Probably from the TV shows/movies/books we watch and read (ahem, Downton Abbey and Agatha Christie). I usually think of England in terms of immaculate lawns, elegant buildings, going go the theatre, and, of course, posh accents. Despite this is not reality for 95% of the population, it's like (as others have said) thinking of Americans as cowboys or valley girls. I think silly, harmless things like the above examples that people throughout the world sometimes equate with other countries can be quite funny and charming.
