Just purchased a Single barrel here in Dothan Alabama today. $52 a bottle. This bottle has a strong smell of ripe bananas and caramel. Nice peppery spicy going down the hatch.
    Love it.

I took a taste test at Four Roses last summer. I really enjoyed it and the different types they offered during the test. Locally the only type available to me is the standard and the small batch. I am finding that I like the initial sweetness of the standard. I wish the others were available to me locally. Great info, thanks.

i love Four Roses, I'll tell you a story, i was in a RiteAid waiting for my brother to buy whatever he was getting, i was eyeballing the Four Roses Yellow label as it was only like $17, i decided to buy it, taste wise, i mostly get pears, i loved it despite my hating pears. i enjoyed it so much that i decided to buy the other 3 bottles. the small batch i taste strawberries, and the single barrel i get plums, the small batch select is tough for me, i dont think im equipped enough to describe accurately what i taste, i only stated drinking whiskey a year or so ago, but i think id call it sweet wood. ordering them from least favorite to most favorite: small batch select, yellow barrel, small batch, single barrel. im not saying i dislike the small batch select, i REALLY enjoy the higher proof, and overall its really good. i think im ordering them in my perfered fruit taste as most of them taste of fruit, and i love that.

Small Batch Select is presently my favorite bourbon. It has exactly the flavor profile I want in a borbon, is very smooth for the proof, and is non-chill filtered (I am heavily biased towards non-chill filtered liquor).

Thanks for this great review! Have only had the single barrel and recently the small batch select. For now, I really enjoy the SB more because it seemed more consistent from first nose to finish, and I was able to enjoy all the layers. As you noted, the proof is more up front on the SBS on the first nose and first sip, and from my experience, the heat never really dissipated enough to enjoy what came after. I did cut both with a splash. Just opened the SBS, so will try to see if I can get more out of it. Love the whole line comparison!

    • @mybourbonjourney
      @mybourbonjourney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Eric, thank you very much for watching and commenting, love to hear people's experiences with there bourbons. At the end of the day you drink what you like, you're never wrong no matter what anyone else says is better! The SBS may open up a bit more for you and start to shine a little more as it gets some air, that has been my experience with it. Keep enjoying whatever it is you enjoy! Cheers 🥃

I know of a few stores within driving distance from me that have Four Roses barrel strength store picks, which I'm trying to get my hands on first before any of the regular Four Roses products. Your lineup review has got me thinking I should pick up the Small Batch Select first though. Unlike a number of other bourbons, the regular 4 product offerings from Four Roses are always available in my area. I always see all four of these on the shelves. Which is why I was looking to find more info on them, nothing quite beats shelf available bourbon! Good bourbon is bourbon you can actually find!

    Hey Scott:
Picked up a bottle of FOUR ROSES Small Batch Select a few days ago, here are my impressions:
    SLÁINTE
    Mike
FOUR ROSES Small Batch Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
    3/07/21
52% ABV, Non-Chillfiltered A Mixture of recipes: OBSV, OBSK, OESF, OESV, OESF
This is my 3rd glass from the bottle so air has mixed with the spirit.
COLOR: Mahogany with a nice ring with many legs running swiftly
NOSE: Vanilla with an underpinning of wood char, a hint of mint
PALATE: Very Velvety Mouthfeel, Caramel, pepper tingling as I swirl it around a hint of wood char
FINISH: Creamy going down with a drying sense and light pepper on the tongue
with 1 drop of spring water
    NOSE: a more even vanilla
PALATE: Dusty Corn Sweetness, Mouthfeel remains creamy. some alcohol burn and numbness
FINISH: Very Drying and puckering through out my mouth; resolving to a mouthwatering sense with sugary sweetness the vanilla reappears.
With 2 drops of spring water
NOSE: Light Caramel Candy with a Malty sweetness as well
PALATE: Pepper spice arrival with vanilla underpinning and a sugary sweetness an faint wood char with a slight burn on my tongue; that goes away as I swirl
FINISH: Mouthwatering with dryness throughout my mouth and faint pepper on my tongue.
This bourbon really benefits from the Non-Chill-filtering. The whole experience is rich. The alcohol burn was light. I enjoyed the dusty corn note with one drop of water. I always enjoy corn notes and their sweetness. I enjoyed seeing the liquid cloud up after I added water. The malt sweetness from the barley is even evident. I totally enjoyed this bourbon. Every glass has been a pleasure. Recommended!

