Kapok Tree Inn Clearwater Florida - Roadside America

The Kapok Tree Inn was a legendary restaurant in Clearwater, Florida that operated from 1957 to 1991.
All that remain today are the kitschy Italian inspired gardens, fountains & statues.
A dwindling piece of roadside America that can still be visited today.

Very nostalgic, I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, in the late 60's early 1970's. My family traveled to Clearwater to visit friends in 1970, and we went to the Kapok Tree Inn. I was almost 10 yrs old, and remember the grandeur and magic of being in this remake of ancient rome, in the flashy, decadent, taste of that time. Parents took home the souvenir "Planters Punch Cocktail Glasses", Would not trade those times for anything, crushed velour, goddess rain lamps, and ultra luxurious american land yacht, automobiles being built through the disco era. Remembered fondly !

My grandparents took my family here in 1979 for dinner. What a grand restaurant it was! I saved the glass you could keep from one of their cocktails. It has their name on it. I just stumbled upon it when cleaning out a cupboard and had to look it up. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
