In my opinion what makes your channel great is how pure it is. No theatrical edits. Just a dude and his sail boat living the chillest life possible. Really makes your viewers connect with you.
Never been on a sailboat... but somehow I am 100% invested after following Sam since his voyage to Hawaii...
I'm the same, and Sam definitely inspired me to get a sailboat. I'm not stable economically right now, but when I am, I plan to take sailing lessons, maybe go to some boat shows here in Florida, then buy my own.
That fish hook at eye level is giving me tremendous anxiety.
I was gonna say something about that 😂
I was going to say the same thing myself!
Sam! Please put that hook somewhere safe where it won't take your eye out! 😜
He will learn
Reese, he is going for pirate style; “One eyed Sam”
Sam‘s reaction to the sealant cement being open and leaking is classic Sam. Making lemonade out of lemons. That’s most of the reason why I watch these videos. Plus the sailing!
I would love to go sailing with him he's just such a down to earth guy
Blue handle tool is an oyster shucker. Works on clams, mussels, and barnacles, oh my!
The blue tool you used to scrape the glue is an oyster knife.🐳
They’re probably designed to be a bit smaller so they stretch and fit over the lip on the window.
Agreed. Having to stretch a little bit would make a form a tighter seal.
But it looks line they just set in the window pane with glue. The glass comes down on the side of it rather than pressing out from the inside of the loop. If they're smaller then they might not have a seal against the perimeter of the window. I speak from zero experience, but this is how I understood it.
There is no lip to stretch them over. They just rest on a shallow groove and are held on with glue.
"Airplane Helicopter" For future reference Sam, it's an Osprey. Have a good journey!
Get some bulk screen from a hardware store. Any leftovers can be used for many other things. Good Luck!
Clever boat projects on a shoe string budget! Great video Sam! Thanks! Welcome back Zoey!
BOAT is looking better everyday.
So good to know I'm not the only one improvising all through my DIY boat projects.
My husband and I took & passed our ASA 101 and 103 just this past month. Your videos are what inspired me to give it a go. We have no boat but we have lots of enthusiasm! If there's anything we can do for you when you hit Boston give us a shout. :)
Did anyone catch Sam grab that window seal with his foot...lol...Sam... God bless you buddy...
Right, or in NC bless your heart sam
@@paulholmes489. Only God can bless somebody Paul...
That's a great name too !!! Like Paul the Apostle...
God bless YOU Paul... in JESUS precious name...HalleluYah JESUS !!! The precious blood of JESUS CHRIST over you Paul...
I have friends who sail, but your knowledge of how to repair is awesome!
Hopefully the new seals do the job. I've also read that the seals they use around refrigerator doors do a pretty good job. At least on hatches. The Pardeys, I think, talked about it in one of their books.
The rub rail above the windows is most commonly called the eye brows and yes a little cleanup and new oil brightens the whole boat.
Thanks Sam always enjoy watching your videos
I think that's an oyster shucker!
You are correct! Although it seems longer than the one I have
for a "fishing tool", yeah. oyster knife.
Dude, We must have passed on the Chesapeake. I'm currently southbound from Anapolis to home in Wilmington, NC. Watch those t-storms. We got worked last week before the hurricane around Deltaville. Fair winds and following seas.
Really like most of your maintenance/repair videos.
Always a pleasure to watch your adventures. Say hello to Zoe for me.
Thanks for this Sam.
If you hit the Cape Cod Canal, I hope I get notified so I can wave as you pass by. Safe travels!
Dave Westner we sailed through the cc canal a few days ago.
@@samholmessailing Right on..hope you got some video. Maybe catch ya on the way back. safe journey!
On Monday this week I went sailing on a 24' O'Day sailboat. First time ever sailing. I'm amazed you sailed to Hawaii on a 23' sailboat.
With my MOM! Love it dude! Fair winds following seas!
Thanks for the video. Just a suggestion, having a fishing lure hanging from you rod, at eye level, may be hazardous to your vision.
