Fun fact: I rode across this bridge in the 90s when i was riding a Steam locomotive excursion. Also, this took two separate days to film (missed the train the first time). Thats why i'm wearing two different shirts.
Another great video Jay. It brought back memories of when I was about 12 in 1983. My dad's 2nd wife grew up and lived in Hop Bottom, not far from the bridge. 5 of us went for a walk up on the bridge one Sunday afternoon for something to do. We got about half way across and I remember asking my step mom if it was true if you put your ear on the rail that you can hear a train coming. She said yes, so I knelt down looking towards the Scranton end of the bridge, put my ear on the rail... and nothing. All of a sudden she yells "TRAIN!" I said, "I don't hear anything" I just happen to look towards the Binghamton end of the bridge and sure enough... there's a train. We had to run to one of the piers where there's little dug outs in the wall that gives you a safe place to go if a train does come. All I remember is the roar of the 3 diesel engines, the clack of the wheels on the rail joints and the entire bridge shaking. It was an awesome and also terrifying experience. So after the train passed, there was a caboose on the end and we hear the conductor yell "Hi Ray! How are ya?" to my dad. It was a guy he used to work with at RCA in Dunmore that left to work on the railroad.
