What up Steve! 🫡💯 I stuck around for the ramble 🤣 Is awesome to hear you were able to quit drinking so much. Thats not easy to do.. Ive been "sober" for about 4 years now & i say "sober" because I'll still have a couple drinks on occasion but nothing crazy. (I'm trying to avoid ever getting hungover again😅) You have a strong mindset bro! Good luck with everything 👍🏼 (p.s. having a bunch of games is lame for the wrong reasons but I believe if you are collecting because you truly love & have a special attachment to certain items, then it's a good thing to be able to look back & occasionally relive your past. But also also... you're right, it definitely gets pricey 😅

Haha! I was wondering when this video was gonna drop! 😂 I’ve been waiting for this. You do definitely make some valid points about going for a full set. There definitely are a lot of pros and cons with doing it as I’ve mentioned quite a few times. It can get expensive, especially going for a huge ass library (like PS1 like me), shelf space is HARD however I limit what I pick up for other consoles to make sure I have the room, time to play all this shit is hard to come by but I’ve limited my new gen buying and to be honest, playing all those jank ass PS1 titles brings me a lot of joy more than new gen has. I barely even play my PS5 or Switch these days. I find joy game hunting, but I take my time with the collecting bit. I’ve been doing it for 4 years for the PS1 set and still have a little ways to go. I budget what I get per month for the collection, so I’ll get this here or a heavy hitter down the line. One pro that stands out is that I get to experience a lot of these titles I missed out on growing up. That’s one rewarding thing about collecting is getting to experience those games. Thousand Arms, Legend of Legaia, etc are some I missed out on as a kid and I’m glad I got to play them. Some have made my top 20 games of all time. Experiencing the games has always been the most important thing to me. Sure you can say emulation, but I prefer physical copies. There’s when the nostalgia kicks in for gaming, that physical copy part. I’m not saying going for a full collection is for everyone, because it’s one hell of an endeavor, but I won’t discourage people from wanting to do what makes em’ happy. I’m glad you gave your thoughts on the topic. Keep kicking ass! ✌🏻

I thought I wanted to full set n64 but I gave up before I got way too deep. I have respect for people that buy and display all the turok games, or all the tony hawk games or every resident evil game. I like when people make smaller sets out of a series across multiple consoles. Really cool to see a CIB set of basically any franchise across a few consoles. Looks so cool. Donkey Kong full set would be pretty small, but honestly REALLY REALLY COOL.
I can appreciate that more than a full console set, but different strokes for different folks!

I've went back and forth over the past decade fighting the psychology of owning a large collection. I've accumulated, I've downsized when I've felt the weight of it, and I've re-accumulated. What I've found is -- it's best to have a dedicated and isolated space that you don't have to interact with all the time, that way you can walk away from it, and from the weight of it if the psychology is creeping in. Then if you want to feel that positive nostalgia energy again, you can be in that space when it makes sense.

Excellent answer. Not having to see it when you dont want to makes a big difference. I have a small bedroom i turned unto a study/gameroom, and the walls are lined with shelves full of games. I think its awesome, and half of the fun is staring at it for me, lolol, though i dont really play games anymore. But i wouldnt want to live in that room or see it every day. It is definitely not at all necessary to play the games, and i wouldnt have the time to play all of them even if i wanted to. It is fun to have now, but i have no qualms with selling it all one day if i decide i no konger want it, and i kind of expect that to happen.

Hey Steve! Just met you and I share the same exact feelings with you, especially with the alcohol. I have sold close to 50% of my collection the past 3-4 years. My collection got so bad that by the time I looked at my game shelf, I would get severely overwhelmed and would ultimately decide not to play video games. However, over the years I have resisted the urge to purchase any game that looks good, and just stick with games I know I’ll play and beat. Legend of Zelda or Pikmin are good examples. I will play and beat those games over and over, so that is what I buy. It has reduced my game collecting and the amount of unbeaten/unplayed games on my shelf. This has made gaming cheaper and more enjoyable. Every year I go through my collection and sell games that I no longer want. Gaming and collecting can be amazing, it just needs to be kept under control. I loved your video, Steve. It seems we share much in common. I will subscribe!

That's why you have to build a curated collection. I have alot of games, but that's just because I have many consoles. Feels like I'm building a library of books for each system. Everytime I get the itch to collect I just buy the console and modding tools. It’s several hundred dollars but still a shit load cheaper than collecting the games.

I might do that again but with a weeb skin on my other wii u, it's japanese region so it seems appropriate.

The issue with whole console collecting is that you get addicted to the endorphin rush of purchasing something. Eventually, you run out of that rush for the specific console and move onto the next one. You mentioned moving into vinyl collections, but that's just another drug and is very expensive.

Hello there! I'm from Brazil, and I'm happy that TH-cam recommended your channel. Around here, people usually pay 1/3 of the minimum wage for the newest games... Old games, by their rare standards, are way more expensive... There's a huge market for re-labeled and pirated games that imitate the originals, just to help gamers keep their setups better without spending tons of money! It's so nice to see an American complaining about prices to sustain and having a video game collection, especially since the market over there, at least for us Brazilians, seems so much cheaper, more dynamic, and better for consumers. For obvious reasons, the video game industry profits mainly come from there and Europe, not from emerging countries like Brazil, Mexico, India, and others... Keep up the good work!