Enjoyed the video! Especially the seal replacement and angle to which you cut and glued. Awesome. Great tip
Buggs won’t be nice, but those windows do look nicer without the screens. Cool vid! Your steady, detailed improvements to your boat are inspiring.
It looks really good. 👍👍✌️✌️
Please please please move that hook. :ox love all your videos. You the Man.
Zoey don't be shy we missed you! Sam i hope everything is cool you seemed not as upbeat in this installment. Hey I'm doing port lens and gasket replacement myself as well right now. 30yo Lewmars though.
I literally thought "3d printer" when you mentioned the screens and two seconds later you bring it up as well. If mine was set up id print them out for you. There was a thread on cruiser forums recently about what a 3d printer could be use for on a sailboat. I will be sure to add that to the list. The OP was trying to figure out if itd be worth having one on board.
please cover the fishing lure. it is in eye height. great videos , congrats k
Thanks for the updates Sam! I love your attitude and video styles. Safe trips
Watching your TH-cam channel, I am amazed that you have not thought of making your own insect screens. I know that it is possible to buy the netting. It looked as if there is already a frame to hold the screen, so it must be possible to glue this to the net and trim it to fit. Something that I discovered is that the netting of the insect screens not only stops insect intrusion but also stops dust - in Port obviously, not at sea.
Sammy !
I agree with the 3D printing idea. Do it for the same cost and keep the printer. Win, Win!!
Sam, another good video, another thumbs up. Watching a lot of sailing vids, yours is beginning to grow on me, not sure why. Maybe it's your solo sailing ability, or the creative ability to fix something that is failing with the utmost patience.
Well done Sam.
That poor lil dingy :)
Another great video Sam!
You can polish glass with the fine steel wool from the paint section.
Its got 4-5 zeros on the bag.
It dose chrome real good too.
@Noneshere. Bon Ami works well on glass to remove fine scratches and polish glass and 4 ought steel wool with dish soap works well too
Hi Sam, really cool to see this video. Looking forward to seeing more videos up the Chesapeake bay.
Can you pleeeease stow that fish hook away so that it is not dangling around where you work! Gives me the heebie jeebies thinking about you getting one in the eye. Great show Sam
Welcome and good bye from the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area .... typing this from Virginia Beach
"So that will be kind of fun." Really selling it! 🤣👍
Awesome video again man! Looking forward to sailing into NY video already! Thanks also for tips on window seals.. need to seal my aft hatch this winter, so similar projects ahead 👍
9:10 nice multi tasking move
It looks like it’s going to be a nice trip
Go to a dive shop and get neoprene cement to make the gaskets sealed.
They sell lil 10 foot inflatable dingys on eBay that have a motor mount and I’m guessing would work great for you cause they have a soft bottom unlike the nicer ones so it’d collapse smaller. There’s a 7.5 footer but I’d do the 10 so you can carry more weight and still could fit into a duffle bag when inflated. They’re about 350$ so isn’t too bad on the price front. You should look into it cause I know you’re getting fed up with the homemade ones. Good luck man!!!
You might want to do something about that fish hook ( at 1:59) before you catch yourself. People say it is a very unpleasant experience getting it out of one's body.
That tool looks like an oyster shucker
Treble hook hanging out is no bueno captain Sam.
Up here in North Carolina. Wishing I was sailing with you man!
I think I am going to paint my wood trim with some brown colored gelcoat.
Sam, When you sail from NYC to Boston, you could stop at Mystic,CT and tie up at the Mystic Seaport overnight. That would be awesome. Let us know if and when you would do that.
I love you Sam 😍😘❤️🥰
Dude, secure that treble hook!
The blue handled knife is a clam/orster opening tool.
Trim that toenail bro! Enjoy the videos. Fair winds.
Mr handyman, another awesome video.
Love the video man, keep it up.
my boat is still on the hard and every time I head to it to work on it I stop at a home depot or west marine and spend about $200 or $300 first, and usually don't even accomplish what I set out to do because either something doesn't fit or I end up needing to fix something else first, which means I need to make another trip. It's like a never ending cycle. How do you find all the parts you need while on the go? Do you find local shops when you're in port or do you order things on amazon and wait for them at a marina?
