Yeah, but the PS1 used actual transparency effects for the water, which the Saturn could not do, which is why they went with a different water effect to compensate.
@@Rocket1377 I wish people would stop spreading that fud, the Saturn COULD do transparencies, but they had to be rendered on the second display processor VDP2 which most developers either weren't comfortable with programming or simply weren't aware due to poor developer tools released by Sega at the time.

Both look the same honestly, the only differences I see, Sega Saturn has more detail in terrain and lighting and PlayStation has better effects and sound. Put these two together we got PlayStation 2.
In 1997 had this game on both consoles, but would play on saturn more often because it felt darker, more atmospheric and the sound was somehow more pleasing. Pixelated graphics were the only slight issue but i only noticed that when i got the game on my ps1. My father would play on ps1 and me on Saturn. :D
Agreed. I played both too. Provided the resolution was high enough to see objects, know what they were, and didn't affect difficulty, that's all that mattered - because gameplay and atmosphere were more important (although the gameplay was certainly clunky). The 'reboots' have lost the originals' fanbase because they just hijacked the brand name to make a 3rd person shooter with a flat-chested girl - technically far greater, but nothing to do with the original tomb-raiding Lara Croft.
The textures dance like crazy on the PlayStation (as usual). There's also a lot of polygon flicker on the later. Saturn does a better job in those fields. But on anything else, the PlayStation looks kinda better.
You're all out of your minds. The PS1 polygons tremble like crazy and black lines become visible all the time, which barely happens in the Saturn version, if at all.
The Saturn version shows some distorsions of shapes in the water those aren't present on PS1. The PS1 version has some graphical glitches flickering between the textures. I suppose it's enough to say the Saturn wins for this time.
Geek Gamer Gui Hold your trigger, Sega saturn and ms dos version have same water effect no diffrence at all. This guy didnt made comparison water effect saturn Vs ms-dos tomb raider 1 version. Sega didnt win
Its a close one, but i first played where it all started - The Saturn. For pure nostalgia the Saturn for me is the winner - and that music is iconic on both systems.
Both consoles do a great job for the time, but considering that I met this wonderful game on the PS1, I prefer the latter, since it has better colors and finishes in general, because I have very good memories of the gray girl, although I recognize everything the potential of the Saturn.
It's wild, the Saturn version actually looks better during the training area in the mansion, especially with those water effects, but once the game starts it just falls apart. This is coming from someone who only had the Saturn version back in the day...
The game believe it or not, was originally going to be a saturn exclusive early in it’s development because Core couldn’t get the green light from Sony for a PlayStation release.
Well, it was actually released first on Saturn, albeit only two weeks before the PlayStation (and DOS) version. I imagine the Saturn release may have been delayed whilst the PlayStation version was made too.
@@jetfrog4574 you might want to rethink your comment. The Saturn only had the first tomb raider game. The hardware couldn’t handle the 2nd or 3rd game.
I have both, to me the Saturn lighting is more fitting for the game. the PS1 has to many clipping seams and some colors are to bright for its own good however it has a bit less jaggies. to me the Saturn is the winner. imho.
The Sega Saturn version is like someone trying to play the maximum settings on a system that can't do it. The textures are actually better, and there is more detail on the character models and the environments. The colors are also richer. It does start out darker, but people don't realize that you can adjust the gamma settings and it becomes identical lighting wise to the playstation version. The only crime it commits is a lower frame rate, but it is perfectly playable. I have no issues with the controls on the Saturn version. Also, some transparency stuff is missing, but there are some cool water effects on the Saturn that aren't on the other ones.
To my eyes the Saturn has richer and more vibrant colours with wider range of tones. The big difference, to me is that the PS1 version has black lines appearing in-between polygons which happens all the way through. This makes the Saturn version far superior in presentation and feel like a more polished product. Also, I think the textures warp more on the PS1 version. I'm starting to form the opinion that the Saturn, with the proper understanding of how to use it's vdp's, is the more powerful 3d system than the PS1.

