      I am “ only” 62 so I was a bit late but had a relative 6 years my senior. He was more like a brother than an uncle. Turned me on to all kinds of 60’s “stuff “ very early. About 15 years ago i stopped at our local greasy spoon and there sat John Kay in the flesh and as outnof pocket as one would ever imagine in the hyper rural , extremely clannish , Hillsboro TN. Spoke briefly and was on my way. Very cordial and approachable cat.

    This was the first rock band I ever became familiar with as a boy and now in my 60's they are my favorite still. John Kay is an amazing man. I listen to how intelligent and articulate he is way back then and he came to North America as a refugee from Germany where he and his mom escape from the Iron Curtain. He also had to live with poor eyesight from an early age. The man is a real hero to me.

    Saw this line up at my first concert in Feb 1971. Zephyr opened (they still had Tommy Bolin on guitar, before he left to record with Billy Cobham & later replace Dominic Troiano, who had replaced Joe Walsh in James Gang).I was 14 years old. Still the best concert I've ever been to, & still the loudest concert I've ever been to. (I've seen some of the best, my last was the great BB King in 1989 or 90 Had to go see the MAN). THey were absolutely great.They were a tour de force. Can anyone name a song that had the impact Born To Be Wild had? When I heard that song in 1968, I forgot about Beatles, Stones, & all the other music of that day. It was absolutely amazing hearing that tune. John Kay's voice was amazing. The song literally changed my entire musical outlook. I owned every album they released.I was heartbroken when they broke up. Bought both of John's solo albums, which still sound fabulous today. I was overjoyed when an FM station in my hometown played the entire Slow Flux album one night around 2AM. I called the station knowing it was Steppenwolf. The DJ answered YELLING "It's Steppenwolf, It's Steppenwolf,It's Steppenwolf" & hung up the phone. To me they are my all time favorite group, John Kay is the greatest singer ever. He's a great songwriter as well.Totally one of a kind.Love those guys.

    George Biondo on bass just rips it up here. Too many rock fans thinks the great bass players didn't arrive on the scene until later. Here's the prototype.

    John Kay and Steppenwolf are under appreciated for sure. John, at this writing, is 77 years old and performs solo blues slide guitar and vocals. He can still fit into those killer black leather trousers and his voice, musicianship, song writing and stage presence is top notch. The man has swag and depth that few possess. His life story is also inspirational.

      I've been a huge fan of Steppenwolf since '67.....high school. John Kay's story is about as inspirational as they get. He was just 4 yrs old when his mother smuggled them out of east Germany and through Austria to freedom and they really made the most of it. Steppenwolf is one of my favorite bands all time. Monster, Don't Step on the Grass Sam, Sookie, Sookie, and of course Renegade. Badass.

    Hippo Stomp, from the album Steppenwolf 7. I bought that album when it was first released. I had already been a Steppenwolf fan at that time. They had solidified themselves with their "Big Three": Born to be Wild, Magic Carpet Ride, and The Pusher. What so many people never realized that the band had an enormous catalog of music behind those three songs. Music that, in my opinion, far outshines the Big Three. I believe that no matter which version of the band there was, Steppenwolf 7 was the best album they EVER produced.

    • @cedarwaxwing3509

      As far as talent goes, I don’t think you can beat this version of Steppenwolf. Guitarist Larry Byrom had been with them since “Monster” and George Biondo (on his first album) was the best bassist they had found so far (Nick St Nicholas was an interesting character, but not much of a musician). Although it lacked the hits, “Seven” is musically the most mature album they put out. Songs like this one, “Snow-blind Friend,” “Foggy Mental Breakdown,” and “Renegade” are at the top of the group’s creativity. Question: can anyone identify the brand or model of bass that Biondo is playing? I can’t.

      True but I saw the so called president of the organization, actually say with a straight face, theatRobert Plant, among others, was copying Janis Joplin. I was stunned. Janis was actually copying Garnett Mimms who sang Cry Baby several years before Janis recorded it.(Don't get me wrong, I'ma huge Janis fan) but it seems with people who have their history mixed up (whether by accident or on purpose) calling the shots, it doesn't suprise me a bit. Born To Be Wild alone makes them worthy of induction, IMO.That single song changed my entire outlook on music. Steppenwolf were unique, John Kay IMO is the best singer of his genre. Even though they sold millions of albums, they're not worthy of induction? Of course DeepPurple weren't inducted until very recently. There are artists, groups in the HOF that never had the impact Steppenwolf did.

    I can’t believe that the editor showed John Kay instead of Larry Byrom during most of his guitar solo. What a great guitarist. George Biondo was a great addition to the band adding a good singer to help out with vocals along with his strong bass playing. My favorite band growing up since I was 12 or so. For one band to have Michael Monarch as lead guitar, then Larry Byrom is amazing.

Absolutely blew my mind, of course some Acapulco gold helped a bit, but they did a fantastic show and the tickets were $9.50 each which included admission and ride all night. Steppenwolf towers above this so called R&R Hall thang, to those untuned, time & time proves this. The RRHOF petitions for Steppenwolf to accept THEIR meager, belittling request for membership, they have not the ability, qualities to attract the wolf. Steppenwolf game has very little to gain from induction anywhere, the band has blazed their own path, in complete unique performance.

    I Miss the days when musicians were thoughtful and passionate about their Art, and talked about serious things in their songs. Activistic, not narcissistic.

    • @Kayodleman
      @Kayodleman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, but the band was based in El Lay, so some sound stage in town. Coulda been a game show set re-decorated. They let people in off the street for this kind of stuff which sorta explains the crowd.

    Steppenwolf could be wrote a bit different. Steppenflow has a smart different attitude to their original. Fun to see it just once on a LP vinal record cover, bummer my idea is too late. 9-21-2020, should have done this 1977.

      Some studio in Los Angeles, and I believe the audience was invited in for free for a show that "Faberge" was doing about "album of the week" or something like that.

    • @ronball7356

      That's how promos were done back then Steve. Remember, it was almost 50 years ago. No internet, a few VCR type machines. Very few. The law only allowed one owner to own no more than 5 or 6 FM stations. It was a big deal to have a record promoter come to a station, show the mini concert and buy everyone lunch.

    • @AmIonArock
      @AmIonArock 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That was a good law!
      Its very hard for me to listen any radio station now . They don't care about content they play. "After the commercial break, Steppenwolf up next". They only play two SteppenWolf songs so you know Its either going to be Magic Carpet Ride or Born to be Wild. Both Classic Songs and hope they still get royalties paid to them for. This song HIPPO STOMP or Renegade, still waiting to hear that on the radio.
