    When Canon puts out a camera it seems like people always complain about the specs, then over time those same people say the camera is one of best on the market. These specs wars are getting ridiculous. You really don't know how good a camera is until you've had a chance to use the camera for several months and really learn the camera in my opinion.

      From what in can tell, Canon has listened to feedback on the R5 and this looks to be a decent upgrade. Hope the R7 ii gets the same treatment. More speed, better af (would love eye control lol even v1), stacked sensor, higher bitrate and probably a faster card type (although I would be annoyed if I were in need of redundancy). I need a battery grip too along with fixing all the beta firmware such as pre capture. Add in the Ai upscale too. I might have got carried away and Canon will charge £2k. Although I think Canon underestimated the R7 user who used one of the previous 90d/7d line bodies and had high expectations. All my opinion.

    Thanks for the first look! I'm still not entirely convinced by the R5II (the R1 is a crying shame als a flagship in my opinion), but what could defiintely influence my decision is how the R5II performs in low light versus the R5. Could you perhaps do a side by side comparison with the R5 in a future video once you have the R5II available for yourself? I'd especially be interested how the higher ISO-numbers (from 6400 up to 25.600) compare with each other since there is a limit to what DxO can solve when it comes to details in regard to the R5. I'd also be curious how much more shots can be taken on average with an R5 with the new battery compared to the old R5 battery. Looking forward to future videos!

      Simple: 24 MP. Fine to prioritize speed over MP, but don't say it's the best camera you've got with an accompanying price. It is simply too little for this day and age, especially since there is already an R3 which is way too similar to this camera.

    • @kernzilla

      @@naturebylennart ah. well, it's the best camera they have for everyone in the sports/journalism is prob whats going unsaid here. but not a surprise either though right? not sure they've ever produced flagship with *lot of MP. end of the day, everyone has different MP needs; for me, 20 is plently for i just prefer the better low light performance and rarely do any major cropping. in the instance i do need some resolution, the LR SuperRes works just fine, and get to keep my workflow & and manage 1/2 the data. but, I also overly-prioritize my lens budget over bodies to make sure i'm getting it right in-camera.
      but, it's also hard to be overly critical of a camera that isn't for sale yet, too.

    Thanks for the insights Jan. I'll probably end up purchasing the R5 MK II eventually, but when I factor in all the extra costs of battery grip, batteries, cards etc, I'm having trouble justifying the expenditure at this stage. In the main, I'm really achieving the results that I currently need with my current R5 and R7.
    I'm delaying my final decision until I've read a few more reviews as they come out. Am particularly interested in how effective the BSI sensor is in reducing rolling shutter in stills. Hopefully, Canon will publish a manual soon that I can have a look at as well.

  • @wanderland_xyz
    @wanderland_xyz หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    I'm in on the R5II, mainly for the improved AF--that's really my main frustration with my R5, especially compared to the R7 and R6II. My aging eyes will also welcome the larger and brighter EVF! For me the rest is bonus, or interesting to try out--eye-control AF, stacked sensor, 14-bit in electronic shutter (which is what I usually use when shooting wildlife), improved IBIS, and a (hopefully) usable pre-capture mode. I presume it will also remove the R5's electronic shutter mode quirks like no bracketing and 0.5-second maximum exposure. I'm excited to get my hands on it!

    • @adrianduncan8355
      @adrianduncan8355 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Are saying your R5 AF doesn't perform as well as the R7? I had heard the opposite. I assumed that it was because the R5 had a faster processor? I only have the R7 and find it amazing "mostly". But it does often show me eye lock when I know it isn't. Having said that the AF has allowed me to captur so many shots I wouldn't otherwise have got.

    • @wanderland_xyz
      @wanderland_xyz หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@adrianduncan8355 The R5 is 2 years older than the R7, so its AF isn't quite as up to speed technologically. That's not to say it's bad, of course! I have found the R5 does better than the R7 in low light, but for subjects that are smaller, moving, or partly obscured by foliage, the R7 is better at finding and keeping a lock on the subject. The R6 Mark II has been Canon's gold standard for AF since it was released, so if the R5II is even beyond that, I expect to be very happy!

