Dante is one of the most powerful tools in live audio right now and understanding how to use it can make playback during gigs and soundchecks so much easier.
In this video, we'll connect a Yamaha QL1 mixer to a DAW using the built-in Dante card using pro tools. If you have a different mixer with a Dante card inserted then the process should be similar. From here we'll route the audio out of the mixer and record it in pro tools

I'm so not used to new tech... With analog mixer I just plug in jacks and it works ;)

@@OffshoreAudio Thank you thank you thank you. I think generally the internet could use more dante stuff or just generally videos about this kind of gear. I have not found many live sound videos to this degree of quality and clarity. All I can say is keep it up you did very well.

Currently using a behringer x18 with a mini pc running dante via and using a 24' touchscreen. Total cost 1000€ 😂
Works well for me, loads of ins and outs for a fraction of the price of a dante muxer (or 4 Dante network midules) 😂
This might (probably does to some extent, I’d guess) vary between Dante implementations on the various Dante-enabled consoles, wouldn’t it?
I think the basic takeaway here is the console’s channel direct outs have to be virtually patched to its Dante matrix for it to appear correctly on the network so that it can be correctly selected as the source on the Virtual soundcard’s interface that the DAW’s input routing pulls from. A little convoluted, but not particularly complex. It helps *me* to picture it in my mind’s eye this way, because I “see” each “node” or client device on a Dante network as having an input and output matrix that doesn’t necessarily have an expected 1:1 patch, and Dante is simply a really slick, very simply clever (and massive!) patchbay/transit matrix.

OK but if you use the Dante Controller software's Router, that Dante RX channel can be routed to laptop from there, and not from the mixer, works the same no? The "Getting signal from the desk" on the DAW portion is where I'm stuck. I believe the DM2000 is not properly set taking audio from say channel 45/46 from the desk and sending it to any of the Dante channels. The reason is it all works with layers of channel groups and assignments. It is frustrating to use when nothing makes sense. Any hint is welcome.
@Offshore Audio First of all THANK YOU, you're videos are a massive help. After watching your videos, I tried to set up RIO 16/8 + QL1 + DVS (daisy chained without switch) today for multitrack recording tomorrow and had some issues getting sound from QL1 to DVS. For some reason it finally seemed to work after changing the channel count on the DVS from 32x32 to 16x16. Before changing the channel count I actually got sound to DVS, but only on Dante25+26 which corresponded to the Stereo Out mix, not via the Direct Out (Dante1-16).
In your video you're using the local I/O and not a RIO stage box, so I wonder if this changes the setup process at all? In my mind it wouldn't, as the RIO would send over Dante 1-16, the console would pick it up as Dante Input and populate the channels with the same Dante 1-16, and then send the same Dante 1-16 as Dante Output to DVS via Direct Out. Or would I need to send on Dante 17-32 as 1-16 is already in use by the RIO? I might be misunderstanding the concept of a "Dante Channel", as well as Inputs and Outputs in this regard - or at least I suspect I might because I don't really understand it fully..
I know it's a long shot and troubleshooting with only this limited information is nigh on impossible but if you have any idea where I might have gone wrong, please let me know!
Hey, thanks so much for the lovely comment. I've not been hands-on with the QLs in a little while. I had a play around in the editor to get my head around it again and I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work. Dante ins from the Rio and Dante outs from the channel direct out makes sense. lad you got it sorted in some way. My other advice would've been to use Dante controller to route it. You could also route the signal directly from the Rio box to DVS that way, bypassing the console.Sorry, I'm not more helpful but you certainly reminded me how much these consoles can mess with your head.
First off: thank you for your clear and easy to understand video.
So I have a question: can that Yamaha QL1 mixer send audio to multiple outputs at the same time? I have been tasked with recording a live performance by the artist and I'm guessing the in-house mixer is going to be sending tracks out the analog outputs for wedge monitors. So If a track is assigned an analog output already (besides the stereo mix bus), will the Dante output still be able to receive that track's audio?
Also it's a bummer that the USB record function on that board can only record a stereo mix because I was hoping to rely on this for a redundant, post-fader backup option. Any other ideas for getting a redundant recording besides a second laptop on the the secondary Dante port or the analog outputs?

Hey Andrew, Thanks for these videos, massive help really. I was wonering if you have used the Rio 3224 with the Dante setup. I am being supplied this next week alongside a QL5 and a laptop running Waves Live (why….) and i am unsure as to why I would need the Rio if I can just go ethernet into laptop. Is this because it might be using software differnet to DVS? Any help would be great, thanks so much!

Hey, So glad you liked the videos! I've not used waves tracks myself but I had a look into it and I can't see why it wouldn't work going straight from Tracks to the mixer using DVS. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the situation but your Rio unit would normally be stage side, and for physical inputs and outputs, i.e. not near your mixer/ laptop. Is the Rio perhaps just to have next to the stage/ speakers to elimiate long cable runs? I hope that made some sense. long story short DVS+ mixer would work just fine. DVS +RIO + mixer would also work. Let me know how it pans out!

It was on windows but there are mac drivers for the Klark Teknik card. You'd have to do the routing on the app since it's a rack mount version but the process should be the same. Similarly, even if you're not using Pro Tools you would select the audio device in whatever DAW you were using. Hope that helps.
Hi, newbie question: is it possible to use Dante between a Yamaha QL and a Daw in studio recording for overdub ? Is there any latency problems ? Is that work like an analog in-line console ?

Hi, there would be latency, though dante is usually very low, a few ms. It sounds like you would need to use an insert send and return to emulate an inline console. I've never used Dante in a studio so I can't say how well it'll work. I would recommend downloading dante virtual sound card and trying it out. Let me know what you find!
How can you set this up if your planing to go Dawless?
