- Super Bowl 36 in 2002 was the last NFL game that Pat Summerall and John Madden would call together as a team. Pat Summerall retired in 2002, at the same time John Madden's contract with FOX expired and moved to Monday Night Football on ABC. Summerall would later return to call select games with other partners on a fill-in basis for FOX.
Nothing like the sound of Pat Summerall's voice in the Fall. I still miss it.
I loved his touchdown calls: Touchdown, Niners! Touchdown, Steelers! Touchdown, Redskins! Never over the top but never undersold.
Yup Keith Jackson-CFB
Marv Albert-NBA
Joe Buck's Got a Pretty Whiny Voice Compared to Jack...
Wow you took me back to my childhood. That was a beautiful time

These men are proudly associated with these sports!
Fukin seriously...
RIP Pat Summerall and John Madden, the greatest sports broadcasting duo in history.
So good
Yup
Yes they were the best. Then after is Madden and Michaels. Then Michaels and Cris. Sad that al michaels and cris colinsworth finally split up forever too. The colinsworth slide into michaels snf booth was always cool. jack buck will always be my favorite announcer with my grandfather watching baseball especially the kirk gibson call.. never really realized how meaningful announcers were
Amen to that, buck and aikman can’t match them.
No debate
Greatest NFL commentating duo of all-time.
no doubt some of the greatest sundays and holidays listening to these 2 guys commentating with pop's
Pat and John will always rank up with Joe and Troy, Jim and Phil, Tracy and Allie, Dick and Merlin, Al, Frank and Dan, Frank, Howard and Don, Mike, Tony and Ron, JR and The King, Mauro, Al and Paulie, Mike (Goldberg) and Joe (Rogan) and Mike (Patrick), Joe (Theismann) and Paul!
And Kaylee Hartung and Samantha Ponder, Karina Smirnoff and Edyta Sliwinska, Renee Young and Cathy Kelley, Chelsie Hightower and Lacey Schwimmer, Sharna Burgess and Peta Murgatroyd, Lisa Guerrero and Leeann Tweeden, AJ Lee and Kaitlyn, Torrie Wilson and Stacy Keibler, Megan Skaggs and Kellie Wilson, Miriam McDonald and Cassie Steele, Ashton Shepherd and Tiffany Thornton, Sophia Bush and Bethany Joy Lenz, Kelly Vrooman and Michele Lepe (a.k.a. Nina), Nicole Briscoe and Lisa Kerney, Rachel Bilson and Mischa Barton and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as well!
He was my great grandfather, I was 7 when he died
Don't forget Camila and Lauren and Ashley and Vanessa too!
Hopefully they are still doing more games together now. RIP John and Pat.
Maddens eulogy for Pat was heartbreaking. They were family. They were brothers. Rip Pat
Back then, Sunday afternoons could never be complete without “Pat ‘n John”. There will never be another football broadcast team quite like these legends.
Nope! I'm glad I got to grow up hearing them on Sundays even though my team is an afc team which all our games came on cbs and of course nfc on fox. I would get excited if we played an high power nfc team because we would get John and Pat
What about joe buck and Troy aikmen
@@TexasNationalist1836 You're f*cking kidding me, right?
@@logicaldude3611 no I provided evidence against your claim and you are not providing evidence against my claim so you look like an idiot
@@TexasNationalist1836 lol Evidence? Evidence of what? What the hell are you talking about? You simply suggested Joe Buck and Troy Aikman are as good as Pat and John. I disagree, I thought you were actually joking at first because they are notorious for being so bad. Not Aikman as much, but literally no one can stand Joe Buck.
Madden and Summerall talking about Brady and Vinatieri, now there's some staying power
Damn son.
True!
Chills !
... and two years later, Brady not only STILL doing it, but still playing very good!
RIP John Madden. I'm absolutely devastated that he's gone now, too.
Ik his voice is legendary
Best broadcaster
These two commentated my childhood watching football with my Dad. They're both missed.
Amen to that j. Rose sane here grew up listening to them with my dad. Great memories
Amen
20 years later and they've FINALLY been reunited rip to both legends
One of the great shotguns designs of alltime
God, please give us back Pat Summerall, John Madden, Dick Enberg, Merlin Olsen, Jack Buck and Hank Stram and take Harvey Levin, Perez Hilton, Tucker Carlson, Jamie Spears, Kevin Federline and Vince McMahon instead.
