2020 Tribute! Switched out all electronics with a Mojotone prewired kit....changes pups to SD Pearly Gates. This guitar sounds like a professional's tool! Love it.
do you know the difference between this model and the "average" american model? i don't know much about SG's and i don't understand how is this model priced like an epiphone yet it is american made. I am saving for a really good guitar and i am looking at SG's because i find the neck really confortable and of course i like it's history and overall features. I want a good guitar with good pickups, nut, eletronics etc i don't wanna pay for the brand only. I have an harley benton hb35 (es335 copy) guitar, and the construction is great, couldn't tell the difference between it and a gibson/epi/ibanez, the only thing it has really cheap parts, but let's say i upgrade them i would have a fantastic guitar for 400/500 euros. If i spend up to a 1000 (even second hand) i want something remarkably good. I don't care much about esotic woods or weird inlays etc i want a solid instrument. Ok sorry for the rant lol
I spent a good amount of time at the local guitar shops seeing what I wanted for my next guitar. The tribute sounds great… it even sounded better to me then the Gibson standard. I had a $3000 budget and I Intended to spend more but this guitar just looks and sounds great. It’s shipping to my house now!
The SG has always been THE guitar for me, probably because several of my favorite guitarists use them, but I have never found a Gibson that suited me. I've tried, I've modded, and I've finally settled on an Ibanez lawsuit SG that just works for me. The guitar wasn't stock when I bought it, so I figured I could mod it a bit. New frets, and a set of Bare Knuckle pickups, a Painkiller/Cold Sweat combo. Just neet to find some push/pull pots that would fit in the cavity to get the coil splits happening. I would like to try having the down position be a split neck, and to pull it up for humbucking. Cool guitars for sure.
Upgraded my 2016 with a mirror polished aluminum pickguard, installed chrome pickup covers and modified rings, also added an aftermarket switch plate and knobs. This guitar now looks very unique and is a nice departure from the generic looking S.G's that are out there. Good vid!
I love this guitar, I want the tribute, but I don't wanna install pu covers LoL. The walnut is fire, I need this guitar! You made some awesome up grades, and I like your playing, very heavy bruh!!!! All the best brother
I own a 2020 SG Tribute. I’m happy with the guitar; however, I just spent the money to buy a set of Mojotone ‘59 Historic Clone humbuckers, four 500k audio taper pots, a new “L” toggle switch and a couple .22 caps to replace the original electronics. Curious to see how it sounds. I’m going to use the 490 pickups for a future guitar build project.
Are those just the stock pick ups in the guitar I’m hearing in the mix? That’s the exact guitar tone that I love. Plenty of bite but bottom end is there.
Hmmmm between one of these or an sg junior actually....I do always think the thin satin finish helps with resonance. At least it does in my simple mind HAHA! Given you have both which do you prefer?
I rarely ever play my Tribute, to be honest. I always forget that I actually own it. I own 53 guitars, though. So to be fair I’m sure I forget that I own quite a few of them hahaha! Cheers -Ryan
Nice upgrades. Questions: Does this 2019 SG model have the PCB board in the control cavity, or all the electronics traditional hand wiring? Did you have to replace the pickguard once you put the pick covers on? I found sometimes when you add pickup covers to pickups, the pickguard doesn't fit over them anymore? thx
I got mine to fit too. I had to remove the extra washers by opening the back switch plate cover. Remove the switch cap first before backing out the switch to make it easier to push it back through. Then remove the extra washers that compensate the thickness of missing poker chip. Then put everything back and the poker chip will fit.
Just look for Gibson Gear Neck and Bridge Humbucker Pickup Covers. You could try other brands… but the Gibson Gear ones will fit properly for sure. Congrats on the new SG! Cheers -Ryan
Those are the spacing measurements. I'd recommend getting the Gibson Gear ones as others might have the spacing off by a little and they might not fit properly. Cheers -Ryan
Les Trems are interesting… I think I’m over Locking Tuners now… but Witch Hat Knobs!!!! YEAH!!! I have to grab some with gold inserts for my Les Paul Classic P90! Cheers -Ryan
I wouldn’t change anything about it. I like my “nice” guitars stock. I will fiddle with cheaper guitars, but Gibsons already have nice stuff. Also if you ever want to sell it, collectors want original.
"Collectors" will generally forgive and appreciate Pickup Covers, though. Especially on Tribute models... they aren't as "Collectable" as many others. The only changes I make to any Higher End Gibson is limited to Knobs and Pointers. But I can tell you I have passed up on quite a few Les Pauls and SGs because the owner installed EMGs or JB/59. Cheers -Ryan
I really hope that you can overcome your fears in life... once you get out of your parents basement you’ll have the opportunity to see that life is tough and there are bigger problems to address than “fingerprints”. Cheers -Ryan

No, you didn’t talk too much and your playing was kickass. The video was just about perfect 👍🏼

Whatever makes your guitar suit your taste... is worth it. Nice SG!
I would highly recommend you to get a new handmade bone nut , 95% of my tuning stability problems disappeared after I trashed that stock nut

I resolved the problem of the poker chip with a deep round toogle nut.
Very easy and economic

Witch hat knobs would be stellar on that... and oh, if you're feeling fancy add a maestro vibrola ;)

The first upgrade I do on any Gibson is Grover locking tuners
I threw a set of Grover Rotogrips with Keystone Buttons on my Gibson Les Paul Custom... great tuners! Cheers -Ryan

Yessir… stock pickups. Just popped covers on them! Cheers -Ryan
What would I do to this Guitar.....??? Definitely PLAY IT! AMP after AMP.
I just ordered one. I plan on the nickel covers and poker chip also. Did you change out the knobs? I'm doing that also. Great video!

@@Crypticmaskguitar sounds like a resounding vote for the SG Junior to me! Ha! Love the videos man...

The poker chip issue is so annoying. I do love the guitar ...especially with a bone nut!

PCB, rather than Hand Wired. Pickguard is the original, didn't run in to any issues. Cheers -Ryan
i managed to get my toggle switch to work with the poker chip.
How?🙏

where did you take the pickup cover, switch and knobs? thanks
Where did I buy them? The covers were Gibson Branded and the Knobs and Switch were just off of Amazon. Cheers -Ryan
Witch-hats, les trem, locking gotohs

Candle wax? really? that how they do it? damn..
You dont have to do any upgrades to this Sg
Fingerprints on the chrome covers kinda make me cringe and go nah …
