  • In this interview specialists Catherine W. MacWillie, Kevin Hickey and William Bernet discuss the severe and sometimes fatal consequences of parental alienation, drawing on various cases such as the case of John Mast who was fatally shot by his ex father-in-law when picking up his children for visitation.
The phenomenon has broader impact on society. Family law issues are suggested to contribute significantly to crime in the United States, with one expert estimating it accounts for 25% of all crime.
The discussion also covers an increase in violence and homicides linked to family law disputes, including mass shootings and cases where alienated parents kill their children to prevent custody changes. These incidents have broader implications, such as innocent bystanders being harmed.
The interview emphasizes the need for safer visitation exchanges and better handling of family law cases to prevent such tragedies. Law enforcement officials note a rise in family law-related calls and the psychological toll on children manipulated by one parent against the other. The conversation concludes with a call for more research and public awareness to address the often-hidden crimes and fatalities associated with parental alienation.
The interview underscores the urgent need for systemic changes in how family law cases are managed - and enforcement of court orders - to protect all involved, especially children, from the potentially deadly consequences of parental alienation.
William Bernet published among others a paper on this subject in the European Journal of Parental Alienation Practice in 2023, titled Parental Alienation: A Violent and Potentially Lethal Social and Psychological Phenomenon:

They examined publicly documented cases of murder and suicide of those affected by parental alienation. The aim was to identify narratives and behaviours consistent with parental alienation theory featuring psychological and social markers of potential lethality.
