Traditionally, Xhosamen (term has nothing to do with gender) are given the names of their grandfathers as surnames. Although we all share a clan name, my great-grandfather has a different surname from my grandfather, and my grandfather's different from my father's. I however, share mine with my father because he wanted to westernize the family structure.
I did not believe the story of spending 10 days without a name, not in black people families. It's very rare. I feel like everyone wants to be smart these days, come across as a chosen person. This guy went on to say his mother and father were the first black medical physicians in South Africa, I did not believe that either. We really don't need to fabricate our backgrounds in order for people to listen to us. But I agreed with him when it comes to names, the meaning behind our names and how our names affect us
If you have a clan and a tribe you will know that there are things your clan and tribe does that other people don’t do. Do take it personal do your own research into your own clan.
True surnames were imposed on us by colonial system,we used clan names to classify ourselves prior surnames.
