  • Hi! My name is Katie Jarvis and I am a K-6 Elementary Art Teacher at a title one school just outside of Washington, D.C. In this video, I share several stories of hard lessons I learned about being an elementary art teacher. Many of the stories focus on my first few years of teaching and school life outside of the art room. I give advice on what is most important about being an art teacher. This is an excellent video for anyone considering going into art education, new art teachers, or experienced teachers that need some inspiration.

Love what you have to say here and especially your enthusiasm. This year is my first-year teaching art in two Elementary Schools in AACPs in Maryland. I have been a full-time Artist and raising my daughters before that. I am absolutely loving my new career as an Artist & Teacher because I get to witness the growth in my students. I look forward to each day of meeting my students, getting warm hugs, and sincere comments. I do wonder if this enthusiasm is going to get old. What I also am noticing is how my friends and family respond to my enthusiasm of waking up early and coming home late (they have no idea how much time and planning goes in each project). All they see is if I am so happy going to work, it must be an easy job. I am so grateful to have this opportunity to teach. I am actively working towards my certification which is going to take me at least two years. Going back to school is also exciting to me because I always wanted to get my MA but never got around to it. Now I have an excellent opportunity to pursue it at my own pace once I am done with my teacher's certification.

I worked overseas at an international school in Duesseldorf. Teaching Art in International schools is the best job. Parents support and appreciate what you do. There were great facilities and budget. I got to organize double period sessions for most grades except primary. Just sharing this as there is a need for teachers internationally. We were accredited by the IB organization and ECIS. There were 8 periods a day I generally taught 2 , double period sessions and one single. The rest were planning periods and lunch. I also had an Art technician that prepared the materials, helped with clean up and put up displays when requested. This was all amazing to have such help I. The art room.

Thank you so much for telling these stories. I teach art for an elementary school district and I feel overworked and undervalued. I teach at 7 schools and have not enough budget and at a couple schools I have been treated as though I’m not wanted there at all and the kids love art and I know I’m a great teacher and well educated with my BFA in Fine Art but my home school classroom is used for every meeting and after school and sometimes I have to work between 5pm and 8pm just because I have to wait for afterschool to finish. I feel totally unsupported but I know this is what I want to do. Your lessons helped me get past a hard day today.

So how did you handle the extra planning time situation? I have a lot of plan but I am required to do rti twice a day and if we have a school event, I lose my plan time in the afternoon. I am at school all the time... they said I should be lucky I get more than an hour

Ugh! I know this is sadly reality for many art teachers. I ended up switching schools but I also advocated for myself. I pushed for extra time to display work, which I got. I also worked out that I could prep items while I supervised rti. Good luck!

Hi, just wondering if you ever unveiled a collaborative piece? Invited a few students parents etc. different to an exhibition.
