Hi Michael...I went from Modells to leather/forger plate, to SG Classis, to Silver Star/Snyder,and now with Edea, and about to get custom boots. If I did it again, I would start in the $400-500 ranger and go from there. No more sweat/hot boot issues, and even Reidell made their higher end boots lighter. The bar is to deal with torque and torsion when doing more advanced moves, especially jumps and high torque movements. Back before, plates would actually snap in two.
YAY!! NEW ROLLER SKATES! LOL 😂 Edea is an awesome Italian roller skate manufacturer...Edea is super fancy stuff! It’s very difficult to go wrong with Riedell’s but the type of chassi and wheels do make a huge difference...I’m sure you know that... I love my “new” Riedell quads, which is a couple years old... You definitely want wheels by Bones and Swiss Bones bearings... However, not all Bones wheels are the same so you gotta do your search there...also, depending on how often you skate, your style/level, type of floor you mostly skate on, and just personal preference really, you want to know and decide on wheel hardness. The higher the number, the harder the wheels. Harder wheels are more ideal for artistic and dancing skating...not for Derby...and not necessarily the choice to many jamming skaters but again, that’s just a matter of personal preference. The hardness of my wheels is 101A , which is pretty hard...but that’s what I’m used to...I think the hardest wheels is something like 103, which is often what many pro artistic roller skaters use. Derby skaters usually use softer and wider wheels, such as 93 to 98A hardness... My Riedell quads have a metal frame...some call it trunks other say “chassis”...you got the idea. My old Riedell quads had a jumping bar...I think they used jumping bars in the past because the trunk/chassis in older artistic skates were made of actual steel, which is far heavier than aluminum...my artistic skating coaches (former US champs!) told me that the jumping bars were to “buffer” the impact during jumps...which makes perfect sense...kind of like “car suspensions”... However, a couple years ago, I learned that jumping bars are no longer needed in quads because the metal used to build the chassi of current quad roller skates is the type they use in aircrafts...very light but extremely sturdy aluminum alloy! To me, that was absolutely an improvement in roller skates design! Leather is better but they make very good quality vinyl boots these days...so I wouldn’t worry too much about that. However, I invested in a pair of toe protectors for my boots and am finding it’s absolutely making a huge difference in conserving the part of the boots which I usually “abuse the most”! It’s not very costly and I personally feel that, considering the price of skates and boots, toe protectors are worth every penny! Prior to investing on boot toe protectors, I used fabric boot covers but in my case, those ripped rather easily and it truly didn’t justify the cost...because it also didn’t quite protect my boots the way I expected it would. Though we invested a lot in my Riedell quads, I’m not ashamed to say I never purchased a bag for it and continue to use the original Riedell box that it came in. LOL 😂 Nothing wrong with bags designed to carry skates but I find that the Riedell box, which conveniently comes with a carry on handle, keeps my skates in place hence avoids friction during transit. Good design bags work just as well... The trunk/chassi, wheels, and bearings in my old Riedell quads is in amazing shape and I would’ve simply replaced the boots if it wasn’t to the fact that my feet grew after I gave birth to our son! LOL 😂 my old quad boots were size 5 and now I wear a size 6!! The old skates trunk isn’t long enough for size 6 boots. To me, that was fine because after a few back surgeries due a congenital spinal issue, my body truly “loved” the new and much lighter Riedell quads! We purchased our skates from a bike shop somewhere in Maryland...off route 15...or maybe off route 11?? Sorry, can’t quite remember but it’s not too difficult to find them online...they let me try my new skates on and I “rolled” around their rather small store floor, which truly helped because my wheels weren’t as tight as I like it to be...so they tightened my wheels right then... The only part of getting brand new roller skates that I don’t like is breaking them in! In my case, it only took a few roller skating sessions break my new skates in and to have my feet feel “at home again”! By the way, isn’t it time for web designers create a ROLLER SKATE ICON?? I’d say it’s been long overdue!!! 😡 These 😎👉⛸ are truly offensive!!! LOL 😂 Not fair to have ice skating blades and completely ignore QUAD WHEELS... A skateboard 😎👉 🛹 is NOT THE SAME as QUAD ROLLER SKATES! 😤😳🙄😂😜 I’d like black, white, and “cotton candy” stylish “disco” QUADS stickers, please??!!! LOL 🤣😂😆😅 In-line skaters can do their own “icon protesting” but they also deserve their own in-line skates stickers...😬🤣 God bless and hope you’re having a ton of safe, awesome fun jamming at the rink!! 😊👍
You got a polymer plate…”cross bar”. Your wheels may come with a coating on em. If so, it comes off with use. I used to let kids put my wheels on their skates to wear the coating off lol. They are slippery until the coating is off. Tightening the trucks makes them more stiff. Loosening gives them more flexibility. You can take the toe stop off and replace with a plug, if you dont use them.