I ended up buying a 78 albin 30 ballad only problem it was built for cold weather so not much ventilation
use asa to print the screen things, anything else will fail pretty quick with the uv light.
Your tender looks a little flimsy - might have to send you some details of my simple, flat bottomed 2-sheets of ply nester, based on trad Portuguese fishing boat design, for when you have some slack!
It's a clam or oyster "shukking knife".
Your going to get snagged on that treble hook
What port will you be stopping in as you passage NY and the Long Island Sound? I’m in Port Washington. Manhasset Bay. Hope to have a chance to say hello. Really enjoy your adventures.
You can buy screen repair tape at any hardware store, it's literally sticky screen material!
Blue handled tool looks like Oyster shucker
Awesome!
ALWAYS plan for mistakes. That's why my parents had me (and then they stopped!)
for the toe rail, pull it off, lay 2" butyl tape and replace toe rail, done
Nice haircut. BOUT time. Lol 🤙👊👍💯
Looking at becoming a cruiser myself, taking sailing lessons and reading lots of books to get educated. Curious on how you are feeling about being an owner of a Cape Dory, I love the narrow look of the boat and was wondering how you fair as a solo cruiser on it.
I think NY is doing quarantine for out of state visitors. Something to keep in mind.
Yup, keep going buddy. Sorry. Maybe on the return.
isopropanol or methyl ethyl ketone is pretty decent for getting silicone off
if you use MEK wear rubber gloves though. will massively dry out your skin
I wish you hadn't pulled that screen out it could be saved with a screen patch. They sell the patches at Home Depot and yes they hold up to water exposure pretty good.
kman 4443 the patch i tried fell off almost immediately
@@samholmessailing Wow, I did it and mine came off three years later. I had to replace the screen but I was able to get a little more time out of it.
Can you use a screen mesh from Lowes? Cut it to shape.
Where did you get the new seals and what is the brand? Thank you in advance for your time.
As a 3D printer owner, I'd say the second option would work better. A thin mesh would be difficult for a printer in that price range.
Stop over in New Bedford and Martha's Vineyard if you can.
If you need any help or, perhaps tools for projects, when you get up to the Rhode island/Massachusetts area just drop a note.
Airplanehelicopter!
Something always happens when Zoe is on the boat XD
You should seriously consider a plastic kayak(walmart 150$ for 12ft). That dingy is going to drown you one day.
Sam, How did you seal/repair the aft end of the hatch woodwork where it is leaking? I have a CD25 with the same problem, leaking on both sides. Did you have to pull the hatch cover off? Great videos. Thanks. Eric Washington, DC
Pull the sliding hatch off and spread sealant around the wood trim
@@samholmessailing Thanks, done! Stay safe.
A bit late, but the seals on the portlights are the wrong way round. The seals are actually supposed to be of square-section rubber, fitting into the groove on the *moving* part of the frame: this beds to the static part much better when the dogs are tightened, rather than relying on sealant. It appears the glazing has also been incorrectly installed, as it seems to be oversized and covering the groove for the seal.
I think you have that mixed up with a different models. Non of those statements are correct. www.spartanmarine.com/all-products/standard-series-opening-port
Can you take us to the Thimbles on your way up?
Howdy Sam!
Hey Sam, how are you finding your DIY composting head? Is it going well? Loving the videos, keep up the good work!
krispycreme98 it works alright. Better than the holding tank for sure.
Sam, did you get the 50 duro or the 70 duro gasket stock?
your scrapper is a "Clam knife"
If you make it up to Passamaquoddy Bay in Maine, let me know!
Zoe met your mom. 😊
What rod holders did you use on the headliner? Thx
For the love of God someone give this guy a Dinghy and motor, he deserves it.
Nobody's going to suggest the oarlock enhancement for the water taxi?
