The Penwith peninsular - Penzance and St Ives - Ride out / walk back with Paul

  • There is a short, and yet stunning stretch of line that runs through Cornwall to St Ives. So we definitely want to ride along that. But once done, the plan is to walk back to Marazion along St Michael's way, right across the Penwith peninsular and then back to Penzance along Long Rock beach. On both the North and South coasts there are beautiful sandy bays and when you climb up, you can see both sides at the same time!
Couple all that with the excellent brew pub that is the Star Inn at Crowlas, then you have the recipe for an rather good day out.
However, I don't know the way. What I need is a local guide...
...welcome Paul to the channel. The man with all the local route knowledge and many lesser known facts (mostly cos he made them up) about the countryside and the people of Penwith. Have we discovered a TH-cam star in the making, or just some chancer from Derbyshire who now lives in the arse-end of nowhere? That's for you to judge...
There's also eating of pasties, and to quote Paul - "that's civilisation, wrapped in pastry, right there"
A special thank you to Paul, my special guest. He made doing the walk and editing the video afterwards such immense fun. You can only imagine the gems that had to be left on the cutting room floor in the need for at least some kind of brevity...

Great video. I did it in the opposite direction in 2018. Fantastic views from Trencrom hill. I was actually also up there a year ago in January 2023 when the area was covered in a thin layer of snow. And that was magical. It looks like the signposting has improved a bit since 2018. Thank you for sharing. Really enjoyable 🤩

Oh that was just perfect, wasn`t it. Loved it, thanks, and pleased to see you hunted down a beer - you`d definitely earned it. Your buddy Paul is a hoot :D
Crikey, punk, yes, haha. I had green and pink hair. Much fun!

Oh thank you. Yes. It turned out very well. I bet you can imagine how much chat and mucking about ended up on the cutting room floor. Paul is most definitely a hoot. Time spent with him is never dull 😀
Glad to hear some more punk/railway crossover people are out there!

Shout out to Paul from Orlando. I tried to do that walk and got lost. I think I turned right just past the White Hart and ended up losing the trail on a road probably near the Marazion Marshes. Then decided to back track to Crowlas for a pint of Scilly Stout. Just subscribed to Johnny's channel.

thanks Jim! Best wishes to Orlando!
That little cut through as you cross the main road at Crowlas to get to Marazion Marshes really was not well signposted, so I was pleased Paul knew what he was doing.
And it is very hard to move on once you're at The Star

Another great video, Johnny 👍 Paul’s a real font of local knowledge, and clearly a great travelling/walking companion 😅 Would you be up for having a comparison on a future Ride Out Walk Back? More than happy to chip in for the odd pint or two!

Beautiful train journey and walk back. Paul's map (and local knowledge) was quite good. ;) I think next year we may have to do a trip to Devon and Cornwall. It's on the "bucket list" but is moving rapidly up a few spots.

As I say in the video, I've been down to Penwith many times and it is always a delight. It gets very crowded in the summer, but you really do not have to go far before you leave the crowds behind, just like on this walk!
If we do another together, then I will be subcontracting the map drawing to Paul again. 😃

Terrific video, actually very relaxing to watch. Have to be honest always considered Cornwall to be an area swamped with tourists (similar to Inverness area), don’t look like that in your video. Your walk looked like my idea of heaven :)

      @JohnnyHooverTravels  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well I suppose in common with many places, if you walk a bit you can escape the crowds. It really is a special place with lots of other routes.
Haha I remember when I was in Inverness last year I messaged my wife to say I'd found 5 places to buy a kilt, but there's nowhere to buy a pint of milk! And yes, it was very touristy. Beautiful though.

Great to watch. We've walked up to Knills monument loads and always wondered about carrying on! How far is the walk, please, and is it well signposted?
    Cheers 🍺

Paul says in the video that we did 11/12 miles to the pub and then another 4 to Marazion and back to Pz.
St Michael's Way is well signposted although Paul did go wrong at one point (hence the fence climb).
My legs were tired by the end. You could just do Trencrom and then walk to The Star and hop on a bus.
