There was one in South Carolina when it came out. A dude was a Toyota and Mercedes dealer. I worked at the Toyota dealership. I used to drool over that thing everyday. I've lived in 3 different states since then and the only R series I see now are ratty R350s driven by people who wished that they made different automobile choices in their life. The funny thing is that I've seen just as many Bugattis as I have seen R63s...just one.

Yes this guy or gal is a true enthusiast, some one was finally did what I’ve always said needed to be done to the R63 AMG/ML63 which is a big brake kit conversion.
Great video. I am geeking out over this car since it's just such a weird beast. I love that it has 500 mph in a family hauler but it's like for a family that likes to go really fast! The brilliant part I think about this car is how under the radar it is. Without the extra exhaust, or the big brakes, nobody knows that you can beat tons of even modern cars in a car meant to pick up your kids at soccer practice. That anonymity combined with the rarity, combined with the fact that no other car manufacturer has made a more powerful minivan, and the fact that it's rarer than a Chiron, makes this my ultimate dream car.
Hey, just realized this was newly uploaded. Another R63 owner here, 251077 so mine is SWB in Japan and thus 1 of 84 in the world then! Stunningly clean and beautiful car yours is. Mine is Alabaster white, so gives some different touch when you look at it. And yes, I must admit I prefer the LWB version for inside space and the look of it. Just looks funny to look at from sides at times. Still love my car though!

Hi, R63 owner here. This car is amazing to drive and the reactions you get are hilarious however, It's also one of the worst cars I've ever owned :( It's certainly fun to drive but the reliability is horible. Been through nearly 3 engines since purchasing the car in January and I have only had the car in my possession for 2 months. The rest of the time it was disessembled at out local dealer. Still incredibely fun. My car 10:07
thats really sad to hear. In Germany there are many people running over 300.000km without any big problems. The oil mercedes uses will cause alot of problems. There are some other oils recommended for this engine and will increase the durability of the engine by 2 or 3 times.
just happened to see one in my small town that no one has ever heard of in PA and didn't think much of it. Looked it up because I wasn't quite sure what it was and then I saw the production numbers and I now regret not taking a picture.
Originally supposed to be a R55 slated for 2006, but ended up as a R63 for 2007. Had the R63 been more successful, there would been a Type-S MDX by now.
Whats the difference between euro/US airboxes? I once noticed there was different filter inside US-spec E63 AMG. And can you say why US-spec cars always has little less horsepower than euro models?
The difference with the US airboxes is that they have a more restrictive profile inside. The US spec of pretty much every AMG appears to be rated slightly lower because the US standard is mechanical HP measure and the Euro standard is metric HP or PS. So, a 2010 E63 for example has 525 PS or 517 HP which is the same power.
Might not be as quick but my fabulous 2007 R320CDI (bought new) has just averaged 37 mpg on a 150 mile trip. Not bad for a massive 6 seater. And even the oil burner feels quick. Plus super smooth. A superb car.
Mi father have this model of the clases R... In spain (the car was created in E.E.U.U) this car is very, very confortable but i tink this car need more power why the engine need move 2.375KG (i tink if this car 320cdi 4matic need minium than 270-300CV/HP)...
Excellent video once again. Very nice and unique vehicle the owner has but Mercedes did not make doing the maintenance on it easy. That must have been quite the bill to do what he did.
would a R63 be worth the buy over an R500 for a long distance high car for 2 guys constantly driving cross country for work?(so maintenance cost + reliability are very important.)
@@NoahWebster01 Excellent, I look forwards to hearing all about it, I have a 20 year old, quarter million mile W210 E55 estate but it still felt rock solid the one time I ran it up to the 155mph limiter, a minivan at much higher speeds could either be terrifying or just not make much fuss and I can't wait to see your impressions of the attempt.
My mom had this when I was in high school. I remember her getting a good deal on this over the GL she was looking at. I took this beast of a minivan out more than the RX-8 I had at the time, even when going on canyon runs with friends! Reliability was subpar of course, sunroof was constantly broken, the window switches wouldn’t work half the time, engine randomly dies on the freeway due to sensor, etc. One thing my family hates about MB is the reliability.. even our new 2020 SLC300 has interior panels coming off the glue (entire door trim!), trunk opening on freeway, etc. Same issues on the CLA we had too. Never had this many problems on my Porsche!!!
Epic. In an Australian car magazine I remember the the R class being described as ‘a dancing elephant’. Meaning that they’re interesting but ultimately pointless vehicles. SUV weight with no ground clearance. Station wagon sized but less agile than say the e55 kompressor wagon of the same era. I like them all the same. Would prefer the kompressor engine. There’s one for sale in Oz right now for 47 thousand of our pissweak dollars.
I have a stange feeling for any R63. AMG cars are meant to be driven regardless of model. C63 or AMG GT or even SLS. To me R is the family sport can which is not supposed to be a garage queen. Otherwise why you need a car with such cargo space? And family van means lots of citi driving. Now R63 in particular has pretty poor mpg which makes it impractical car unless you just need a V8 minivan. I guess if you don't care about mpg or don't need bigger minivan like Odyssey etc then buy it. This particular low mileage R63 looks like an investment case. You buy it, never drive it and sell few years later on BaT. Though I like the fact Mercedes decided to make R63 while everyone else never ever tried to make a high performance minivan.
@@r63amgowners79 Yeah though I still think the main purpose of R is to haul some cargo or people. I think it should be slower than E63/C63 with the same engine jus because of the weight difference. But R doesn't look large from outside. I suppose GL or GLS should have similar or very close cargo volume inside. Anyway I'm glad Mercedes made an AMG version of R while everyone else was whining about low sales and other makers discontinued their fun to drive cars.
Later this year, I'm going to swap an M156 into my 2006 R350 I've had for 7 years and put 50k on. I can get a decent one home for about $6k. Wish me luck. No, there will be no video.