    • @RogerZoul
      @RogerZoul หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have the r7 and then R5. The R7 has a more advanced AF system, more flexible too. But when the metal hits the road, I’d rather have the R5 because the R7 will miss. It may show it is locked onto an eye, but when you get the photo it is not in focus. Also, the R7 has too much shutter slap so the MS is out. The FCES is better, but it still shows a lot of shake in the VF when shooting. The ES has such bad rolling shutter than many flying shots are unusable (for me, anyway). But for stills, or perched birds, the R7 is great on a fast lens. It gives very detailed images and the 1.6x crop factor means you get a lot of pixels on the subject. So, that is how I use my R7. Perched birds. I do get some decent shots of flying birds sometimes, too, but that is a lot more risky. The R5 gives me many more shots I can use, but anything flying in front of a fence or building on the R5 is ruined, due to rolling shutter. So, hopefully, the R5M2 is going to solve that problem. that is the first thing I will test on it, and if it is not up to snuff, it is going back.

      @@RogerZoul Is risking ruined shots because of rolling shutter on birds in flight still better than just running mechanical shutter? Obviously less fps, but no worries about rolling shutter. 12fps is still quite a bump up from a 7D2 or 90D for a first mirrorless camera. Seems like they should have just left off electronic shutter on the R7 it's so bad. They need to fix the wandering focus on the R7 for sure, lots and lots of complaining about that, and rightfully so.

    Thanks for the insights! When doing AF tests please add a scenario when the bird head is down, like below the body level. Shooting with R5 I noticed that the AF presumes that the head of the bird is usually highier than the body and in many circumstances it tries to find the eye by looking at the the highier part of the bird body, regardless of the fact that the eye it was tracking is still perfectly visible, but the head is somewhere down there... This frustrated me a lot... Many thanks

  • @Mike_in_Louisiana
    @Mike_in_Louisiana หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I guess that the new R5ii BSI sensor will increase the dynamic range and lower noise at higher iso. So that's some significant improvement.
    Also, the stacked sensor's quicker data reads will improve AF to some extent.
    The BSI's light gathering efficiency paired with the stacked sensor read speeds may significantly improve low light AF. It may bring the RF800 f/11 and RF600 f/11 up to full-frame AF instead of the limited AF box area.
    The hot-shoe is now updated too. A wireless microphone is now an option.
    However, $4,400 is a hard pill to swallow for these conveniences.
    If Canon added a full-size USB port, dual CF express card slots, an option to order the R5 in a configuration without the low-pass filter (e.g. R5ii-r & R5ii-rs) and a tilt-swing-swivel back panel, I would be gobsmacked.
    But if people already are happy with the R5i, then the $4,400 savings will buy a lot of R-lenses.
    Tough call here.

    8000 euros for the R1 in Ireland, it's a sports photography camera. No way I will be buying it. Thanks for your insight Jan. Looking forward to the new content with the R5 Mark II.
    Not sure I get all the drama around the R1. It's pretty much exactly the camera that everybody should have expected and of course it's similar to the R3. That was the point of the R3. Canon needed to put out a pro mirror-less body as a test bed for new tech but wasn't confident that it could best the 1DX Mark III they had just released. Also, they couldn't afford to disrespect IDX3 users by immediately releasing a replacement flagship.
    So, they release an R"3", get a few years of experience to work out the bugs and now they are confident enough to release a updated version that they can confidently label an R1 and call it their flagship. No conspiracy. No hidden agenda. No drama. Just normal business practices. It's not a perfect camera for my purposes but I'm not the target market.

    Still would love to see a higher Megapixel Version of the R5. Something like a "R5II S" for Landscape with less Video functionality or FPS. I also think that they simply needed something AI for the presentation. Both the Upscaling and Noise Reduction within the Body simply doesn´t make any sense to me when the result is a JPEG. Also not a big Fan of the again new type of battery to get the full functionality of the camera. I think they made too much compromises to fit in the 8K video stuff in the R5 II like Vent Holes or the new grip without additional buttons.... Would love to see a separation in the future like the R5/R5 C.

