- Over the past year I've experimented with different ways to carry spare fuel on my Himalayan. Here, I walk you through a few possible solutions I've come up with depending on just what volume of spare fuel I think I'll need for any given adventure.

Thanks for the video and ideas. I'd have to say that of the options you present - the metal 1 liter, and SW Motec are you best options providing you carry them in either the Tooltubes or externally. Gas expands and evaporates within the containers causing pressure to build up on hot days. And when you combine that with the fact that even if it's a cold day, if you have a container of gas inside your tank rack bags or side panniers it will get hot inside and inevitably push out small amounts of fuel into the inside of those carrying containers making them unusable for putting things like food or clothing into again in the future. Gasoline permiates into everything. I don't care how well you wash them out, they will still smell of gasoline. Keep gasoling outside of any pannier or carrying bags!!!! You will thank me for it. I'd never put a fuel canister of any type inside paniers or things that have camping stuff or especially clothes. Gas canisters do leak and filling them sometimes gets gas on the outsides of them so they do smell of gas.
The tube types sound good but Id never place them horizontally again because of chances of leaking so I'd place them upright to reduce the chance of leaks.
On Amaon there are also 2 and 3 gallon src moto gas canisters that are slimmer than the fat one you have here. Good for off grid and touring in countries that may have bad gas or fewer gas stations.
Ok, since i was raised on a farm and sometimes we had lean years we had to use what we had on hand. For fuel use 2 liter coke bottles. Keep a funnel to pour into the tank. To fill the coke bottles keep a length of fuel line to siphon from the gas tank to the bottles and then top off fuel tank. To carry said bottles i wrap them with gorilla tape and they go into bike luggage or make carry tubes to mount on bike just like tool tubes. Coming from a frugal background is both a curse and a blessing. It just seems that traveling by motorcycle has become more of a fashion show then anything else. Have doubts about the two liter bottles? Fill one about 3/4 full and throw it in backyard for a couple day or a week. Better yet throw it in back of a pickup. We would use them for premixed gas when we would get firewood. They are pretty durable. Just remember its for tranporting gas not for storing gas

Really like all the options. But like you the tool tube and canister is my favorite option. Especially for bikes without proper fuel gages. Ie low gas warning light. Yamaha xt 250. Great bike but no fuel gage. So thank you so much for sharing all the options. ❤

I keep a rag in the cap of the tool tubes when I have an MSR bottle in them. For 500 mile runs I run a 2.5 gallon fuel cell on the rear rack. I ride 250 miles and fill up. That gets me to camp. I don't refill the fuel cell till I start the return trip.

I carry 2 5L Long haul Roto Pax type jugs setting on my rear foot pegs for traveling very remote SE Oregon on my Himalayan and soft panniers up front.
Love that part of Oregon. A buddy and I are thinking of riding there to do some camping. Any suggestions for spots?

The one problem I can't seem to find a good answer for - Filling / Refilling those small bottles at the pump - I don't have space to drag around a big funnel, the pump nozzle will not fit an MSR type bottle since the opening is WAY too small. Filling them from a typical plastic fuel can is easy - but I'm on the road - I'm not carrying that either.
Will the standard Pump nozzle fit that SW-Moto bottle? How would you refill an MSR while on the road?
Yep...this is a legitimate issue. I have found that I can fill the MSR bottle right from the pump nozzle, if you a use a very light squeeze on the pump. Inevitably I end up spilling a little, but I've gotten pretty good at it. The 2L SW moto bottle does have a wider mouth and is easier to fill, but will still flow over if you pump too fast. It's all about that very delicate squeeze.
@@On2Feet I have a folding Silicon funnel, but Silicon is not the ideal choice - it will eventually absorb some of the fuel. I might look at tapping the fuel line and putting a valve with a enough line to fill the bottle from the tank. Excellent flow control.

I really really love those tool tubes! 2 questions:
1. Would a pillion be hampered by them when sitting?
2. Would it be possible to mount them right bellow where you did (so on the right side closer to the exhaust) there by surely not affecting the pillion and also lowering the center of gravity slightly?
I never ride with a pillion, so it's hard to say if they'd get in the way. I suspect they might a bit with the way I have them mounted. The nice thing about the universal kits though is that you can basically mount them anywhere. I think I tried to mount them behind the mounting racks at one point and it didn't work well.

How many CC is that Himalayan? And how far can you go on a full tank?
411cc....and range is entirely contingent on the type of riding. All highway, my fuel-range test was about 210 miles total to empty. But on slower back roads, I can get over 250 miles on a tank.