Virtua fighter 2 compared to tekken2/3 , powerslave/exhumed compared to powerslave/exhumed PlayStation. I have both versions, I like both, water on Saturn is way better than the PSX version but the PSX version looks smoother overall, a little bit less dark but it's not a big deal for me.
Rodrigo González I totally agree with you the Saturn's colors are prettier to me but the PlayStation textures are way smoother, but tbat doesn't make a difference when I am playing
Looks like a matter of taste then. The underwater section is the worse aspect on Saturn version in my opinion. It's hard to even perceive that Lara is in the water. It's like the programmers tried hard to make the water transparent, but in the end became pretty dulled. For me it seems that she could've been floating around with zero gravity instead of swimming. 😊
I played both versions, the frame rate in the saturn version seems slower, and the textures have better quality on the psx version., the saturn version has brighter colors
The graphics seem more chattery in the Sega version, and Lara’s home is called “Gym” (small nitpick) and her feet sound effects are that of her normal boots. 😂
Saturn has better draw distance , lighting , and water effects. They are both so similar though thats just nit picking. I for one never did like tomb raider.I actually rented this for my sega saturn played it once , and went back to Guardian heros and Ultimate mortal kombat 3 lol. Then we went to the 32 bit /64 bit era. We saw the 64 make old things new again in 3-d. We got to see almost arcade perfect ports on the Saturn and Playstation.Even if they were lacking just a tad in something .I could rarely tell lol.
loving the Saturn don't mean "be not objective" the PS1 version is smoother, the framerate is better. Tomb Raider is a good game in both system, technically quickly surpass by others games in both either, but visually, the PS version is better.
ciredec Gellar what are you even talking about, PlayStation can't even keep the vertices they blink and even fall apart, holes everywhere! PlayStation has better sound & that's about it, everything else is worse
@@jamespong6588 the Saturn version isn't bug free either. Although the Playstation version has a big aliasing problem and the perspectives corrections are nonexistent. However, the textures are still finer, I'm not saying that the difference is huge, but it's overall smoother.
John Huffington The sound effects are noticeably worse on the Saturn with a lower bitrate, crackling and popping. The colours on the PlayStation are a. Bit better.
Non of the console versions back then were ever comparable to pc version, for the were just shrunk down versions of the original game. It was like forcing you to play your game on the lowest settings. But this point aside, I never expected that: I actually slidly favor the Play Station version, just for one reason, the look in the distances is not as appealing as it was in both the pc and Play Station version. Everything else was a bit better on the Saturn, but this and the fact that it was sometimes to dark made the Play Station version surperior.
You were wrong - no console war occurred in the comments. It's clear that the PlayStation was the better console, but the colour contrast on the Saturn version suited this game's atmosphere more. The obvious resolution difference wasn't as important then, with the Atari 2600 still in gamers' memories. Nowadays fanboys compare console resolutions and frame-rates that the human eye can't actually perceive during play LOL.
Queria que você fizesse se possivel a comparação do Juiced 2 PS2 vs PS3 e XBOX 360 vs PS3 vs PC. Ninguem fez até agora comparação desse jogo no youtube e creio que tenha diferença de gerações!
I prefer the PS1 version, but this is a great looking game for the Saturn. It shows the 3D potential the system had when developers understood the hardware.
The PlayStation had a geometric polygon engine.. it's clear to see it's far less blocky and smoother looking on the PlayStation.. also PlayStation version had a better frame rate
I don't know what you're on about. The PS1 version has gaps between geometry and no Z buffer while the saturn version looks just like the PC version with lower resolution
These both have different strengths, but I like Saturn version presentation a bit better. I may be mistaken, but it looks like it is running in a lower resolution? Still, the texture warping and polygon flickering issues are not as prevalent as on PS1. It does have crushed blacks, but better draw distance and underwater effects. No that I would go back to play any of these (Lara controls like tank in the PS1 era games), but from today's perspective, I'm simply more impressed by technical aspects of Saturn version.
I would still like a remaster of these games on modern consoles, to celebrate the 25th anniversary. I think if they did a bundle of all three trilogies (TR1-3, Legend-Anniversary-Underworld, and the 2013-18 reboot trilogy), it would sell really well.
@@Rocket1377 to be honest, year 1996 was so exceptional in gaming and so many classics have came out back then, I'm amazed no company seemed to get an idea of remastering these for modern platforms in "25 year anniversary" manner so far. Yeah agreed, I overall prefer the look of the Saturn version, although I imagine the lack of flares in TR 1 would make the that version a bit more frustrating in the darker areas.
@@Rocket1377 nobody needs the modern 'reboot' games remade. Firstly, they look and play fine. Secondly, they alienated the original's fanbase, as they had virtually nothing to do with Tomb Raider, tomb-raiding, or Lara Croft. @@Z64sports No I think it is the same but my standards must have lowered since then. It seems more playable when I play it now than I thought it did a few years ago.
The Saturn was a financial flop, as it was more expensive that it's competitors and had a terrible marketing campaign. A shame, because it had a bigger library of games than the Nintendo 64, and is an excellent console. I got mine cheap back in 1996 (it was reduced to a third of its original price in less than a year), and it is still one my favourite consoles of all time.
The Saturn is what started Sega's downfall. I owned a Saturn when they first came out and I was always happy with my choice. The only reason I also bought a PlayStation was for Gran Turismo.
Looking at a TH-cam video today, it seems that both versions are nearly identical, with slight advantages to one system or another. Back in 1996, however, it wasn't even close. PSX stomped all over the poor Saturn. I don't remember finding any Saturn Tomb Raider fans back then. Today, the competition is a bit more even, but that's mostly because the technology is very outdated and people are more forgiving of any visual faults. Short, short version: Saturn TR has longer draw distance, sharper color contrast and cool water distortion effects. Playstation has smoother colors, better shading and a higher framerate (30 vs 20 fps). Either way, it's a classic videogame that is a bit rough on the eyes, but still has its charms. There's that sense of isolation and just being lost in the middle of nowhere that's quite thrilling. I'm reminded a little of Minecraft in that sense. Yeah, that's where TR needs to go, not towards bad action movies, but Minecraft. Let's see Lara Croft square off against the Creepers.
Nope. This is very weak for the console. Remember that Saturn its technically more powerful than the PlayStation. The issue was that was hard to develop for. But the 3D on the original saturn version is weak.
@Fabricio Vega: You need to keep in mind that this game was developed for the PC, and ported to consoles. The PlayStation was capable of so much more as well. It's unfair to say that it looks bad on Saturn, when it wasn't built from the ground up using Saturn hardware. It still looks fantastic, and almost as good as the PS1 version.