Just got my youngest son this exact pair, it's his first pair, he is 11 and I got my oldest son the uptown rythem he 16, gotta get them doing something physical.
Really enjoyed your vlog! Something I'm having a hard time getting started!!! Now being in my 40s, I'm coming back to quad skating. My first pair of skates I got as a kid, I think my dad wanted us skating out of the womb. Because, we always had skates. My first gift wrapped skates, I was 5 years old. Then we gave up quads for ice skates, when we moved to Alaska. I ice skated, from the time I was 8 years old, until my 40s. When I moved away from where I can ice skate. So now, I'm coming back to quad skating. So far, in loving it. I got the Impalas, Chicago's and Roller Derby Cruzes. I don't care much for roller blading/ inline skates. I don't like the bulky look and feel.
Hey man, that's a great story. Glad to hear you are back into quad skating. I haven't skated consistently for about 4 years now, because I was in graduate school for about two years, and haven't reconnected with the sport due to the COVID setback. I do hope to continue some time in the future. Peace, love, and happy skating!
I am about to purchase some Reidel Angels. You have had time to check yours out. What do you think of them so far? Also are these mens sizes so I would order one size down that my normal shoe size????
When I lived in Massachusetts, back in the mid '90s, I would inline skate along the Charles River in Cambridge. The city would block off the street on the MIT/Harvard side of the river, and it was a fabulous time for me and my skate friends, skating across the bridge from the MIT/Harvard side to the Boston University side, then alongside the river near the "Hatch Shell"! I was in my mid 20's and Life was fabulous!
Thank you so much for this video! I've got Moxi's, and I'm getting my boyfriend into skating with these! I notice that these have the same plates too. How does the ankle feel for you?
Yes, that's right. That metal bar that goes from the inner wheel to the outer wheel is called the Truck, and it's bound to the skate's plates via the cushions and that big screw/bolt.
Yeah man. I've had a lot of fun with them. I unfortunately had to take some time off due to graduate school & to give my knees a break, but I love being on my skates!
The plates are holding up just fine. I haven't really worn the skates a lot, because I slacked off just before the COVID pandemic. So, pray that my inspiration comes along and rejuvenates me. 😁😁
My 1st pair of skates had metal wheels for outdoor skating. They were really fun for learning as I was 8 and 9 years old. My next pair I got in my early twenties. I don't remember the brand, but they've lasted me until now, about 30 years. I still have them, but the synthetic leather cracks and peels and leaves a mess on the floor or ground, and they are a little too tight for my feet. Therefore, I like my new Riedell's the best with the Roller Bones wheels. 😊😊🙌🙌
Yes, they are fine for outside, just change the wheels to a softer wheel to absorb rocky or unsmooth surfaces. Then switch to a harder wheel for indoor skating. There are plenty of TH-cam videos discussing indoor versus outdoor wheels. Happy and safe skating, and peace out!
Hey Amari, thanks for the compliment. My sinuses were really stopped up during this entire video, and I was trying to breathe and not sound like I was suffocating. I was actually weaning myself off of a sinus spray. 3 years later and the sinus issues are completely resolved. Yay!!
Hey, how do you like the roller skates? I want to buy them. Are they good for danceskating? Do you have a good balance? Are the cushions stiff? Thank you :)
