Now that I'm going through all Nico's videos before. Seriously, as someone already mentioned previously, Nico's reviews are the only ones that I can trust now. I was wondering how a video introducing a $2000 astrophotography kit (to me it's entry level now) could last over an hour. But this is the real thing that any new amateur needs - no advertisements, no meaningless recommendations. Thinking about Nico's other videos such as astrophotography without a tracker, he's the only, really the only one, who is this responsible to us. Skill is over everything. This kind of long videos indeed help a lot of people getting their real skills better, not the equipments. Nobody can handle a 10-inch Newtonian at the beginning.

After watching your videos, I started with the Canon T7 kit with a Bogen tripod, ballhead, intervalometer, and dew heater and got hooked taking pictures of Orion and Andromeda. It wasn't long before I had ordered a Star Adventurer Pro, Canon 50mm f1.8 and a Samyang 135mm f2 and have been loving it. A "2.5mm-C1 Camera Remote Control Shutter Release Cable" goes from the Star Adventurer snap port to the Canon T7 and allows me to use the SA Console app on my phone for my intervalometer. I just use the standalone intervalometer for calibration frames at this point. My brain tells me to complete a full year of widefield to get a better feel for the night sky before getting a setup for more distant imaging but we will see how that goes. Capturing widefield with this setup while also capturing higher focal length targets at the same time sounds like a great way to maximize the amount of clear nights... Hello Nico, great video for us the new in this hobbie. There is something that I cant understand, it is about the modified cameras. Why the people put in front of the len an IR cut filter if before of the modification the camera already has an IR/UV cut filter? Why do I modify a camera if later I will put a filter similar to the one I have removed?
I have the Star Adventurer, which I got hypertuned, it's able to do 4min guided subs at 400mm with a total load of 4.8kg (including the counter-weight) and I love it, however, in hindsight I wish I had of gone for the AZ-GTi and used it in EQ mode. Skywatcher have also just announced the Star Adventurer GTi which has Dec and RA motors and full goto just like the AZ-Gti, would definitely advise anyone wanting to get into the hobby to wait for the Star Adventurer GTi rather than grab the regular Star Adventurer as the goto function is worth its weight in gold when trying to find your target, especially at longer focal lengths!
@@davidkennedy3050 My results speak for themselves, the equipment I used was easily capable of 3-4 min subs at 400mm. Of course i'd be "better off" with a bigger and more expensive mount, but who wouldnt? And considering this video is about cheap and capable set ups the HEQ5 isnt on topic.
Great beginners tutorial, Nico! Could those circular gradients your dealing with be the reported concentric rings that now and again plague some Nikons?

Thanks very much for this. I'm looking into trying some astrophotography again; the last time I tried was back in 2000 with a Meade ETX 90 and a Pentax ME. Although of very limited means I have the patience to save for for these parts, I already have a Nikon D610 which I know is excellent, I may try to use my vintage Sigma MiniWide II for some wide field photography.
Short flats get messed up on a DSLR because they catch the physical shutter moving, I find it easier to lower the ISO and take dark flats to match those settings. Alternatively use a EL panel instead of LED as they are fainter.
Ah, yes, could be that too! I think you are right it may have been that in the demo I showed, but at a slightly longer flat you get banding from the PWM on the LED panel
@@NebulaPhotos I thought the longer exposure removed the PWM from LED's, they are flickering thousands of times a second so it shouldn't really matter what the exposure is as long as its not too low. The important thing is to not blow out the whole frame and catch the vignetting and dust.
Excellent video and good equipment choice, especially as I have a D5600 already. Did you know the 5300 and 5600 have built in interval shooting? Is this good enough to remove the need for the intervalometer?
Yes, if exposures are 30s or under, it works well. I don't think bulb timing can be combined with the built-in intervalometer, so it may not replace the need for an external one, if your desired exposures are longer than 30s (common with slower lenses, telescopes, esp. from darker skies).
Thanks again for this video. I actually lack of lenses, as I've the stock 18-55 and a 55-200mm nikon zooms + a couple of cheap catadrioprtic lenses (500 f/6.3, 900 f/8). Unfortunately as I managed to find a Star Adventurer kit at a decent price, bad weather started, then I got flu, then family issues... in a word, the end of winter passed (and the easiest subjects did pass too) and now I'm looking for new subjects to shoot at :D ps: I would add in your kit a nice ball head to be mounted between the camera and the star tracker. It helps a lot, once the polar alignment is done, to point almost whatever you need to and their weight doesn't really compromise the balance of the star tracker :)
Great video. You mentioned the use of an IR cut filter that passes H alpha. Are you using a Kolari Vision filter? Which one did you use? Thank you and have a nice day.
I have a Z7ii and a 150-600 as well as a 14-30. I need to really, really, really study your videos and figure out what setup to mount it on. I live in Houston, so LP is a huge downer here.
Hi Brian, I didn't use a ballhead here. If you have the Star Adventurer, I'd suggest attaching the camera directly to the Dec bracket or even better get a ring system for the lens. With a ring system, you should be able to rotate in addition which means any composition is possible, but much more stable than a ballhead. If you are just asking generally what ballhead I recommend, I suggest the brand 'Oben' for sub-$100 and 'FLM' or Really Right Stuff for higher-end ballheads. Personally, the ballhead I use the most is this one: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1265737-REG/flm_12_32_940_cb_32_f_ball_head.html
For a good budget tripod, I can also recommend the official Star Adventurer legs. Really simple design with a platform that matches the base of the wedge and has stabilising shelf too. I think mine was £60 a couple of years ago.

Unfortunately as I managed to find a Star Adventurer kit at a decent price, bad weather started, then I got flu, then family issues... in a word, the end of winter passed (and the easiest subjects did pass too) and now I'm looking for new subjects to shoot at :D
ps: I would add in your kit a nice ball head to be mounted between the camera and the star tracker.
I am also trying to figure out what filter he used. No luck yet
great content as usual Nico. subscribed and entered. fingers crossed.
I have a Z7ii and a 150-600 as well as a 14-30. I need to really, really, really study your videos and figure out what setup to mount it on. I live in Houston, so LP is a huge downer here.
Just catching up on this. Great as always.
Hi Nico, great video! What bullhead do you recommend?
This is just awesome. Thank you!! Can anyone direct to practice image files? It's -5°F outside so I'm staying in. :)
For a good budget tripod, I can also recommend the official Star Adventurer legs. Really simple design with a platform that matches the base of the wedge and has stabilising shelf too. I think mine was £60 a couple of years ago.
That processing time was impressive. Are you able to provide some recommended specs for a computer to accomplish that speed?
I asked him on a live stream, I believe he said he has a 5950X and 64GB RAM.