You know, when looking at this comparison, it is truly hard to say which version is better, Look at the details, Example when you are in the pool, the colors and lighting on the playstation is different but the saturn as actual water effects when under the water that the playstation lacks. Looks great for both consoles

Prefiero el efecto de distorsión del agua al de la transparencia.

Both look the same honestly, the only differences I see, Sega Saturn has more detail in terrain and lighting and PlayStation has better effects and sound. Put these two together we got PlayStation 2.
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. This game reeks without the rose-tinted glasses.
The water effects are way better on saturn.

2:30 Cara, essa música me traz uma nostalgia, bons tempos viu :-)
Those gaps between polygon edges is what bothers me the most in Playstation games, along with the horrid texture distortion! Ugh!
Happens just as much on the Saturn. In fact, Saturn is the only console other than the PS1 that suffers from this issue.
The Saturn version shows some distorsions of shapes in the water those aren't present on PS1. The PS1 version has some graphical glitches flickering between the textures. I suppose it's enough to say the Saturn wins for this time.

Hold your trigger, Sega saturn and ms dos version have same water effect no diffrence at all. This guy didnt made comparison water effect saturn Vs ms-dos tomb raider 1 version. Sega didnt win
Its a close one, but i first played where it all started - The Saturn. For pure nostalgia the Saturn for me is the winner - and that music is iconic on both systems.
Congratulations on the great content.
They only downside on the PS1 are the polygon lines going through eachother on the scenary in certain parts, which was common in PS1.
The Saturn version is amazing. Just bought and love it. Much more atmosphere, that is all for this kind of game!

