  • Summer is almost here, so it won't be long before we start seeing spotted lanternflies. Ross DiMattei spoke with local researchers on what we can expect this summer.

    It's crazy to me that, after 10 years, their solution to address one disastrous species is with another potentially disastrous species.

      They're specialists for a reason.. these wasps all are weirdly specific and focus certain hosts.. like tarantula hawks.. hence their name

    I think scientist should raise birds and teach them to specifically go after the lanternfly. Birds would do a hell of a job at keeping the lanternfly numbers in check and possibly wipe them out in some areas.

      @gardeningjunkie2267 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the time the birds discover them, and they do eat them, most of the damage is already done. Sooty mold can quickly take over a garden destroying plant after plant, all caused by the insects in the tiny nymph stage before birds will find them.

  • @robertmercadoworld

    And will we need to bring another species for the wasps?

    • @TheModerateMillenial
      @TheModerateMillenial ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No because of their life cycle. These parasitoids are solitary wasps, not colony formers like yellow jackets or hornets. As adults they live alone and feed on pollen and nectar as adults. They control pests during the juvenile part of their lifecycle. They lay their eggs in this case the one lays it’s eggs on the eggs of the lantern flies where it hatches and eats the eggs. The one that attacks “adolescents” (nymphal stage) lays its eggs inside the individual with its ovipositor and the eggs a hatch and eat it from the inside.
      Like the video says the problem is that they might decide to lay their eggs on a native, non-pest insect.
      Biocontrol is our best bet for a lot of things if we can find specialists. I’m so intrigued by the biocontrol for Japanese knotweed. What a vicious plant

      @@TheModerateMillenialRight, because that worked out so well in AU with the Cane Toads. It's tantamount to solving a house fire with gasoline. 🤦‍♂️

    • @TheModerateMillenial
      @TheModerateMillenial ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NinjaRunningWild toads are a generalist. That was a stupid idea.
      These controls they are testing are specialists that evolved with the lantern fly. There have been plenty of successful biocontrol since the cane toad. And the testing here in North America is very rigorous and takes place successfully with cooperation from USA and Canada.

    seems like we need to encourage birds to feed on them

    • @TheModerateMillenial
      @TheModerateMillenial ปีที่แล้ว

      They have done studies to try and encourage birds to eat them and they will as long as they haven’t eaten on their preferred host: the tree of heaven. If they have fed on the tree of heaven they take in the plant photochemicals and don’t taste good so birds won’t eat them. And birds like a dog have a Pavlovian response and they eat it once or twice and doesn’t taste good they will never eat it again.
      To help combat that, removing tree of heaven will help prevent them from tasting nasty to birds. 😊

    We were infested with them in past years in NJ on trees near our house. This year there is nothing. I saw a bunch of nymphs a few miles north of my house at a park months ago, but I’ve only seen one nymph and one adult today, but they were both dead, like they just died naturally. I haven’t seen a living one near me this year like they can’t thrive. It’s quite strange.

      People are likely applying a systemic in your immediate area, something like Merit which unfortunately will also kill honeybees if applied on flowering plants. Used on the right plant, it really can control invasive insects.

    I think the real question is when the lanternfly season isn’t in effect what do these newly introduced predators eat during that time? Maybe finding another invasive bug species that it can eat during that time would be smart.

      Ok, I found this few days ago, still experimenting but it looks like it will work, so far it’s few hours since I put my mixture outside and few lanterns drowned in it! Waiting for more!
      Mix 3 cups of water with 3 cups of pine-sol (any amount equally) and 1 cup of sugar. Leave it near the place you spotted the lanterns. Hopefully it will help.
