My birth city has kind of a Beatnik atmosphere now, and I love it. Poetry readings, little downtown art scenes/studios, coffeehouses, etc. I wasn't alive when the original Beatniks roamed the earth, but the Neo-Beatnik movement seems to be gathering steam in my generation and beyond.

I just said to my wife, I never knew that they had Capucchino, nor Expresso coffee. We are both from NYC (Brooklyn), and never saw coffee like this. Of course, most New Yorkers that we knew back in the 50's and 60's, would order their coffee thusly, two sugars, and two (Very) small containers of milk. At least I think it was milk. Rocky and Bullwinkle were my favorite cartoon as a kid in the 60's! Of course, the stooges were my all time favorites, for comedy. Loved those guys!

Beatniks are the ORIGINAL Hippies. The term Beatnik was meant as a derogatory term to describe that nonconformist artsy type of 1950's person, especially in the later part of the decade. Who thought that life was more than acquiring material wealth and keeping up with the Joneses.

I watched these cartoons when I was a kid in the 1970's you know, ( the generation where most of us aren't offended by anything) and loved it. Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons had lots of great characters. Unfortunately kids today are too easily offended by everything and would probably never leave their " Safe Spaces" after watching 1 1/2 minutes of an episode, "Reeeeeeeeeeeeee"
Beatniks are like cool hippies. They're nothing like hipsters. Hipsters aren't vacant enough to be near either on the style spectrum. Beatniks wear black in order to keep things cool and expressionless. We don't want to make any kind of statement; we're just keeping it real. Damn I need more jazz clubs around my town to mingle with my kind.
