I love to hear about what gear other photographers use for certain applications, can’t wait to see what great shots you get with your setup! Really nice 300mm lens.
I’ll be shooting tomorrow at your favorite college, Tarleton State in Stephenville, Texas. Game time temperature forecast to be in the low 100s and I thought they would flex this game from 2:30 PM till later, but that hasn’t happened. You know me, normally I would take my 400 but due to the extreme heat waves coming off of that turf field, I also am going with the 300 and the 1.4 tele converter on my Sony A9 III. Second and third bodies will be my other Sony A9 III with the 70 to 200, and an A1 with the 20 to 70 G. Would love to see you do a video about heat waves on turf fields and how to be properly set up to combat those!
@@PMRTVthe gear worked great! For the cameraman, it’s definitely an adjustment not being able to zoom in and out as well as body placement. I need practice… and new knees. 😂
Don’t shoot football anymore, I moved on from that 25 years ago, but find this video fun to watch. I will be buying the 300mm GM though but plan to use it on one of my A1’s. Never considered using my 24-50/2.8 G on the other A1 since I bought it for my A7CR and A7C2 but maybe give it a try. Thank you and have a great season. Take care.
Shot my first HS game of the season myself last night and first home ncaa soccer the night before that.. Can’t wait to add the 300 GM to my kit.. a 70-200 GM II in crop mode on my a1 and a7R V gets me by, but the 300 2.8 naturally and 450 f4 in crop is what I’m needing stat. Hope you’re well Peter!
The 300mm f2.8 could be a game changer. I loved my Nikon version but at the time was a bit heavy but was ideal for the motorsport I shot at the time. using a D4s. With an A1, it will give so much flexibility with potential to crop but keeping it super lightweight.
Always interesting to see what others use - I used my a9iii with the 300GM and a1 with 70-200GMII this past Friday. As I watched my card fill up quickly early, I realized I had to change from 120fps (was set bc shooting small birds in flight earlier) and that worked out. At halftime, I switched the combo and put the 300GM on the a1. Enjoyed using both combos. I use Peak Design slides with shorter lenses and have black rapid for the 400 - but thinking of getting black rapid double - have you used that one?
I brought both the 300 and 400 f2.8 last night for hs football. I'm thinking I can get away with just the 300. I had just gotten so comfortable shooting with the 400, but really liking the 300 for the sideline
Thx Patrick! Curious why you wouldn’t use the A1 with the 300 2.8 to give you more reach via crop and use A93 with 24-50 as you mentioned you would use when action was close.
because the A9III will mop the floor vs. the A1. A9III is far superior vs. A1 for speed and accuracy of AF and the A1 is dang good as we all know. The A9III is most often going to be on my longest lens for whatever I'm shooting (except basketball). also, the A1 is more handy if I need to crop in on an image I shoot at 50mm (50mp down to 21mp with punch in).
Do you offer 1:1 courses? I basically taught myself with a cheap Nikon d3400 I bought at target for my sons youth football games. My skills improved enough that I became the Naples Gators youth football organization offical action photographer. Fast forward 8 years later Im shooting my sons HS varsity team and Football University (FBU). I was gifted the Sony a7iii with a FE 4/70-200 G OSS. I didnt touch the camera for years because I was intimidated. Still I am overwhelmed with all the settings and have limited knowledge. What I am looking for is someone to help me figure out the best settings and what to purchase next. I have the funds to purchase better equipment but not enough to make a mistake.
I do. I charge $150 per hour and we can talk about anything you like. Start here with this video and then maybe we can get on Zoom and have a first session: th-cam.com/video/nYAJ1DwoMOA/w-d-xo.html
Im so obsessed with the 300mm F2.8. It's just the overall package with size, weight, and quality. It's a home run! I have being reading online a few people talking about the a9iii and A1 in regards to price so I am curious your thoughts on for action shots (I live on the North Shore of Oahu currently and winter surfing is coming up) - I understand your point about 20 or 30FPS but just like to get your thoughts on shooting more FPS then that. Do you commonly use it or is 30FPS enough? I would not be shooting every burst in 120FPS if I got the a9iii of course but there are some ultra high level performance riders that come to surf so would I be better off with an A1 or getting the A9iii? I have a variety of options already including the 7Ciii (which I love) but I wanted something a little more powerful than that. I have the reach that I need which includes the 300mm and 400mm F2.8 and also the 200-600mm as well.

That is the exact combo I’m using tonight for our high school football game.
great minds....
Thanks enjoy the game.
I’m shooting my first football game of the year too tonight
I used the exact same set up last night for the very first time. Looking forward to your follow up video on how it went!
Did it work?

PMR - I may have missed it but did you ever get a reply as to why photo mechanic was slow with Heif files? And can they do anything to improve it?
yes, they made some changes and it has improved in beta versions that were short run. To my knowledge they have not rolled it out in an update yet.
If you already have an A1 and wanted a 2nd body, would you get another A1 or the A9iii if you had the choice?
probably another A9III if you shoot sports all the time.

Does the A9III works for video just as good as it does for photography?
Some would say better!
