I feel enormously accomplished. I’ve read a whopping TWO of these: Schiff’s Cleopatra and Augustine’s Confessions. Love the starter kits. Can’t wait for more.
Thank you so much for this starter kit Steve. I've read biographies all my life and love them as a genre, and lately I have started reading biographies of the ancients, so your list is invaluable. You have also given me things to look for in their authors that I may have overlooked before. I have on hand The Hemlock Cup, so I will start with that.
I definitely agree with you Steve. Nothing beats biographies! Great starter kit- I'm pretty new to making and seeking out these videos so I can't wait to watch more.
Thanks so much for this list! They all sound so fascinating to me! I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for the books! I really love your starter kit videos!
Couldn't be happier that you recommended 'Constantine and Eusebius'. My tiny little rural library does not have this, of course. BUT, I'll be able to get this through an inter-library loan. Thanks again for this recommendation. =D
I was looking through your videos to see if you had recommendations for a Winston Churchill biography and ran across this, can't wait for future videos in the series which I obviously hope include Churchill ;)
Well, it'll be hard for a series like this to EXCLUDE somebody like Churchill, right? But we won't have to worry about that until reach the 21st century ...
I can second a couple of these recommendations. I have a small collection of Plato called The Trial and Death of Socrates that contains four dialogues; Euthyphro, Apology, Crito and Phaedo. It's one of my favorite books. I'm under the impression that there are contemporary references to Socrates. Aren't there records of his service during the Peloponesian War? Also the Landmark Caesar is great. Like all the Landmark books the maps and illustrations are very good. For fans of Julius Caesar, like me, It's worth the price.
I wonder if egomaniacs of 2018 would use the title Eyes on the Prize for their autobiography? 😊😉 This is so great, Steve, I’m excited about digging into some of these! Thank you!
Loved this video. I came away from this with a healthy reading list. Do you have any recommendations for biographies on Scipio? Love your channel, btw.
Steve is the author on Attila the Hun by John Man and not Paul Man? I saw a book on Amazon by John Man with respect to Attila the Hun. I didn't see one for Paul Man.
Thank you Steve! Could I ask for another characteristic? Beautiful prose! I don’t see myself reading a dry history of Atila, maybe because I’m Latina but I need some flavor added in.
Augustine of Hippo by Peter Brown is my absolute favorite biography!! Brown is THE scholar you need for Late-Antique/Early Christian studies :) He is my scholarly idol. Read Brown's biography, people. It's absolutely worth it. Possidius' Life of Augustine might also be worth a read. He knew Augustine personally.
The Digest of Roman Law? Really?!?! Not even law students can tackle that. I don't know what kind of audience you're talking to, but generally speaking, for any sample of TH-cam audience that I can think of, and especially for an English-speaking audience, that's an extremely impractical recommendation.
I can’t find if you’ve ever continued this series. If not, I’d love to see more recommendations for other time periods.
Would love to see this starter kit continue!

Brilliant! I love this. These starter kits are amazing and I thank you for doing them. I can't wait for part 2!
Will you ever continue this series? I would be very interested in your recomendations for other time periods!

Love the starter kits! You make even topics I wouldn't gravitate towards very interesting, keep em coming.
Oh, please do go on to the Middle Ages. It’s my favorite historical
period to learn about.
I definitely agree with you Steve. Nothing beats biographies! Great starter kit- I'm pretty new to making and seeking out these videos so I can't wait to watch more.
Thank you!
Um...800-page summary?
The hell? I thought exactly the same thing.
I'm sure he meant word
Marcus I know. It was just comical how he was making it easy, and then...
Love this starter kit!!!! this was a great idea. I cannot wait to see part two of this.
Great starter kit. If you ever come across anything about Julius Caesar or Cleopatra that would be great. Thanks so much for sharing.
Just bought the Arthur Kahn book on Caesar per your recommendation. Looks like it will be a nice addition to my Caesar collection. Thanks for the tip
Thanks so much for this list! They all sound so fascinating to me! I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for the books! I really love your starter kit videos!
I get the feeling that you want us all to read Plutarch... Also it goes without saying, MORE STARTER KITS!
Um, will you do part 2? 👀

They need to add one more feature on BookTube right next to Like. Let's call it a Bear-hug.
Very nice! Let me know if you find any biographies of Egyptian pharaohs.
I so much enjoy your videos plus I LEARN from them!
Great video, can't wait for more.
Biograhy is my favorite also. I love youchanne, but make sure all the sound is a great as this one. Stay blessed.

Biography has never been something I have read on a regular basis, but that changes in 2020! I think I will read The Nature of Alexander first.
Loved this video. I came away from this with a healthy reading list. Do you have any recommendations for biographies on Scipio? Love your channel, btw.
Well, for me the best Scipio book is STILL the one by Liddell Hart - but 21st century readers may find it a bit on the dry side!
I don't fear dry. I had to read many psychiatric research journals for graduate school. Haha. Thanks for the suggestion.
But where is the starter kit? Where is the list?
YES Thank you!!! This is fantastic
Steve is the author on Attila the Hun by John Man and not Paul Man? I saw a book on Amazon by John Man with respect to Attila the Hun. I didn't see one for Paul Man.
Yes, sorry!

Is this going to be focussing on just western culture, too?
