Well.. ‘chemicals’ is not what you mean.. but we generally understand the sentiment. But you do have to be more specific about which chemicals that are the problem.. and that becomes very debatable. Health is not as easy as we wish it was. It’s not a simple.. remove these things, and viola! You’ll be healthy! Doesn’t work that way. What’s good for some, is not good for others, and vice versa. What we need removed are the things that can be proved without a doubt are bad for everyone. And to know what things we, individually, need to avoid. Which, sadly, isn’t always easy to prove. Especially when you have a vested party providing contrary evidence and pouring money into the process to keep selling their product.

Exactly. The panel talked about limited regulation "like the Founders wanted". In 1800, the average life expectancy was about 37. Now it's about double that, and a large part of that increase comes from government regulation of food safety, workplace safety, pollution, sanitation, and public health (like vaccine mandates).

Because the idea is not that it hinders farmers, but it restricts corporations for putting more crap in the food.

When I was in Public Health, as a Biomedical Technologist, scientist, USDA requirements were different. Before 2000, NO meat was NOT allowed to be processed for food within 45 days of antibiotics and NO hormones were allowed AT ALL! Now animals and meats are loaded with both for bulk and increased profit. Food ingredients were not allowed in foods for human consumption if they had certain listed dyes, of non digestible or artificial ingredients! This changed with Congress in the early 2000s for corporations' increased profits.

Bill, I've been a fan for decades, but I think you need to ask more critical questions of so-called "alternative medicine" proponents. You're a comedian. Here's one of my favorite jokes: "What do you call 'alternative medicine' that has been proven to work? Answer: 'Medicine.'"
The essential conflict is between individualism and collectivism. Public health officials do studies and they say, here's a town of X people where there was fluoride in the water and here's another town with the same population where there wasn't fluoridation. In the second town, there were Y more cases of dental issues (cavities, gum disease, possibly more serious issues). Therefore, let's put fluoride in the water supply. This is the same for vaccines, iodized salt, and countless other issues. Do public health people sometimes get it wrong? Of course. But, the issue is that a public-health official responsible for a population of tens of thousands of people can't take into account everybody's individual preference. It's infeasible.
The question of being able to "accept risk" is an important one. But, the reality is that medical practitioners are going to end up treating all the people who "roll the dice" and drink un-fluoridated water or drink raw milk or fail to get vaccinated. Many of those people will be unable to pay for that treatment and the rest of us will end up paying for it. Alternatively, if the people who get sick from taking medical risks have insurance, then the insurance rates will end up going up for those of us who are content to follow the expert's consensus on pasteurized milk, vaccines, etc.
Also, a lot of these issues have been studied and re-studied and re-studied to death. Do we really have to go back to ground zero as to whether, e.g., vaccines are effective? It makes sense to challenge a specific vaccine by a specific company using a specific technology, and that is the whole point of requiring FDA approval for drugs. But, many people seem either delusional or attention-seeking in their denial of settled medical wisdom. Please don't be one of them, Bill. :)

You have some real trouble showing, just like with tobacco or sugar. Even Bill has been pushing for this 'no damage' ideology for years, despite that now, after the facts and science can get out, it shows a pull towards a reality, that does not necessarily live up to that promise of 'better than alcohol, tobacco and sugar'. So not devalueing that you can smoke it or whatever, but the random people in this case, were wrong too. Dr. Casey Means’ comments on the difference in life expectancy and infant mortality between the US and Switzerland are not just oversimplified-they border on outright misrepresentation. As a professor of anesthesiology, I feel compelled to point out that these disparities are not rooted in a lack of physician training in prevention or nutrition, nor in a supposed disinterest of US physicians in preventative health. The real culprits are systemic issues in the American healthcare landscape and broader societal choices.
The US lacks universal healthcare, which limits access to necessary medical services for millions of Americans. Violent deaths, largely driven by liberal gun laws, also play a significant role in shortening life expectancy. Furthermore, the prevalence of sedentary lifestyles, widespread consumption of processed foods, and other lifestyle factors reflect broader cultural norms, not the failings of medical professionals.
By supporting Dr. Means’ misguided statements, Bill Maher undermines his credibility and inadvertently mirrors the kind of misinformation he often criticizes in figures like Donald Trump. If we want to address these health disparities meaningfully, we need to focus on structural changes and cultural shifts-not unfairly place blame on physicians.

When listening to that, I was wondering if there was something radically different about medical education of doctors in Japan and doctors in the States.
I'm not a doctor, but have been to hospitals in both countries. The medical questions and procedures (inserting an IV, types of questions asked, x-rays, etc) seemed the same. Logistics and especially costs were radically different. The hospital in Japan was much more flexible in scaling from emergency to non-emergency care as needed, stuff that would have required separate out-patient appointments in the States was right there and done the same day, and actual full costs (Japanese government paid + personal, vs Insurance + out of pocket) were about 1/4 what they would have been in the States.
It made me believe that the longer life expectancy and lower overall health care spending there has much to do with far greater efficiency in how they run their system. Admittedly, it was limited exposure to the Japanese healthcare system, but an eye-opener.

