  • This is the LONGEST ABANDONED Train Bridge that I ever crossed!
    Hey everyone, in this video myself, RJ & Jake venture out to locate and cross an abandoned train bridge. Once arriving at the location, it wasn't what I expected. Although the rails are gone, the bridge has a solid floor which made crossing a bit easier. On our way across we discovered signs of another bridge and were hit with some strong winds. Once across, we discovered that there is even more to this location and research will explain what we found. So come along with us as we cross and explore the Longest Abandoned Train Bridge that we ever found. Enjoy

      I did notice that the Stop Sign reads; "Private Crossing". Could it be that the land on the other side of the tracks which is private uses that bridge as a way of travel to and from somewhere?? Why else would an old trestle have a concrete floor?? Only reason would be for small trucks or atv vehicles to travel on?

    That is an absolutely amazing find! The existing bridge is impressive in its own right, then finding the remnants of the other concrete arch bridge was a nice bonus. I appreciate the old photos you were able to find and share too. My wish for that bridge would be that they convert it to a rail trail that we can bike across.

    I never watch a video over 15:00 long but I watched this start to finish. What a wonderful find. It breaks my heart to see such magnificent structures abandoned and never be used again for the purpose of what they were built for. I am an abandoned railroad junkie and every time I drive next to an old narrow gauge line and see all the hard work of shoveling massive hills out and filling deep ravines by hand in the 1800’s/early 1900’s and that work Is being reclaimed and taken over by nature to be almost unrecognizable any more. Same thing with all of the hard work put into these bridges. Especially the concrete bridge of 1911. Such hard backbreaking work that most people cant even begin to appreciate today.

    Great vid, thanks for posting! I walked this bridge once myself way back in the 80's. Old RDG Catawissa Branch. Tower or Shack on the PRR/PC/D&H side was called Norca, (North Catawissa). Erie Lackawanna side was Rupert Yard, small but important interchange point for RDG RR until 1976.

    Absolutely amazing! That bridge is enormous and then a bonus bridge! I love abandoned railroad stuff like this. I didn’t think the bridge was going to be so solid. I’d thought it’d be see thru like in between the ties and all rickety and I’d be like nope nope nope lol

    That paved piece is for highrail vehicles to put on and set off the tracks. The active line was the former Pennsylvania Railroad Wilkes-Barre Branch and the abandoned right of way is the Reading Catawissa Branch. There were two diamonds where the lines crossed. The diamond at the bridge was called NORCA (North Catawissa). There was another diamond just south of town along Catawissa Creek where the Reading Main crossed the Pennsylvania Railroad Rock Glen Branch to Tomhicken called RedPen (Reading Pennsylvania). The active line is now the Norfolk Southern Sunbury Line and is dark territory for most of the southern portion so trains move with written track authorities from the dispatcher because there are no signals to govern movement. Even today the name NORCA has been used on the track authorities as a copying location.

I have crossed the Susquehanna River by car many times when I was a youngster we have relatives all over Pennsylvania, I grew up in Upstate NY, near Utica. We had many old rail lines such as this one. I loved the drone footage as it really helps to get a good perspective of the size and of the views that rail passengers would have had back when this was an operating rail line. ALSO, MADE ME THINK OF ALL THE HARD WORKING MAN THAT WORKED SO HARD BUILDING IT AND NOW THEY ARE ALL DIED! MAY THEY ALL REST IN PEACE!
      THE PHOTOS AT THE END ARE JUST GORGEOUS! YOU ARE SUCH A GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING SUCH A WONDERFUL, SHORT STORY & PHOTOS!

    Wow, what a monster of a bridge! The first time you showed the elongated pillars that extended out from under the junctures of the spans, I tried to remember what they're called. Although I've been a model railroader since the early '50s and a general "railfan" even before that, it took me quite a while to dredge up the name: "Piers!" What really impressed me was the drone footage showed the entire long bridge was skewed, built at a slant to the river, rather than straight across. This showed plainly from above, as the piers are aligned to parallel the river banks and water flow and the side trusses are staggered so the ends rest at an angle to each other. I can't remember, did you tell the number of spans in the information you put on the screen. The thing is truly impressive. Thanks for showing it to us, Jay.

      9 through truss spans

    • @oldenweery7510
      @oldenweery7510 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JPVideos81 Thanks, Jay: none through truss spans, crossing the Susquehanna River at an angle---Wow! BTW, I forgot what they called it, but many railroad bridges had concrete floors, with regular ballast and tie roadbed over them. My guess is that it was original to the structure, not a refit at a later date. There were probably advantages to, maybe less vibration or ease of track maintenance. Any civil engineers reading this have "the skinny?" IMHO, the scenery is beautiful, bridge and all (but of course, I'm a train nut and prejudiced...)

    Great views! I’m from NEPA, my friends and I used to party at an old firehouse that was mostly underground similar to the bridge towards the end of the video. It’s a concrete building, I believe 1909 or 1911, which along with the name of the town was carved into the concrete building itself. It was off of a set of train tracks and in the woods. It’s been a long time but I’m thinking of taking a walk to see if it’s still there. Anyway, great video. The views were awesome!
