I'm going to put this out there: if I recall correctly, Balgruff's housecarl serves him to repay him for something he did for her in the past. She seems to feel she has a life-debt towards him, despite him insisting otherwise, so it is a matter of pride and honor that drives her to serve him, not any binding obligation. And is not honor important to the dunmer?
I think they also grew up together, or at least have known each other since their youth. They claim to be just good friends, but let's be real, they've definitely mashed Dagoths. And I don't see Balgruuf's moon and star running around Dragonsreach. Make what you will of that. Dunmer live a lot longer than men, so owing a life-debt probably isn't that big a deal. Irileth will still be pretty spry and good in a fight by the time Balgruuf is old and frail.

And Irileth is in charge of all power projection, either in defence of the hold or for leverage in diplomacy. indeed, she has a sharp intellect for all matters military and in political intrigue. think about it, every task that Balgruuf has he either delegates to you (assumedly a dunmer...) or Irileth. he is wholely reliant on her, which is his only redeeming quality.

I only go there to become a more powerful Telvanni wizard (which Skyrim has a serious lack of) and to give wipe papers to the malacath who somehow manages to be the only person not involved in incredibly irresponsible experiments. Oh, and because the thing is lead by a dunmer, even if it is a nord institution and he is pretty bad at his job. But what can you do when there aren't enough dunmer around.
I think the thing that gets me the most with this version of Dagoth as opposed to others in the amount of inflection you can give him. Others are very stale and monotone, but this version feels like he’s actually talking to the viewer, not just reading lines
I honestly respect Siddgeir's policy of channeling the holds bandits to conjure up some minerals. If he had his shit together it would have been a 4D chess move. Could have funded the whole war with those mines as it was clear he had an agreement with multiple bandit gangs.
Idk I think Riften is kinda nice if you ignore the rampant thievery. Significantly less run down than 90% of Skyrim and only has slightly more poop than the average location as well as less homless people than Markarth and Windhelm. Heck the thievery is even arguably nicer since the rest of Skyrim has murderous bandits instead of non-murderous thieves. Maven might not be that bad a choice.
Riftens only nice because it's pretty imo, I'd rather live in windhelm or white run, windhelm homeless are only homeless because of the refugees and the town is very cool and connected to morrowind by a quick boat trip, white run is just chill and their Jarl is the best in Skyrim