Decided to get back into collecting but I only what I enjoy and play, no shovelware or games I won’t play. Really getting back into handheld especially like the Gameboy Advance. Great thing about handheld collecting, doesn’t take up the space of a full size console. Keep up the good work.

Again, great video man! And congrats on getting off the booze!
For me the big collection isn't too much of an issue "yet" I'd say, perhaps because I focus only on Xbox (OG, 360 One and current) but what I felt is mostly annoying and make me feel like a hoarder sometimes are the little trinkets lying around on shelves etc, like figurines, amiibo, boxes and more. Maybe because I'm getting older and do not want to see my gaming corner look like a teenager's room but I made a big cleanup with that and now only got a handful of amiibo sitting elsewhere FAR from the game collection. Feels cleaner and more focused.

My backlog is insane, literally dont have time to play them. I have over 300 physical games and all the consoles to go with them. It is insane the amount of games you accumulate over time and the amount of money is crazy. Like you channel and again thank you for calling out the game scalpers. Which has caused me to stop collecting anything older than ps4. As i love rpgs from back in the day a majority of those games are between 50-300 dollars for a perfect copy with a manual. Ill just emulate from here on out. Thanks again, for thoughts on gaming and collecting.

I was able to get pretty much any game I wanted growing up, but I mostly stuck with Playstation (1,2,3). I stopped playing cold turkey at the age of 25 (I am 39 now) and only had a small box of games at the end of it (maybe 30?), after 15 years of buying games. Whilst I have many fond memories of all those games (I always chose games very carefully), there's probably only two or three that I wish I could still play, and really nothing from the new generation of games that looks all that appealing. Millennials had a good run with video games, getting to see the evolution from simple 8-bit Sega/Atari up to the incredible PS3 and Xbox 360. I am grateful for that, and am glad that I didn't carry on gaming into my 30s.

But my hobbies are basically reading and fixing things (and aquarium keeping). I have kids, so naturally they also get a big chunk of my time. I would encourage any man to seriously consider dropping video games altogether by the time they're 25, even earlier, as it is an addictive vice and it is just time spent wasting your potential.

I have a pretty massive game collection, I would have to say its pretty awesome to what I own, the part I hated was moving from place to place, I made some bad decisions, not in a horrible way, I sold my house in Las Vegas and moved to Phoenix, then moved back to Las Vegas, and moving my game collection which is the most stuff that I have, more than clothes, furniture, and everything else combined, was the worst, especially the guide books, those are heavy as hell. So finally I just bought another house and an now able to get my game collection out again and display, but as far as me playing all the games that I have accumulated for over 30 years, I know I wont play every one of them.I am not moving these games again, lol

For me I think what you are saying is true, but for me I want to collect them because most of the games from those days I simply never got to play, my parents refused to buy me a NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, they didn't cave till I basically begged them to get me an N64 when legend of zelda Ocarina of time came out, and even then they were heavy anti-gaming to the max and only allowed me to get 5 games for N64, and after that I wasnt allowed to buy new games for myself only borrow 1 game at a time from friends, I had money too I started commercial fishing in Alaska with my uncle when I was 13 in the summer in bettween school, can u imagine being a kid who actually worked every summer and had your own money, and my parents literally never allowed me to have a TV or a computer or any games in my room it sucked really bad. So for me I just wanna play that game I either never played or watched my cousins or friends play at someone elses houses when I was just watching and barely getting to play at all. In the 90s I loved going to my uncles house to play NES but it was only fun when my cousins wernt there. If there were theyd hog the controllers for 4+ hours and only give it to me when they knew my mom was literally on her way up the stairs at my uncles house to say it was time for me to go home, it was brutal man. NES, SNES, sega Genesis, orginal Xbox my entire childhood was spent dreaming about games I saw commercials on for on tv and unless my friend had it I wasnt getting it even having the money cuz my parents hated gaming and just wennt having it, so for me its not about having them on the wall, I want to collect cuz I recently got an expensive gaming computer and new games suck. i want to collect old games so I can play them, I want my friends to come over and play with my in person this play of the internet crap needs to die... -end rant

Another thing that I've really noticed as I've got older, is just how much of a pain it is owning so much "junk". I recently got 50 fresh bags and boards for some old comics I cherished from the early 90's, I saved those 50 comics, then just gave away the rest. I'm currently doing that with my small collection.
I'm curating a top 100 games within my physical library.
I feel like 100 games is enough to create an all time list. While still being an achievable goal for a backlog throughout life.
Anything that doesn't make it on the list is gonna be sold.
The rules for my list is
      1. Must be on playable on the switch, series x, 3ds, or wii (it's what I have atm)
This opens up wii u, gamecube, ds xbox 360, og xbox as posible entrees.
      2. Must have a physical release (no digital releases)
      3. If it's released as a collection... I'll count it as 1 slot on the list. Example: FF 1-6 pixel remaster or Advance wars 1+2, etc..
My current list sits at 72/100.. so I still got 28 slots left.
TBh, I could probably just do a top 25-50 between all of them and only pick out the best game within a franchise... as that would cut out a lot of it.

The feeling you get booting it up and going down Nostalgia lane last no more then a hour, then you realize how out dated and clunky games used to be. Then it’s over sadly.