There are a ton of ways to make the consumption of food make you consume more even though you've had huge portions. Also a calorie isn't a calorie. I can eat 1500 calories worth of burgers and not put on weight but eating 1000 calories of soda or french fries I'll definitely put on weight.
I know because I had a coupon that gave me free burger, drink and fries every day for an entire month. I noticed I was putting on weight and half way through the month I cut out the drink and fries and I noticed the biggest culprit was the drink, with fries in second and the sandwich was basically a non-issue. So even though the meal was 2000 calories with 1500 of those calories from the drink and fries, swapping the drink and fries for more burgers didn't cause me to put on weight even though the calorie consumption was the same.

For every $1 spent, communities save $38 in dental care costs-a win for public health and taxpayers. Recognized by the CDC as a top 20th-century achievement, fluoridation benefits everyone, especially those without access to regular dental care. At the recommended 0.7 mg/L, it's safe, effective, and a simple way to prevent unnecessary suffering from tooth decay. Chris's point about more and more people voting as independents should be a wake up call to both big parties, but the key to making that work is allowing open primaries. I live in a state that does not provide for open primaries, which is fundamentally unfair. If my state did, I would register independent in a heartbeat and never look back. If we are to survive as a democracy, we need more candidates who run as independents, and more voters (regardless of how they are registered) to vote and act like independents. Both big parties have lost their way completely, and identifying as a doesn't really help things get done in Washington or anywhere else for that matter. Establishing, acting and voting as an independent is the only thing that will shake up the system to move away from partisan behavior and help to turn things around IMO.

WRT fluoride, my community voted in a plebiscite to stop adding it to the water supply. Cavity rates for kids went through the roof, which is heartbreaking for folks that can’t afford good dental care. Fluoride has now been reintroduced following another plebiscite. The advantage of drinking it as opposed to the fluoride in toothpaste is that toothpaste is topical, it impacts the surface. Fluoride in the water is more penetrative and strengthens the entire tooth. Perhaps the best solution is to remove it from the community supply, but sell / subsidize / give away tablets to add at home for those that choose to do it.

    • @decanuck
      @decanuck หลายเดือนก่อน

There's a line of research showing that if kids' diet isn't sugary processed junk , their teeth don't need fluoride supplementation in order for them to avoid cavities. And there's an even bigger line of research showing that adding fluoride decreases kid's IQ by stunting neurological development. Making a trade to permanently damage your child's brain to temporarily strengthen their teeth--a goal which can be achieved in MANY other ways--is a bad deal.

I was in dentistry for years before I became a therapist. I worked for IHS. Fluoride worked, but not enough. We worked to educate about oral health care, in the Native and local communities. I don't think it's relevant, scientifically, to rely on water, changing oral heath. I do think it might help, but I'll never know. When I saw a child with 13 cavities, I could say, "well, maybe there would have been 20.." So, maybe it helps, which is good, but I still had to treat that child pain and 13 cavities. Edit- Oh, and by the way, the community I worked in, most kids did not even have a toothbrush and never learned to floss, and didn't have toothpaste. Our outreach program, education, and grants, helped families and kids get what they needed.

I’m tired of uneducated people and even DOCTORS making assumptions about our health based on a very limited scope of information. When you get into elements of public healthcare and infectious disease stuff, etc, like the raw milk giving people bird flu, you have to be more careful. Infections are not self-limiting and can mutate and spread through a population. Choices in that regard have to be multilayered i. terms of risk assessment because they have the potential to not only impact you, but people around you, strangers, society, etc.

founding fathers is pointless. humans are exploiting wildlife animals and plants and then politicians want to mandate people to have kids and rejects all the exploitation. we are too overpopulated and animals and plants are having their natural habitats destroyed. humans are forcing them to suffer in domestication where they are genetically altered, lack natural selection, and have no reproductive rights.

RFK Jr is on steroids. And plenty of people before him have tried to advocate a cleaner food system...without the crazy conspiracy extremism.

Everyone advocates it. No one makes a campaign centred around it and promises to take steps against it.

He's not on steroids He's on hormone replacement therapy. Steroids is when you abuse it. He is taking therapeutic doses which probably 90% of many over each 40 should be doing nowadays. He's the model of health he practice what he preaches and if everybody just did what he did would become the healthiest nation in the world. Instead we got people like you criticize him for a lifestyle that is very commendable. Just taking a look at you you might want to look into his route as well

You've got no idea what the living hell you're discussing. On a very serious level. If you don't know the difference between Steroids and HRT you shouldn't open your mouth.

Living in the United States now is like being on the sinking Titanic and being told there are NO lifeboats and no ships coming to rescue us.
