I use this razor for the first time this morning with a feather blade on setting 5. It's one of the best shows I've ever had. I'm so glad I purchased this razor. I actually got a better shave then I did with my Muhle R41. No nicks or weepers whatsoever. I love this razor.
I have watched many shave demonstrations on youtube. Some of them like Nick are excellent. Geofatboy's demonstration on how to shave with a DE here is the best single video of its kind I have ever seen. Regardless of the razor he uses, the blade, the cream. You want to improve your technique? Watch this dude a couple times.

I don’t see how it’s weird to learn how to shave properly, especially since doing it wrong can seriously butcher your face with nasty cuts & scars. Yeah, if he was shaving in a Speedo bathing suit & flashing his body to the camera, I agree that would be weird. Tell your wife to chill… GeoFatboy is a cool bro & far from being weird in the least.

Welcome back! We missed you! Great video! I always enjoy watching your videos, teaches me something new every time. You're the reason I started wet shaving 2 years ago, by coming across one of your videos, now I'm hooked! :)
I have been following most of your shaving videos since the time i swicthed from Catridge Razor to Safety Razor and your channel is best on TH-cam for shaving videos. I am using Parker adjustable and do 2 passes (with and across grain) for my shave. I would like to know if want a quick shave sometime then can we just go with single pass of across the grain directly with number 5 setting when have a week's beard growth?
You lucky people in the States, you always cream off the best first :) I don't see yet this Parker razor anywhere in the UK.. Good to have you back G...I love that blue (royal blue.., navy blue?) colour of your lather bowl..there you go..yet another goodie you have over :) Cheers

If u think about it 🤔 , it kinda has 9 settings counting the 1/2 marks One, one and a half and two would be mild...two and a half 3 and 3 and a half would be medium. 4 , four and a half and 5 would be aggressive.
Saw quite a few of your videos, @geofatboy and thoroughly enjoyed them. Just got myself a Parker Variant Adjustable razor. It gave a good shave (have used it just twice, it arrived on 6th June 2024). I find that since the screwing(tightening end) is the same as the adjusting end, if I keep the adjustment at 1.5 or 2, in my hand it turns inadvertently and sometimes it reaches 5 and once it even unscrewed. Going from 1 to 5 is just a little bit of unscrewing, right? How do you avoid touching the end during shaving so as not to disturb the setting? I am sure I am doing something wrong. The notches of base plate and the top plate were aligned. Can anyone point me to a video which displays how to hold this razor while shaving? I am a beginner in wet shaving with DE razors.
I think it is a good point, that when you don't have time in the morning for a three pass shave baby butt shave, I've done plenty one and two pass shaves. I heard so many comments "if I had that much time", well in real life you adapt. If your face isn't worth an extra five minutes, stick with cartridge or electric shaving. Let's see how your face looks in 10 years. Just sayin... I picked one of these up for Christmas, saw you had a review. Nice. Thanks!
Hi Geo, I like your video in the Variant. The be seen some videos regarding this razor and would like your input. I’ve seen instances where ppl talk about the blade reveal not being even on both sides or the cap being crooked. What are your thoughts on that topic?
Just had my second shave with the varient and have to say it’s given me probably the best shave I’ve ever had. The first was ok but not as great because I left the razor on #3 for the first pass and #2.5 for the next subsequent 2 passes which did give me some irritation on the neck. Today I did first pass on #3 second pass on #2 and final against the grain pass on #1 and wow bbs smooth and little to no cuts or irritation. Used proraso green and the razor glided across skin no problem. Def my new fav. The adjustability is great
*Thanks for the shave Geo!* I’m definitely thinking of pulling the trigger on this one. _I have a Gillette Slim but it’s to precious to me to take out of the house._ This might do the trick for me.
I've been looking at your videos and it's making wonder about starting shaving again after 40 years of having a beard. I stopped shaving because whenever I gave myself a close shave, neck hairs and under chin hairs would grow back under my skin and cause lumps when I would have to use a pin to pull out the hairs! What was I doing wrong?
Clip it down with a #1 or #2 clipper attachment and then shave it off with a safety razor. Your face will feel like a baby's bottom, and-no more itching. bit.ly/AllSafetyRazorsSN
@@geofatboy The trouble is that I've tried a few times over the years and I still got hairs growing back under my skin! I thought I must have been doing things wrong or perhaps it's a known condition, I don't know. I have never actually used a safety razor though so might be worth a try.
