  • There are many controversial recommendations circulating about lymphedema risk after breast cancer surgery, such as a mastectomy or lumpectomy. What causes lymphedema after breast cancer surgery?     Hi. My question #1 -can get in a sauna if lymph nodes have been renewed? #2 - why can we not use a heating pad (ie causing swelling in the area)?

    One more question - if you haven’t had an issue after surgery for over 5 years are you considered safe/clear from every developing lymphedema?

      If lymph nodes were removed, the risk exists even years after surgery. I've met patients who had had their surgery more than 10 years ago, thought they were "safe" now, did the things they weren't supposed to (like carrying heavy stuff) and developed serious lymphedema.
