttlefish would work. I have used the downriver trick in high current off the Goldie to catch Snapper, Jew and Cobia. Using the paternoster rig bouncing back to a school of fish does work for Pearl Perch and proberly good for other species as well. Good Luck mate.