Thanks for the video Geo. Nice! This is definitely a razor that I am looking into buying, as my first adjustable. Your comments convinced me, but your shaving method surprised me. I would expect you to go from less to more aggressive setting, and not the other way around. I would expect to have to use a more aggressive setting to shave off the details and that a lower setting would not be capable to deal with it. Am I missing something here? Thanks!
I guess the defining factor is direction of cut Along the grain > Across the grain > Against the grain So an aggressive along t-g will still be milder than a mild against t-g
I am new to DE shaving and am not sure what to get. If you were stranded on a desert island for a year and could only have one razor, one box of 100 blades, and 3 shave creams (hopefully this would last a year until your rescue) what would your choices be? This would help a lot, thanks.
Great video! Haven't used an adjustable razor but thinking of purchasing one to try different settings depending on the beard length and the Parker Variant seems a great choice. However I am a bit concerned that they come with a bigger head than OC/CC razors and that might be a problem when shaving under the nose (always having difficulty cleaning that area!). Did you have such issues with Parker or other adjustable razors?
Which is better the parker variant or the futur merkur? Because I want to make just one purchase a good purchase, I am new to this classic shave and I need to choose one of these two
Nice video. I hope many new wet-shavers consider this safety razor as their first given the variety of settings. What modern adjustable razor would you compare the Parker Variant set at '5' to? Merkur Progress? Merkur Futur? Merkur Vision? If set at '5' does it shave as close (or closer) than a Mühle R41? (Some have claimed it does, but smoother.) Thanks for your demonstration.
It is similar in function to the Merkur Progress, but has a different finish and a metal adjustment knob as opposed to plastic. Nearly as aggressive as the Mühle R41-but smoother shaving. I usually recommend non-adjustables to newcomers but this one is an exception.
I already have a Merkur Progress, but was hoping for something similar in aggressiveness to the iKon Tech, but not as harsh. Care to do a video on the iKon Tech -- and how to tame it -- for the shaving masochists out there? It definitely needs a user manual for getting a smooth, comfortable shave (with little risk of razor burn). I don't know if it's possible -- or I just need leather skin! Otherwise, I'll just have to live with my Mühle R41. Thanks!
I need to get some new pics of the iKon Tech up on the site-shavenation.com/search?q=iKon+tech It looks like a mild little shaver. I'll take it for a shave and see how it goes.
You may be in for an unpleasant surprise! I'd only recommend using it for one pass at first, then finish with your favorite razor. You probably won't be able to to AGT for a while.
Thanks Ronnie. Agreed-Brushing it on is the best part! Here are the marble cups: shavenation.com/search?q=marble+brush+cup Since you're a veteran-enter MILITARY10 at checkout for 10% off your order.
God, I wish I was as comfortable with a DE as you are. I have that exact razor, bought it before seeing this video. I'm scared to death of it. I wish someone would actually teach me how to shave with these, in person because my father never taught me. I cut the heck out of my face with a cartridge razor with lots of irritation today and so I just don't feel I'm ready for a DE. Are cuts and nicks with a DE similar to the ones I get with a cartridge razor?
You need to tilt the razor on angle and move slowly. The key is wet and warm face, not cheap shaving cream, and practice. Then after that you can start experimenting with different blades.
Generally, if you cut yourself with cartridge razor, you might be doing something wrong. Irritation seems to be normal in that kind of though, mostly due to the nature of cartridge razor. Whether it's because they pull the hair a bit, or because multiple blades will irritate anyone's skin. If you have this razor, set it first on the mildest setting. Get a mild to medium aggressive razor blade or a sampler blade pack dedicated to to sensitive skin. Maybe geofatboy can help, and you can also visit shaving emporium as they specifically sell blade sampler pack for sensitive skin. As for the shaving process... Three general rules. This is for any kind of shaving razor, cartridge, DE, SE. 1) Always shave moist. Whether do it while showering or get a decent preshave oil and shaving cream. 2) Shave in short, slow strokes. Speed doesn't equal more hairs shaved. It just speeds up irritation. 3) Shave lightly. Let the blade do the work. Only put just enough pressure to make the razor contact the skin. Now, for a general rule for DE shaving, find a perfect angle where the blade can meet the skin. Usually, as someone, 30 degrees work. Also, if it still irritates, shave with the grain. Hope that helps.
