    Part of the Irony you talked about: Germany delivered some MG3s to Ukranians. Some of those MG 3s still have the Old MG42 Receivers which still have the old markings. For example 1942 and a swastika. The Bundeswehr did actually often just cross out the Swastika and not completely remove it. So in theory a Ukranian can be using the exact MG that might have been used against his Grandfather 80 years earlier by the Germans. And even more ironic: In case of the battle of Kharkiv, it might even be on the same battleground as in WW2. Which just amazes me.

    The Maxim was the secret weapon of the British Empire in their colonial wars, that's how old it is. They liked the people at home to think the wars were being fought by noble riflemen, but that was just to hide the brutal, one-sidedness of the conflicts due to the Maxim. A saying took up among the imperial ranks: 'Whatever happens we have got the Maxim gun and they have not.'

  • @aivarasdarulis
    @aivarasdarulis ปีที่แล้ว +99

    Interesting fact: The MG3/MG42 is most likely Zastava version built in the 50's Yugoslavia - some ex Yugoslavian countries (I believe Croatia but might be wrong) sent few dozens of these things to Ukrainians. MG3's are sadly only now reaching Ukraine from Germany as for the longest time they did not send those for whatever reason.

    • @RinoGato
      @RinoGato ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Simplified - Germany has established some rules since WW2 happened. Weapons are only to be send to members of the alliances Germany is part of (NATO&EU), some 3rd party countries, and to not send weapons to countries that are involved in a conflict (doesn't matter if it's a defensive or offensive war). However, the last part is based on individual cases, or to put it in the words of german politicians: "There can only be exceptions in justified individual cases, which must be documented in a publicly comprehensible manner." Also, german politicians hoped that the conflict could be resolved diplomatically, because they really don't want to cut all ties to Russia, and sending weapons to a country that is in open conflict with Russia is pretty much cutting a lot of ties with Russia. Maybe that helps you understand why Germany is rather precautious with sending weapons or equipment to Ukraine.

    I think the Maxim is actually a really good choice for a mounted gun. I once heard about an old British armory that had to clear out it's old stock of .303 ammo, so they put all of it through the Vickers machine gun that was also in the armory. They fired over 3 million rounds of ammo continuously over the course of several days, and when they took the gun apart to clean it there was hardly any wear on the internals. Those old machine guns are literally designed for continuous fire.

    The Maxim machine gun was expressly designed by Mr. Maxim to be adaptable to just about any cartridge and caliber the Europeans could come up with. The first ones produced were in .303 British which used the came caliber bullet (bullet diameter) as the ones produced for the Russians, as well as a rimmed cartridge. Hearsay applies to it's original design, as according to how the story goes, Maxim was reportedly following the advice of a friend who essentially said that to make any money he should make something that allows these Europeans to kill each other more efficiently... Of course at this point since whether something like this was actually said is difficult to prove historically.

As seen with smooth brains that can't grasp the notion of ambushing a helicopter dropping off soldiers or a column of trucks or even marching infantry using shotguns or bolt action rifles or muzzle loading muskets or bows and arrows. Until people accept the full spectrum of war as being all inclusive rather than exclusive and extremely limited, we'll still have to listen to fools who believe charging in a direct attack is the only war to fight in a war and thus 'muh jets, muh nooks, muh unpossible to resist gobermen, now plz gib all guns'.

There were improvements but when used at the same scenario as was intended modern weapons are going to be better but not by such a huge margin as cartridge, repeaters and self-loaders made over cap&balls. In CQB you might have the most tacticool MP5 ever - if the other guy has working PPSH-41 you'd fight for your life as he had the same MP as you do.

    Well, I'm not really surprised to see the Maxim - after all, its brother, the Vickers HMG, was in use until the 1990s or so. These guns have just one real shortcoming - they're darn heavy (frankly, the Maxim on its standard infantry mount weighs more than modern large-caliber HMGs do). But when they're mounted on vehicles or used for purely defensive purposes that becomes largely irrelevant, so... why not?

      Ideally the MGs with a cooling jacket are oil-filled as it has a much higher boiling point than water. Eventually though the oil is lost through leaks and such so it's replaced with water. Once the water boils off it's easier to find for replacement, although there are accounts of soldiers using their own urine to fill the jackets when water became hard to get, either due to general lack of water or the pressing need to refill the jacket in combat without a handy water supply. Much like mortar teams urinating on their tubes to cool them when over-heating in combat.

But suddenly we found out that PKs are not ready for real firefights. Overheeting problem was the biggest issue. So we just pulled out some good-ol' Maxims from the storages. About 300 thousands of them were manufactured so I think some post-soviet countries still have a bunch of them in storages as a Doomsday Weapon.

Most mosins are worn out, and that squad of guys with ARs and AKs are going to be able to put a lot more lead down range and on target a lot quicker than Ivan with a relic ever could.
      The DPR and LNR troops aren't using Mosins because they're fit for purpose, they're using them because both forces are critically under supplied and the Russians use them as fodder. If the Mosin did actually offer significant advantages over the AK and ARs, the Russian troops would be using them, but they aren't because they don't need to.

