Top bloke, Mark. I've got a nice story about him.
Cancer has troubled my family for as long as I can remember. My mum used to run a support group, I used to play with kids the same age as me who ended up losing their mums at the support group etc.. and other members of my family have had it.
So when I saw Mark's piece on Football Fpcus in 2009 I got quite upset, when he spoke about his wife and his daughter, I remembered the kids I played with and how hard it'd be on his little girl. I wrote him a letter sending my best wishes and sent it to his restaurant in Bolton and for whatever reason attached my phone number.. I was only 14 at the time but his story touched me.
On New Year's Eve 2009, my Dad shouted through that someone was on the phone for me, and I it was Mark. We spoke for about half an hour, he asked me about school, family, who I supported and whatnot. We spoke about a few decisions he made in the Cup Final 08 which as a Chelsea fan irked me and he talked me through every single one. He thanked me for taking time out to write him, I thanked him for taking his time put to call and I could hear his little girl playing in the background and his wife shouted through. It really made me realise that they are humans and they really are family people like all of us. I'm 28 now, and always tell this story whenever he comes on the telly. So glad to hear he's doing well

Love this mate, nice thing for him to do, but nice that a 14 year old had the empathy to write to a stranger. :-) and you managed to get him to explain his cup final descicions lol
@garyphillips006 with my parents' work with cancer support I'd always had a lot of empathy toward the illness and understanding from a young age, playing with their kids about the same age as me who later lost their mothers... his story resonated with me and I remember him saying people he didnt think that liked him in football were sending him letters so I thought I'd do the sake. Was a lovely response from him

I've got to say that Jon Parkin must have the patience of a saint, I think I may have given him a slap.
How has Fellaini let YOU down? Halsey comes across as the teacher that tries to be cool and thinks everybody is his mate when they are taking the piss out of him as soon as he turns round.
For obvious reasons, referees have to get the big calls right. From his perspective, missing a sending off reflects badly on him, even if it's behind his back. Fellaini has done it on the sly, but it will appear as a player smashes his opponent and got away with it. Halsey has missed a big call and the players misconduct tarnishes the ref's performance for missing the decision. It's a fair shout.

The amount of referees you see on this and other podcasts that try to be absolute lads, pretend they are one of the boys and down my earth working class fellas is weird tbf. I reckon they grew up with no mates.

Great interview. I must say however I don't like the perception of managers calling refs and having relationships like that. We've heard from Mike Dean and now this insight. I think it fuels potential for interference

A referee that cared about the game? That was empathetic to situations going on? I think his personality, yes, was a little more grassroots and that wouldn't be able to fly these days. But he still knew the rules, the semantics on where to stand, the paperwork and job itself. Give him a little more credit.

Managers at all levels speak to referees every week. It’s not unusual.
I can understand that managers and refs communicate but to openly say he’s ‘pals with him’ raises eyebrows. Human nature to favour your mates. Not a great look for an organisation that’s meant to be ‘impartial’.

The episodes with the refs are among the best. Real eye-openers. You grow up watching these people on telly or at the games, and you really know nothing about them at all. That's why i love these podcasts.

Referee ones are good value. Although, the Kevin Lynch one felt a lot more authentic, think a lot of Mark's football stories we're a bit embellished...
And Kevin's weren't? I loved both episodes and Jeff Winters, Kevin told a story about Forest vs Arsenal, said Wenger and Clough were the managers, Clough had retired before Wenger joined Arsenal.

From a fans perspective it feels like we are nothing to the ‘powers that be’, we have gone from fans/supporters to now being customers, we are just literally cash cows!
Even after the pandemic & the subsequent lockdowns & fans not being allowed into games & players & managers stating how much different the game was without us, yet just a few short years later we are back to square one & being overlooked!!