I am 68, and when I first started shaving, I just bought a razor, brush and soap and got on with it. I received no instruction from my father or elder brothers, although I remember getting razor burn (from being heavy handed) and asking my father almost weepily how the hell was I going to deal with it/endure it, and he replied:"don't worry, your skin will toughen up to it" not much sympathy there then! (Big boys didn't cry back then)I carried on as I was told, and lo and behold, it all worked out fine as he said. Unfortunately while I was still young plastic razors came on the market and I was lured away by them, something I now regret. On returning to DE shaving (after some decades) I still had to undergo the same learning curve but got back into the knack in no time.(about 2 months) Just go out and buy yourself a good beginners razor, a Merkur 34c, an Edwin Jagger or Muhle '89' or a Rockwell 6s or 6c adjustable, (very good) complete with some good but mild blades, Derby Extra blades are a good first blade to start off with, (use for about 3 months)then try the green Astra blade or the Perma sharp blade (2 of my favourites)Then buy yourself a good brush, try the Razorock 24mm synthetic, and a good shaving cream. Try Taylor of Old Bond St., (TOBS) Shaving cream, and then give yourself a bit of time (about 6-8 weeks) and you will never look back. Above all, don't be girlie about it. You will give yourself the odd Nick or dose of razor burn, but it is all part of learning by your mistakes. And don't worry, there won't be torrents of blood gushing under the bathroom door, frightening your dear mum. Oh, and having said that, buy some alum block and a good after shave lotion (Nivea cooling is one of the best, or some of the face lotions used by the ladies, especially those with a "repairing" action. Don't be frightened of the Parker Variant, just take your time and be careful, you'll find it's a real pussycat, and gives a great shave. AND DON'T BE GIRLIE ABOUT IT!!!
Hi Vance, The Merkur Progress is a fantastic razor and has passed the test of time. We haven't had a return or complaint on one in the 7 years that we've been selling them. shavenation.com/search?q=merkur+progress I prefer the long handle model myself. FYI-The Variant has had a few quality control issues that they are trying to get worked out, that's why it's currently unavailable.
I have thick coarse facial hair along with sensitive skin. I use a Parker sr1 and tried the shark blades that it came with. wasn't a huge fan of shark . any suggestions of the blades I should use that would be better than shark ??
@geofatboy haven't seen you break out the '59 fat boy in a long time... I recently just got one.. really love the adjustability and the weight. Still one of your all time faves? Best, Trevor
Will this be able to shave leaving behind a 1 or 1.5mm hair say if used at the lowers setting? I am trying to find way to achieve that with safety razors
Hello! Greetings from S.Korea. I'm on the fence about Parker Variant and Rockwell 6C(or 6S) as next level of basic razor. As moving from 1st pass to 3 pass, it needs to adjust the agressiveness level(ex, 3 to 1). Then, the interchangeable Rockwell 6S(C) can be a bit hassle? Parker Variant needs not to interchange plate side. But many shavers like Rockwell regardless this handicap. Which can you recommend for me for just and final one choice, Parker Variant or Rockwell 6 S(C)?
dyey Recently, I decided to Rockwell 6C gunmetal and have been satisfied with it. This week, I’m waiting my gillette slim adjustable and fatboy from ebay. 😅 Thank you for your concern.
Nice review as always... I have a few adjustable DE's and this seems to be a copy of the Progress in all aspects, well except that annoying plastic knob at the end. I think that at some point I will add this to my rotation, I like Parkers and i assume this is made in India too. Now how did you manage to grow so much bear in just a few seconds.? Hehehe...
I love my Variant! Great to see it in the hands of one of the first TH-cam shavers I ever watched when I first got into DE shaving.

geofatboy it's beautiful.
If you compare the Parker to the Merkur Futur, which one do you prefer?
Thanks!
They are both great razors, but you can't beat German engineering!
love the TOBS rose & lavender 😍
Thanks for the reminder-I haven't used the lavender in a while. Time to bust that one out.
what razor do u recommend for first time shavers with sensitive skin? tha ks in advance!
Hi friend what's the best double edge razor you have every used. This might be interesting ???👍
Thanks for the review. The design of this razor is very similar to the Merkur Progress.
How would you compare the two?
The progress and variant have similar features. Different finishes and different adjustment knobs. Similar shaving. The variant costs less.
Hi Geo, did Parker fix the issue on the black version? Earlier models and customers were complaining the paint flakes off.
