If you read some history, US supported Saddam in the 80s. They were almost pals.
He wanted to get rid of USD for oil transactions. That's a red flag for US, they did the same to Gaddafi.
He was also a violent dictator and so was Gaddafi. Remember the USA didn't kill either of them. Hussein was convicted by courts in Iraq as seen here and Gaddafi was mobbed by hundreds of people and beaten to death. That has nothing to do with the USA's intentions, there's a reason they were reviled.

I remember how bizarre all of this was. Don't get me wrong, he deserved the death sentence, since he actually ended up in court. But as he was at his peak of his atrocities we condemned him for, we full well knew about all of them and allied with him against Iran. And he ended up in court because we invaded his country on 100% false pretenses which he was actually innocent of, we killed a bunch of civilians bombing the place, then arrested him and dragged him into court over things that had nothing to do with why we were supposedly there....because he was actually innocent of the stuff we said he did to make the case to invade in the first place. It was just the craziest shit. Because Saddam actually got what was coming to him for things he did in his past. But the path to get there was so dirty and dishonest, and also riddled with the death of innocents that we killed getting to him, that there was nothing gratifying about it. It just made us look no better than him.
