I’ve had mine for a year now and love this guitar! The poker chip won’t fit, aside from that I have no complaints. I haven’t changed a thing on it and I don’t plan to. I can see this guitar becoming a favorite among players.
As someone who prefers a binding-less neck, regular dot inlays, and a satin neck I went with this one and have slowly upgraded the pickups and all the wiring. nitro satin finish, rosewood board, nice case, and USA made used for about $800 to me is a great deal. You can still get a used epiphone SG for like $400 which is a ridiculously good deal but this one was my preference and I have been more than happy with it.
@@socialmeaslesinpartnership1252 I did take wood shop and home economics, but that doesn't mean i don't eat out when its convenient. Same with what i suggested its more convenient for me if Gibson just adds a few extra commands on the CNC machine and just route for P90's.
This is basically what Gibson sold as the SG Special Faded back in the 2010's, for half the price. Now, with the price doubled, about all they did was change the wood of the neck and remove the toggle switch plate. I know inflation is a thing and all that.. But I can't be the only one who finds the price doubling a bit outrageous. Luckily I got my Special Faded in 2011...
@@RubbelisPro Yup! I totally understand, haha. I plan on buying a 2nd SG faded second hand but even those prices have gone way up. There's no "budget friendly" Gibsons left. The SG Faded - 15 years ago - was the last of its kind.
Prices have doubled since 15 years ago for all guitar companies. A Reverend Sensei Jr. was $529 that year and made in Korea. Today they’re $899 and made in Indonesia. The Gibsons are all Made in USA and American labor is *over* twice as expensive today.
I agree , this Guitar is Gibsons best deal . . Based on your review and after much research on my own i did buy this exact guitar from your link. I just received it this afternoon and i love the tone. The neck will take some time to get use to as it is bigger than my Fender strat and Martin D 16. Thanks for your review.
I would also add zZounds made it easy to purchase along with a perfect set up. They even sent a picture of the guitar on the bench while the tech went through the set up checklist. Great partner of yours.
I’ve owned the equivalent of this guitar- main diff mahogany neck. Great guitars, and it’s amazing that a guitar that is so feather light can pack so much punch. The 490r is an uncommonly useful neck pickup, however I wish the 498t was the bridge pickup.
Great demo and playing as usual, but I just don’t understand why Gibson insists on continuing to use the 490T pickup. The 57 Classic Plus and 498T are both waaay better. The 490R is a good pickup, but the 490T has always sounded rather bland to my ears whenever I hear it or play a guitar with it.
Agreed, I have one of these in Walnut, great instrument but the bridge pup is the weakest part of it. the R is fine in the neck, but I mainly use the bridge and it's not as punchy as the filtertrons in my Gretsch twinjet. I'm thinking of putting some BK pups into it.
The SG Tributes definitely have a chunkier neck than the SG Standard. I've owned both here, I kinda like the Standard's profile a bit better but that's just personal preference.
I saw one of these walnut finished Tributes in a shop recently, and they’re SO pretty. I got a Standard a couple of weeks ago and before that I would have said I preferred the small guard, but the batwing has really struck me. It’s more resonant than the Special I had before, and I wonder if the batwing has something to do with that. But the big pickguard is a stunner in person.
I've always regretted not getting an SG Tribute back in the day when they were $550 used. It won't be long before you can't buy any used Gibson for under a grand. That said, I think $1,299 is a great price.
I got an SG Tribute for £550.00 new. Maybe 2018. It's a f*cking animal. Mahogany neck, slim 60s 24 fret. B/Buckers 1 & 2. Chocolate, the finish looks like the school hall floor. I really cannot understand why Gibson can't just churn these out and keep the price as low as possible. All this "messing around" and chopping-and-changing defeats the object of doing really good Gibson Americana at a sensible price. It's a stonking good guitar. They're obviously absolutely nuts in the Gibson boardroom.
Very good value for a Gipson but I think I'd lean towards the Epiphone 1961 Les Paul SG Standard. With the Burstbucker pickups, upgraded switches, pots and electronics and bounded neck.
Agree to disagree. I tried this one as well as an Epiphone 1961 Les Paul SG standard and bought the Epi. Everything felt better on the Epiphone, even though it was fairly less expensive. It was an easy choice because I care more about the sound and playability than the name on the headstock. So maybe a good value but certainly not the BEST value.
@@joey-zr8ltEpiphone is amazing. Especially for the price and being an import company. But Gibson is better definitely. I own both Gibson and Epiphone SG’s and LP’s. And the Gibsons are better. It's my fourth SG. I DONT HAVE THE OTHER THREE!

I wish Gibson would route the body for P90s as well, the large guard would cover the cavity and Gibson could offer a pre cut P90 pick guard as well.
tbh it isn't actually that hard to do, like you said the large guard would hide the routes