    Great video again, Jan.
    Although I'm still very happy with my R5, it looks like the R5 II has ticked all the wishlist boxes after all and adds features on top, only a few had on their screen. It might be worth upgrading, if someone can reliably produce photos with it, that were not possible before. My hopes are pinned on the autofocus, pre-burst and the promised dynamic range. But if someone is just starting out in serious bird and wildlife photography, I don't see why they should choose an R5II (with some expensive 400, 600, 800 big white lens) over a combination like a Z8 with a 600 PF which is more affordable and delivers the same, perhaps more. Hopefully the following tests will show. An R1 has apparently been developed for a limited clientele and is unlikely to find a buyer among nature photographers, unlike the Z9.

    I was a little surprised / bummed that "with a stacked sensor" their would be any rolling shutter at all ? I guess some of folks I've heard from about this were wrong to say, a stacked sensor would completely eliminate this. Didn't hear you mention this, but I'd have to assume... The original R5 freaking killed me with that. If I were looking for a new FF body, and had an extra $5K laying around, I guess Id have to buy the R5 Mk II, but I'd trade you an R5 Mk II for an R7 Mk II straight across ;) Just SO much more useful for my shooting.

    When the first speculative specifications for the R1 were indicating a very high Megapixel count, that made a good deal of sense, given the competition of the A1and the Z9, both of which are high megapixel flagships. At that point, I figured that a camera like this one would come out later, as the R3 Mark II. Even when the speculations switched to a 30 or 30+ mega-pixel camera, I still thought there was room for an R3 II, possibly with a global shutter to compete with the A9III. But this camera would seem to quash any chance of an R3II. The R3 appears to be a one-off technology prototype for the R1, the same way the film EOS 3 tested tech for the EOS 1 series. So the 45 point AF system ended up in the 1V (and would survive into the digital world with the 1D and 1DS series), while the eye-controlled AF reached a dead-end, not to be resurrected (in a much improved form) with the R3.
    As for me, cameras in this price-range are outside of my reach. That being said, I think that Canon is communicating to its professional sports photographers and that might be leading to a certain conservatism, in terms of resolution, with high speed shooting and small file size (for rapid uploading to a news service) taking precedence. It's also why the 1DX series was limited to 20MP and why they stuck to a DSLR in 2020 for the 1DX Mark III. Pure speculation on my part, but I think it's reasonable.
    Canon seems to be trying to do two things simultaneously by announcing the R1 and the R5 Mark II at the same time. Satisfying their pro sports photographers with the R1, while providing the R5 Mark II to those who want both high resolution AND high performance. Only time will tell if this gamble pays off, but it seems to be a reasonable attempt to satisfy two disparate groups of photographers/videographers.

    I agree with some other comments... the R1 should have been the R3 Mark II. The R1 should have been at least 60MP.
    The R5 Mark II is a nice, but not huge update to the R5. Canon did a good job refining the R5 II, compared to the original. They also are charging $400 US more for it, than they did for the R5 at its introduction... $4299 versus $3899. A ten percent increase.
    As I understand it, with uncompressed RAW you will only get about 3 seconds shooting with the electronic shutter at 30 fps. Reportedly using the pre-shoot feature will also cause the camera to hit the buffer wall even faster... the bottleneck being the SD memory card (if recording RAW to both cards). Maybe Canon should have put two CFExpress card slots in the R5 II, like they did the R1 and R3.
    I will be waiting for the R7 Mark II and am hoping Canon will give it more "normal" control layout (same as the R5 II, etc.) and make it compatible with the battery grips those cameras use. They also need to improve readout speed (reduce rolling shutter) and upgrade the AF.
    If Canon does right by the R7 II, they will be able to charge more for it. Remember, the R7 was introduced at a price $400 US *less* than the 7D Mark II... which sold like mad! I'm convinced buyers would pay more... but only if they get a more pro-orented APS-C camera in the R7 Mark II. A truly pro quality Canpn APS-C camera would be an exclusive among the "big three"... leapfrogging their competition (much as Nikon did with their D200, which led to their D300 & D500)

    The R1 looks like an R3 Mark II, rather than a flagship camera. Lucky for Canon more people will buy the R5 Mark II. The R1 is well behind the Nikon Z9 and Sony A1, which are better all round cameras and superior to the R1 in most respects. I stopped buying Canon flagship cameras some years ago and nothing today would make me start again.