I actually have a bit of a question. Why didn’t the Dunmer in Skyrim just go to Winterhold? Winterhold needed a rebuilding and more than like 6 citizens total. The Dunmer, fleeing the chaos brought on by the red year, needed a place that would properly accept them or at least not be in a position to refuse. They likely would not have faced the same discrimination if they were in Winterhold, mostly because they would be a majority there and probably be able to properly rebuild the Hold. Not only this, they would also probably be able to vastly improve the College of Winterhold. Also they would likely make the province of Winterhold a mini Morrowind and thereby almost certainly much better. Last but not least there aren’t any Argonians in Winterhold. In Eastmarch the lizards are rightly kept outside the city walls, in Winterhold they aren’t present at all. Sure it’s cold sometimes but Winterhold certainly has a lot of advantages that the Dunmer were in prime position to take advantage of, all while avoiding the discrimination of Ulfric Stormcloak and being well out of the reach of the Mongrel Dogs of the Empire.
For those who don't know math (1 - 1) / 0 = 0 / 0 which is actually "undefined" and not a low number. So Skald is actually as smart as whatever-the-f__k-Skald-says-his-IQ-is. It seems Dagoth can't do a proper math insult. I guess that's what happens when he had the Dwemer do all his engineering work for him, and he shows up afterward to hit something with a hammer.
7:15 actually the Black-Briars have some dunmer ad-mixture, a black-briar scion hooked up with a dunmer in the 2nd era and had a pair of half-blooded twins.
Idgrod, Balgruuf and Bronwulf are probably the best picks tbh. 1) Idgrod is WAY smarter than she looks. Its implied heavily that she uses her "crazy old lady" act to trick people into letting their guard down. She's also pretty humble and tolerant, willing to indulge the Thalmor and the Empire because its simply the better move for her Hold. Even if nobody appreciates it. The only flaws are : A) She's old. Not senile, but even if she was picked, she wouldn't be capable of ruling as High Queen for very long B) Her reputation would work against her as I don't think many would be happy with the representative of Skyrim acting the way she does. Plus, you could argue that she wouldn't even compete. As her whole thing is staying low and making others *think* they're smarter and more capable than her. 2.) Balgruuf is a jack of all trades, master of none. He's humble, generous, loved by his people, is a strong warrior in his own right and usually strives for peace and for everyone to get what they want. But his main flaw is that he is either really indecisive or reckless. Hell, its implied that he would have gotten assasinated *ages* ago if Irileth wasn't shadowing him basically 24/7. His main strength really is his ability to bring the best out of people, helped by the fact that he has, overall, the most consistently capable and trustworthy court members. 3) Bronwulf is basically the most progressive Jarl, stuck in the most *unprogressive* Hold due to the leftover blatant racism of many of Ulfric's Stormcloaks. But he makes long term plans to renovate the Grey Quarter, bring the Argonians into Windhelm proper and crack down on the agressive behaviour of some of the citisens. But what makes him interesting is he openly shared these views *way before* he becomes a Jarl, so this is him just practicing what he preached, on top of being openly against the war. The only problem is that we *really don't* see him actually *rule.* So we don't know if he achieves any of his goals or how competent and/or liked he is.
Idgrod is a pretty believable choice with Empire backing though. If they were to put aside her age, she’d seem to them like a perfect puppet queen. A crazy old lady, who has just enough reason to see the ways being loyal to the Empire can benefit Skyrim in the present. But in the High Queen position, she has to reveal half her cards, while protecting the rest; her mysticism has to be private, while her more political mindset comes out. They install her as a puppet, only for her to reveal that the Crazy Old Lady act was part of her strategising. Now she’s in a position to stand up to action and actually act for Skyrim. After all, in the wake of a rebellion, the Empire needs to be able to put Skyrim to heel and Idgrod would seem like a good option, if Elisif can’t gain the votes in the moot, since its very clear that she’s the intended puppet queen, but for all of the Empire’s machinations, there’s no subtlety to Elisif as a puppet, and it’ll be harder for anyone to get votes behind her, especially since only Maven (for nefarious reasons) and Brina (as an Imperial herself) seem to have any MAJOR loyalty to the Empire. I don’t see Windhelm or Winterhold having much sway, since Brunwulf would still be affected by the fact that Windhelm was the seat of a rebellion, and Winterhold is falling apart. Igmund practically lost the Reach to Forsworn. Siddgeir is so obviously sleazy that he’d never get support from the Jarls. Maven is Maven, Brina isn’t a native to Skyrim. Balgruuf doesn’t feel like he’d accept it, since he seems to have enough issues managing Whiterun and shows no real lust for power. Idgrod stands as arguably the best choice for Skyrim, whilst being a good choice in the Empire’s eyes. But that requires the devs to have any kind of political insight for what both sides would look for.
Elisif is the only Jarl who keeps her position regardless of who wins the war. So I think she will probably be made high queen regardless. Especially since even the stormcloak aligned jarls seem to have mixed feelings on Ulfric.
@@unslaadkrosis3489 I would take Igrod over Maven any day. As high queen that is. She's a rather decent person who can cause a scene in the thalmor embassy for the Dragonborn and might even come to their wedding. She also doesn't get aggro if you're a late stage vampire.
There is that cut quest where Elisif was meant to be assasinated in a second Boethiah quest called Boethiah's Bidding . Erikur would then have become the Jarl if the quest content wasn’t cut. But twhether Erikur would kept his position regardless of who wins the war is something that could go either way. Balgruuf was originally supposed to die in Mephala's quest with his brother (Hrongar) then taking over. There are usuesed lines recorded for Hrongar that involve the civil war and main quest and unsed lines for NPCs in Whiterun talking about him being Jarl too.

I think the thing that gets me the most with this version of Dagoth as opposed to others in the amount of inflection you can give him. Others are very stale and monotone, but this version feels like he’s actually talking to the viewer, not just reading lines

I honestly respect Siddgeir's policy of channeling the holds bandits to conjure up some minerals. If he had his shit together it would have been a 4D chess move. Could have funded the whole war with those mines as it was clear he had an agreement with multiple bandit gangs.
Idk I think Riften is kinda nice if you ignore the rampant thievery. Significantly less run down than 90% of Skyrim and only has slightly more poop than the average location as well as less homless people than Markarth and Windhelm. Heck the thievery is even arguably nicer since the rest of Skyrim has murderous bandits instead of non-murderous thieves.
Maven might not be that bad a choice.
Riftens only nice because it's pretty imo, I'd rather live in windhelm or white run, windhelm homeless are only homeless because of the refugees and the town is very cool and connected to morrowind by a quick boat trip, white run is just chill and their Jarl is the best in Skyrim
Maven is at least better than that silver guy in Markath who lets non-farmtools work in his slave mine.

I actually have a bit of a question. Why didn’t the Dunmer in Skyrim just go to Winterhold?
Winterhold needed a rebuilding and more than like 6 citizens total. The Dunmer, fleeing the chaos brought on by the red year, needed a place that would properly accept them or at least not be in a position to refuse.
They likely would not have faced the same discrimination if they were in Winterhold, mostly because they would be a majority there and probably be able to properly rebuild the Hold. Not only this, they would also probably be able to vastly improve the College of Winterhold. Also they would likely make the province of Winterhold a mini Morrowind and thereby almost certainly much better.
Last but not least there aren’t any Argonians in Winterhold. In Eastmarch the lizards are rightly kept outside the city walls, in Winterhold they aren’t present at all.
Sure it’s cold sometimes but Winterhold certainly has a lot of advantages that the Dunmer were in prime position to take advantage of, all while avoiding the discrimination of Ulfric Stormcloak and being well out of the reach of the Mongrel Dogs of the Empire.
Azura led them to Windhelm. And probably knew they would be hated so it's a form of punishment and test for them

