Good video! The 505 certainly is an easy aircraft to get going. And that c.g./gross weight calculator thing is primo! I wish all helicopters had it.
There are a number of different ways of using a CHECK list. Mark described using it one way, and then actually used it in another way. As he said (and I agree), you use the CHECK list to ensure that you've done everything that needs to be done. Thus, you *could* go through the entire pre-start process and then...before you hit the starter button...*then* you go down the list and make sure you haven't forgotten anything. That's how I do it.
However, many pilots prefer to use the CHECK list as a *DO* list - meaning that they perform each task on the list in the order that it appears. They think that it *has* to be done this way. It does not. Doing it like this messes with your "flow" because it has you diverting your attention all around the cockpit. In this case here, Mark *says* that he starts from "top to bottom" - but then he goes from the top (fuel valve, rotor brake) to the bottom (controls, frictions, fire extinguisher), and then back to the middle for switches, etc. So he's kind of contradicting himself. (I suspect that in real life, when flying by himself, he doesn't use the checklist - although he'd never admit that and neither would I. But most commercial pilots I know who fly "simple" helicopters like the 206 and 350 don't use checklists because they feel that their memory is sufficient and adequate.)
What's important is that everything gets checked and set.

Very good instructor. Btw I wonder how no heli video describes natural air forces that influence flying. What about tail wind, side wind, strong wind, vortex ring state, turbulences, rain, sudden change between hot and cold air etc. That is a very important matter to master in order to fly more secure.