    R1 = R3m2
    R3 full retail price was a rip off.

    How is Canon allowing a hard buffer and even a slight rolling shutter on the R5ii? That's disappointing to me and a big surprise that both tech issues were not resolved. However, Pre-capture is a big bonus but if it means getting to a hard buffer earlier its a great start but a premature finish. As for the R1. Why have an R1 and R3?

      Yes it’s an odd one. It seems like canons buffer issues are somehow systemic. I wonder if it is related to how the read/write works. Not sure, but something is holding them back a lot compared to Sony and Nikon

      @@jan_wegener I really want to get some more serious Canon gear but if other manufacturers are better then my Canon loyalty will be truly tested. 🤞

    I honestly don't think I'll upgrade from my R5 to the R5 mark II. I bought my camera in a store for $3000 when it came out and I find it difficult to find this latest camera at that price. I value the new camera's AF system, the elimination of 30 minutes of recording, and the pre-shooting. Not many more than that. I miss high resolution photos in raw files.

    there's pros and cons to this release, but gotta say the EVF and price point of the R1 is extremely attractive to me.

    As a Nikon shooter, these releases are not for me. That said, I have plenty of Canon shooting friends. I haven't polled them yet, but after watching a number of "in-depth" pre-views (on pre-release beta version software) there are a number of things that stand out here. 1st: The marketing strategy of Canon here is less clear that I would have thought. Rather than aim at other flagships like the Sony A1, A9iii, and Nikon Z9 and Z8, Canon has brought out a more expensive (for the technology) and equal or slightly less capable flagship camera in the R1. While the body is super well laid out, and the bells that go with it are nice, the ability of the sensor (which is why one would buy this) seems a little behind the other "big two". The lower MP of the R1 also means that people like yourself are more likely to go for the updated R5 - which as some of the comments suggest - does feel a bit like a higher MP R3. Overall, I think based on specs and shooting experiences of those with pre-production cameras - these offerings are not going to move people from other brands - but likely make Canon R5 shooters happy with the upgrade. As for someone choosing a new mirrorless company to buy into - I'm not sure it's going to sway new purchasers either. With Canon staying as the least "value" or bang for buck, you have to wonder now where they are going. I use to say this about Nikon, but over the last 3 years, things have changed. I hear that the AF in video is not as good (in early pre-release) as people wanted and not as sticky as they wanted. There are also a number of features that seem are so unique in their use-case (like the pre-capture of the R3) that it left some wondering "Why spend time developing this?". Time will tell. I wish for my Canon friends that these amazing cameras are significant upgrades for them. R5 Canon users will likely upgrade. As for the R1, Canon has made a relative niche camera with little buzz or "wow" concepts when it comes to the sensor (i.e. Sony A9iii with global shutter). The inclusion of eye controlled AF may be a very nice addition, but that was already present in the R3. Sports ID specific tracking, I believe, has been done by Panasonic for nearly a decade. The R1 is likely to be a terrific for sports/action camera - and maybe that's what Canon aimed (at the Olympics) had in mind. As for a clear direction for the company, this is feeling a bit bipolar (as with the launch event) - giving reviewers only a short time (hours) to shoot with two new cameras in pre-production mode - in Arizona in July (with 105 degree heat). Even with all the time Canon has been working on the R1, the launch seems rushed for the Olympics. Best wishes and hope to see what you think when you get the camera in hand. Just curious where (for Canon and Nikon) are the zebras in stills? Is this technology for stills patented by Sony?

    I'm not a Canon shooter but the only thing impressive about the new R1 is the autofocus. I suspect the R1 will have the best AF of any camera. Regards the R5mkII I'd say having a fully stacked sensor is the highlight but other than that if I shot the R5mkI I'm not sure anything else would compel me to upgrade. Overall both are a bit disappointing given how long Canon have been working to make improvements. If its 4 more years until we see a R1mkII & R5mkIII, Sony and Nikon will likely have pulled way ahead with their forthcoming Z9II and A1mkII.