      @@iannordin5250 You've missed my point- the AK is an assault rifle, intended for close-in fighting. The Mosin is a 1,000-yard battle rifle. NOBODY trains their troops in marksmanship at long range anymore. It's pretty much entirely spray and pray. "Most Mosins are worn out" because they were USED, not because they're old. It's an attribute, not a criticism. Have you missed the eternal search for a flatter shooting round, for war and also hunting? The mid-range trajectory of a black powder 45-70 round at 500 yards is 30 FEET, the 7.62x54 is 10 feet. The whole push in military rifles 1885-1910 was for faster, smaller, flatter-shooting rounds. The U.S. Lee rifle in the 1890s fired a 6mm round. I never claimed an issue Mosin is necessarily an Olympic- capable rifle. I personally don't know which arsenals put out the best Mosins, Whether Tula, the Finns, whomever, but I'll put whichever it is against an AK47 or 74 any day. I fired an AK 74 in Afghanistan and it's okay, but going up against a Mosin with it? Not this old soldier.

    As a former tankman on T-55, PKT can be fired without what you call 'selenoid', that is to say without the electro-magnetic trigger. Both the coaxial machine gun in the tank (which is what the PKT is mean to be, T standing for 'tankovoi', i e 'of the tank' or 'for a tank') and the main gun have alternative ways of being fired if there's no electic power in the tank. (The same, btw, goes for turning the turet without the electic stabilizer and turnking the motor on without a starter: there's a back-up system for everything.) The way it is done in theory is this: the gunner (who sees the target through the sights) gives a command to the loader who presses a button on the PKT itself. This button is actually a trigger although it may not seem like one. I say 'in theory' because it can only work if the motor is not running, otherwise the loader will have hard time hearing the gunner.
    If the electric system is powered, the PKT is fired by the gunner pressing the left button on the joystik-like handle with which he aims the PKT along with the main gun.
    In other words, it should not be that hard to convert a PKT to a hand-held PK. If it is hard in practice in a shop that is not designed to manufacture guns, I don't know.

    You are very wrong for the reasons why the Chechen’s have “cooler” small arms. First, they are incorporated in Rossguard from the private army of Khadyrov ( the president of the Chechen republic ) but they still have their own budget and they are at liberty to purchase what they want from the small arms like special forces unlike average infantry man who gets what the army issues. The “Chechen” forces are not given anything heavier than MRAP fire power wise for political reasons since they can “rebel” over the loose money driven control of their Chechen leader. Also, Chechens like new expensive items as token of their pride being respected, that’s primarily why they have these nice looking guns.

    There are also few misconceptions (since you are offended by the term 'propaganda' ):
    - ukrainians are converting tank MGs since 2014. This doesn't have anything to do with 'russian tanks'. Ukraine had WW3-sized amount of soviet tanks since the collapse of Soviet Union. Many of them just rusted under the sun, those which survived were very badly serviced and were abandoned at first attempt of using them in battle. That it why they have excessive amount of spare tank MGs without tanks to use them on
    - this chechen fighter have good gear because he is a member of elite spetsnaz unit, not because he is chechen. There are media of other unit from Chechnya storming Mariupol, who are just police officers with combat experience, and they have standard army gear, maybe even worse. As for Zenitco, I am not aware of any government contracts with them, there is a very high chance this dude pimped his gun with his own money.

    Well, the Maxim still works just fine - seriously, most of the weapons of the "great War" (WW1) would still work ok today! Sure, they aren't fancy and don't use polymers etc. - but you can't argue with the firepower a belt-fed water-cooled MG can provide...hell, something like the M2 is still being used and that designed during WW1, just like 1911 pistols (most modern handguns are based on that, just double stacked magazine added, different caliber and rails for lights etc.)...hell, the British performed an endurance test on a watercooled MG (don't remember if it was a Maxim) before retiring them and they fired that thing for several days non-stop (replacing the barrels when they were worn out and revilling the water-jacket when needed)! They had to shovel away the empty casings and even after all that? The gun worked just fine!

    • @Talishar
      @Talishar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Of course if you swap the barrels out on the MG it'll keep singing. That's the failure point of all MGs. Most modern MGs will keep singing too if you keep the barrels swapped out and load the ammo properly. Nearly every stoppage I had on my MGs have been from improperly loaded ammo in the belt getting jammed up in the belt itself. Especially when a lot of modern mounted MGs use a sleeve over the portion of the belt nearest the breech to help keep debris from getting picked up by the belt and dragged into the action. If you don't fully seat a round properly in the belt and the round is sitting a little forward than it should be on the link, it'll get caught in the sleeve and jam.

      Every army in the world stopped using water cooled machine guns for a reason. The Maxim and Vickers were great guns when they were first introduced, but at the time, military doctrine deployed machine guns in batteries like artillery pieces. By 1917, though, the writing was on the wall and everybody knew that mobility of firepower was going to be a huge tactical advantage. Having firepower is great. Being able to quickly redeploy it wherever it was needed or carrying it with you and using it during the assault phase was a big game changer. The British 1937 pattern web equipment had no cartridge pouches for rifle chargers, it had two magazine pouches for the Bren gun because the entire section carried Bren magazines in their webbing, while their rifle chargers were just slung in Mk.3/1 cloth bandoliers. The entire infantry section was organized around the Bren, while the Vickers had been relegated mostly to static supporting fire, aircraft and naval roles. When belt fed, air cooled guns with detachable ammo boxes and spare barrels came about, there was really no reason to use a water cooled MG other than simply not having anything else.

    • @ktgiffin8147
      @ktgiffin8147 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@deathlis Yeah, the 1911 is a little iffy. I'd take it over having no pistol, but it definitely wouldn't be my first choice. Between the single stack magazines, SAO design, two manual safety systems and unnecessary mechanical complexity, it's really not a great choice. John Browning himself recognized the shortcomings of his design and corrected most of them when he invented the Hi Power. Personally, I think the only reason the USMC bought 12 000 of them in 2014 is because someone had a 1911 fetish.