Contents Differ Thank you:) was on the fence on buying one, glad they fixed the issue with them.
Scheefinator shave with a 30 Degree Angle Brother
On returning to DE shaving (after some decades) I still had to undergo the same learning curve but got back into the knack in no time.(about 2 months)
Just go out and buy yourself a good beginners razor, a Merkur 34c, an Edwin Jagger or Muhle '89' or a Rockwell 6s or 6c adjustable, (very good) complete with some good but mild blades, Derby Extra blades are a good first blade to start off with, (use for about 3 months)then try the green Astra blade or the Perma sharp blade (2 of my favourites)Then buy yourself a good brush, try the Razorock 24mm synthetic, and a good shaving cream.
How does this compare to the Merkur Progress? I have the Merkur and it has become my favorite.
Thanks for the reply. I have the long handle Progress. It is a very good razor.
Good stuff. Dig your videos big time.
Thank you Bill.
I have thick coarse facial hair along with sensitive skin. I use a Parker sr1 and tried the shark blades that it came with. wasn't a huge fan of shark . any suggestions of the blades I should use that would be better than shark ??
Coarse hair with sensitive skin... I would suggest either Feather or Personna Platinum (Israel) blades (it's called Personna Red in the US I think)
Thanks for the guide for novices like me)
I'm think I'm sold on this new razor
Many thanks for the video. Top notch indeed. Big fan sir! harrumph!
Thank you for your support!
You look like AARON FINCH an Australian Cricketer ☺
Do you ship overseas countries like to Bangladesh? What is your preferred courier? Are your prices including shipping?

Hey Geo are you Italian by any chance?
geo mike herd did you give that razor away to
@geofatboy haven't seen you break out the '59 fat boy in a long time... I recently just got one.. really love the adjustability and the weight. Still one of your all time faves? Best,
Trevor
Yep, I still love it and break it out on special occasions!
If you are still developing facial hair on the upper cheeks do you recommend doing a 2 pass or could you still do 3?
I usually just keep going until I feel smooth! Usually 2 or 3 passes.
What is your favorite DE razor?
Awesome video as always!) Besides shaving cream perform exellent.)
Thanks Dismont!
Will this be able to shave leaving behind a 1 or 1.5mm hair say if used at the lowers setting? I am trying to find way to achieve that with safety razors
You will need to use a clipper set on zero or one to accomplish that: shavenation.com/collections/clippers-trimmers
Thanks!
This or the Merkur Futur? Looking to get my first DE razor
I normally shave with my lawn mower, should I consider a DE safety razor or just stick with my routine?
Stick with the lawn mower, then second pass with abrasive paper.
Paint thinner as after shave...
Disinfo Agent ok thanks any recommendation for a paint thinner balm?
A generous coating of translucent lacquer to seal the pores and give you that smooth baby bottom sensation of course! Haha!
Disinfo Agent lawn mower bbs every time!
geofatboy thanks for the reply, it runs on gas 👍👍
Do you like the Parker variant over the Rockwell 6C
Looks great! I want to have one, but it´s sold out!
See above.
parker variant vs parker 63c which one is more aggressive with the same blade?
Did you buy one of those? I'm almost sure to buy Parker variant, but I'm searching for more opinions. Hope you found good razor!
dyey Recently, I decided to Rockwell 6C gunmetal and have been satisfied with it. This week, I’m waiting my gillette slim adjustable and fatboy from ebay. 😅 Thank you for your concern.
Anyone know of any good travel cases that would fit this Parker Variant or the Edwin Jagger DE89 razor?
Geo have you ever tried cold water shaves?
You mean like this?: th-cam.com/video/d-z07wbmdOg/w-d-xo.html
Yes thank you!
Please review the Parker 97R
thank you for the video and review
Thank you!
Hehehe...
How easy is it to over-tighten the razor?
Great review sir.
that,s a nice razor it looks like the merkur progress adjustable razor good video
Thanks John-Yes and no to the Progress-Variant comparison. Similar yet different.
Geo, can I use almond/olive oil as a pre-shave oil? Thanks.
almond, olive, canola, vegetable-use what you have where you are! That's my motto. BTW-the price of olive oil is going up 20% so get it quick :)
People on eBay are still ripping people off. $21.99 plus $ 3.87 for a used Shavely’s which is new at Dollar General for $ 7.25