I have both, to me the Saturn lighting is more fitting for the game. the PS1 has to many clipping seams and some colors are to bright for its own good however it has a bit less jaggies. to me the Saturn is the winner. imho.
voltando em grande estilo!!!! \o/
I'm starting to form the opinion that the Saturn, with the proper understanding of how to use it's vdp's, is the more powerful 3d system than the PS1.
it's darker because is clipping... the graphics render in close proximity and the rest is dark.... this is your "more vibrant colours" :P They had to save texture and give black instead of textures everywhere. But it's best to turn a disadvantage into an advantage. That's what all saturn fanboys do all the time. As if the video from the game were inverted "deliberately" you would talk the opposite way. *You always say that to fit your thesis* This is pathetic..........
Real players are not stupid. They just saw what saturn games look like and that's why they chose the rival sony consoles. I remember that nobody wanted to buy then because there were only poor quality games, mostly *"for 5 minutes"*

And here i though the Nintendo vs Sega war could be heated... Be more calm about what you say, everything is 25 years behind us now... And nobody would ever worked on the Saturn is still there to make game at Sega nowadays so that's just uncalled for.
And yes, the Saturn always had a cleaner 3D than the PSX... ( inb4 Spyro ) Which is normal since the PSX does not warp texture for pleasure, it does in order to gain more power and be a better 3D console. If the two screens were inverted, i would have been very surprised.
I don't think the Saturn could have handled Tomb Raider 3 with its clean but expensive 3D though.
@@kakaszka7236 LOL a fanboy still crying about this? Get a grip - it's decades ago! The PlayStation was clearly the better console, and it's known the Saturn was difficult for developers. However, for whatever technical reasons, and despite the lower resolution, the colours and contrast of the Sega version suit the game more, as the darkness gives the tombs more atmosphere - which was what the games were all about.
Neither consoles are as good as an Xbox.
Virtua fighter 2 compared to tekken2/3 , powerslave/exhumed compared to powerslave/exhumed PlayStation. Last bronx, panzer zwei, - virtua cop2 compared to time crisis, alien trilogy- same as ps1 but not even using the second processor. I could name plenty more, then there's the 2D games that aged far more gracefully. Yeah saturn was the more powerful machine by actually quite a bit. Only 3rd party ports suffered.
On the caveat though - you know how to code it as it wasn't in c++

At 11:13, it's interresting to see the difference between square textures on Saturn and triangle textures on PS. On the right of the SS video, we can see the square wall texture turned into a triangle. On this frame, PS version looks better.

Think the game launched first on the Saturn
I played both versions, the frame rate in the saturn version seems slower, and the textures have better quality on the psx version., the saturn version has brighter colors
The Saturn was also incapable of transparencies, which is why the water effects look much better on the PS1.

Going solely by this video, the graphics on the PS1 version look cleaner with less jaggies, but it has more obvious texture seams.
John Huffington The sound effects are noticeably worse on the Saturn with a lower bitrate, crackling and popping. The colours on the PlayStation are a. Bit better.
John Huffington Okay so the colours may be a subjective thing but the sounds on PlayStation most definitely have a higher bitrate and that is fact.
PSX was better for 3D games, his polygons are smoothier. But I prefered Saturn visuals underwater.
Nothing like a Tomb Raider versus video to start the 32-bit console war all over again, right ?
You were wrong - no console war occurred in the comments. It's clear that the PlayStation was the better console, but the colour contrast on the Saturn version suited this game's atmosphere more. The obvious resolution difference wasn't as important then, with the Atari 2600 still in gamers' memories. Nowadays fanboys compare console resolutions and frame-rates that the human eye can't actually perceive during play LOL.

@@Rocket1377 that makes sense. But glad that you enjoy it😀👍
The Saturn is what started Sega's downfall.
Water and textures are miles better on Saturn.
Very good 3d for the Saturn.
Nope. This is very weak for the console. Remember that Saturn its technically more powerful than the PlayStation. The issue was that was hard to develop for. But the 3D on the original saturn version is weak.
@Fabricio Vega:
You need to keep in mind that this game was developed for the PC, and ported to consoles. The PlayStation was capable of so much more as well.