In a serious note Baalgruf is literally the only viable candidate, the rest are literally stupider then a Blind Orc in a bird watch competition

Idgrod, Balgruuf and Bronwulf are probably the best picks tbh.
1) Idgrod is WAY smarter than she looks. Its implied heavily that she uses her "crazy old lady" act to trick people into letting their guard down. She's also pretty humble and tolerant, willing to indulge the Thalmor and the Empire because its simply the better move for her Hold. Even if nobody appreciates it.
The only flaws are :
A) She's old. Not senile, but even if she was picked, she wouldn't be capable of ruling as High Queen for very long
B) Her reputation would work against her as I don't think many would be happy with the representative of Skyrim acting the way she does. Plus, you could argue that she wouldn't even compete. As her whole thing is staying low and making others *think* they're smarter and more capable than her.
2.) Balgruuf is a jack of all trades, master of none. He's humble, generous, loved by his people, is a strong warrior in his own right and usually strives for peace and for everyone to get what they want.
But his main flaw is that he is either really indecisive or reckless. Hell, its implied that he would have gotten assasinated *ages* ago if Irileth wasn't shadowing him basically 24/7.
His main strength really is his ability to bring the best out of people, helped by the fact that he has, overall, the most consistently capable and trustworthy court members.
3) Bronwulf is basically the most progressive Jarl, stuck in the most *unprogressive* Hold due to the leftover blatant racism of many of Ulfric's Stormcloaks.
But he makes long term plans to renovate the Grey Quarter, bring the Argonians into Windhelm proper and crack down on the agressive behaviour of some of the citisens.
But what makes him interesting is he openly shared these views *way before* he becomes a Jarl, so this is him just practicing what he preached, on top of being openly against the war.
The only problem is that we *really don't* see him actually *rule.* So we don't know if he achieves any of his goals or how competent and/or liked he is.
Idgrod is a pretty believable choice with Empire backing though. If they were to put aside her age, she’d seem to them like a perfect puppet queen. A crazy old lady, who has just enough reason to see the ways being loyal to the Empire can benefit Skyrim in the present. But in the High Queen position, she has to reveal half her cards, while protecting the rest; her mysticism has to be private, while her more political mindset comes out. They install her as a puppet, only for her to reveal that the Crazy Old Lady act was part of her strategising. Now she’s in a position to stand up to action and actually act for Skyrim. After all, in the wake of a rebellion, the Empire needs to be able to put Skyrim to heel and Idgrod would seem like a good option, if Elisif can’t gain the votes in the moot, since its very clear that she’s the intended puppet queen, but for all of the Empire’s machinations, there’s no subtlety to Elisif as a puppet, and it’ll be harder for anyone to get votes behind her, especially since only Maven (for nefarious reasons) and Brina (as an Imperial herself) seem to have any MAJOR loyalty to the Empire. I don’t see Windhelm or Winterhold having much sway, since Brunwulf would still be affected by the fact that Windhelm was the seat of a rebellion, and Winterhold is falling apart. Igmund practically lost the Reach to Forsworn. Siddgeir is so obviously sleazy that he’d never get support from the Jarls. Maven is Maven, Brina isn’t a native to Skyrim. Balgruuf doesn’t feel like he’d accept it, since he seems to have enough issues managing Whiterun and shows no real lust for power. Idgrod stands as arguably the best choice for Skyrim, whilst being a good choice in the Empire’s eyes. But that requires the devs to have any kind of political insight for what both sides would look for.
Elisif is the only Jarl who keeps her position regardless of who wins the war. So I think she will probably be made high queen regardless. Especially since even the stormcloak aligned jarls seem to have mixed feelings on Ulfric.

@@unslaadkrosis3489 I would take Igrod over Maven any day. As high queen that is. She's a rather decent person who can cause a scene in the thalmor embassy for the Dragonborn and might even come to their wedding. She also doesn't get aggro if you're a late stage vampire.
There is that cut quest where Elisif was meant to be assasinated in a second Boethiah quest called Boethiah's Bidding . Erikur would then have become the Jarl if the quest content wasn’t cut. But twhether Erikur would kept his position regardless of who wins the war is something that could go either way.
Balgruuf was originally supposed to die in Mephala's quest with his brother (Hrongar) then taking over. There are usuesed lines recorded for Hrongar that involve the civil war and main quest and unsed lines for NPCs in Whiterun talking about him being Jarl too.

Good Lord Dagoth Ur, I've been looking into the business of breeding farm tools to make them better than they are as of now, so that they would be more compliant, capable and perhaps have a more variety of uses. I require your advice upon such an endeavor, though I would be happy to have any advice from any fellow Dunmer with experience in such matters.