This is a great comparison to some truly wonderful bourbons. I wasn't aware of the chill-filter, so that makes sense about the more oily mouth feel of the Select. I am a big Four Roses guy and need to pick up a bottle of Select to try! Thanks for making this video.

Thanks buddy, appreciate that. Yes I'm a huge fan of Four Rose's fan as well, had a great time doing this video too. Felt it may really help for anyone looking for a Four Roses bourbon. Also to address the non chill filtering, for me it's very important as it allows for those oiles and fatty acids to remain which allow for more flavors to remain. Cheers buddy!

@@mybourbonjourney I really enjoyed it. Definitely a more complex sip than other standard Four Roses. Typical strong warm flavors (vanilla, cinnamon) but a really nice oak flavor. I thought the oak was so strong, that it tasted towards a turmeric chalky taste. My better half didn't agree with that. We both enjoyed it and I noticed a "fresh" ethanol-type aftertaste, but in a good way, not a burn. It was very unique. I am going to give it another go tonight to see if I change my tasting notes. Thanks for the heads up a nice bourbon!

    Hey Scott:
Thanks for the Head to Head. I enjoy the Single Barrel and have gone through a couple of bottles. Their entry level expression was the first bourbon I bought on recommendation of a store clerk, who said it was a good example of what bourbon is.
I was happy you reminded me that the standard expression is a blend of all of their 10 recipes. The Brooklyn Brewery has partnered with Four Roses to create beer B.B. Four Roses, Black Ops where Brooklyn's Russian Imperial Stout which is bottled at 10% ABV is aged in former Four Roses Barrels of all recipes then bottled. I recently bought a bottle of the Standard release and Sipped it after a Glass of Four Roses Black Ops 2019 and as expected the Notes in the Bourbon highlighted what I had experienced in the beer. If you can find Brooklyn Fours Roses Black Ops in your liquor or Beer store Match the two for yourself.

    Hey Scott:
Picked up my second bottle of the Four Roses Small Batch tonight. I am enjoying the neck pour as a night cap. Opening the bottle, I got a distinct Cherry note which is nice.. At present, I also have a bottle of the Single Barrel on my shelf. In addition, I have Brooklyn Brewery's Four Roses Black Ops Beer 2019, which used barrels of the recipes for Four Roses Small Batch to age their Russian Imperial Stout. I was present at the initial roll out tasting party. There are 2019 and 2020 vintages. These are bottle conditioned beers; so the beer continues to age in the bottle due to residual yeast. The 2019 vintage has nice bourbon features in the beer notes. I am looking forward to comparing and contrasting! I do want to get the Small Batch "Select" in the not to distant future to continue ny exploration!!

    Sorted. Each bottle
Stands on its own and offers value while at the same time

Add a teaspoon of filtered water & you will get a different flavor profile. That is my rule of thumb for anything over 40%. Early Times BIB would be my exception to that rule. It's an easy drinker. Filtered water seems to thin it out & it looses some flavor.

    • @mybourbonjourney
      @mybourbonjourney  ปีที่แล้ว

I have no issue adding water and can appreciate what water can do to a whiskey. However, adding a teaspoon of water to let's say even 1.5oz of whiskey is going to bring the proof way down and really affect the profile of that whiskey. I'd honestly recommend adding only a couple drps of water at a time to see how that amount of water changes the whiskey for better or worse. That's just my suggestion, you sip it however you like and what tastes best for you. Cheers and thanks for watching and the comment! 🥃

I should have reviewed this channel before purchasing. I got the single barrel and not enjoying it too much. I’ve given it a lot of time to revisit but the alcohol seems to be overpowering the flavor even though the proof not too high.

Hey Tragic504 try adding just a couple drops of water to the single barrell bourbon, that at times can help to bring out some really nice flavors or change the profile slightly. That's a trick that can really apply to just about any bourbon. Let me know if that improves it at all. Cheers and keep me posted! Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@mybourbonjourney I tried that but the flavor just seems a little dull. Maybe just that bottle or barrel. I’m used to drinking higher proofs.

That could very well be, have you tried Small Batch Select with a little higher proof and non chill filtered? I think its a fantastic bourbon and one that doesn't get talked about nearly enough anymore. Cheers!

This is $34 plus tax in canada so almost $40 dollars for th basic four roses. At that price i can get way better that holds way more flavour and more rye spice like lot 40 same price. If you want a rye mixer in canada i can get for 20-25 a 750ml