And also, bring back Charlie Jones and George Ratterman and Jim Simpson and Kyle Rote, Ray Scott and Paul Christman and take Lynne Spears, Jamie Lynn Spears, Mark Vincent Kaplan, Jerry Penacoli, Mario Lopez and Victoria Prince. Thanks.
R.I.P Pat summerall :(
Miss these 2 greatly. The nostalgia I just got from listening to these two legends. Miss being a teen in the nineties everything was just more genuine.
What age damn
Two legends gone. RIP fellas.
“Cool as the other side of the pillow”
~Stuart Scott and Pat Summerall
miss both of these gentleman, terribly
Par Summerall was to pro football what Keith Jackson was to college football. Iconic.
And the same can be said for Tracy Wolfson (NFL on CBS) and Allie LaForce (SEC on CBS), although they still host We Need to Talk and report from the sidelines as part of CBS/Turner's annual March Madness tournament package!
Agreed...and also what Vin Scully, Bob Costas & Curt Gowdy, etc. was to baseball.
AND like Marv Albert is to the NBA (basketball)
And Erin Andrews, Samantha Harris, Carrie Ann Inaba, Edyta Sliwinska, Karina Smirnoff, Lacey Schwimmer, Chelsie Hightower, Sharna Burgess and Peta Murgatroyd are to Dancing With the Stars!
And Nicole Briscoe and Lisa Kerney are to SportsCenter, Kaylee Hartung, Molly McGrath and Samantha Ponder (and her daughter Scout) are to ESPN College Football, and Bethany Joy Lenz (as Haley James-Scott) and Sophia Bush (as Brooke Davis-Baker) were to One Tree Hill, Kellie Wilson and Megan Skaggs were to WTVQ-TV and Kelly Vrooman and Michele "Nina" Lepe are to Sprout!
Imagine having people you work with, some of the biggest names in the sport, talk about you like this. That is so special.
This duo will never be repeated, best ever!
Pat was the spirit of the NFL and John was the heart.
Man, hearing his voice brings back so many emotions that I can't even identify. I sure do miss him. R.I.P Pat.
The greatest NFL commentating duo ever. They both can now make calls once again together from heaven. Rest In Paradise to both of them 🙏
R.I.P. Pat Summerall
DarthRaider360 shouldve been the Raiders superbowl
On the passing of John Madden today, I wanted to find a video of John and Pat just shooting like usual. This one was touching, seeing Pat in his final game and John with his touching moment with Pat, was special.
Rest In Peace Coach Madden. A true legend to the NFL, and all of us together.
Now both Pat Summerall & John Madden are calling NFL Games in Heaven. I still Miss watching and Listening to these two Legends on Sundays. NFL Sundays haven't been the same since they both left the booth. They brought Knowledge of the game and class and kept us entertained. R.I.P to both men for setting a standard which many have been trying to follow.
With all the chaos in pro sports today, Pat Summerall's calm, authoritative, professional voice is truly missed. What a player... What a gentleman... What a wonderful human being. They don't make many like him anymore. He is truly missed! RIP Pat
i still miss john and pat's voice of broadcasting
Back when a broadcast was about football not a commercial every 30 seconds
For Tom Brookshire this is Pat Summerall saying so long from Heaven's Gate Stadium
For John Madden and all of us at CBS Sports, this is Pat Summerall saying so long from Candlestick Park in San Francisco, CA.
so does Frank Gifford
don't forget Charlie Jones and Todd Christensen calling up in Football Heaven.
And even Frank Glieber, Don Meredith, Howard Cosell, Bill King, etc.
@@danalong1237 I miss hearing that
Two legends! The best combo ever!
RIP to both of these greats
There will never be another NFL TV announcing team like Summerall and Madden.
Hockey Night in Canada is to that county what Monday night Football is to the U.S.A. I'm glad that the NHL network show the games live in the US.
+Kim Martin i loved Bob Cole and Harry Neale from the 80's. Thats what I grew up with...HNIC and it was always the Habs playing in my neck of the woods
Pat Summerall and John Madden: the trailblazers for future tag teams such as...
Kaylee Hartung and Samantha Ponder
Jenny Slate and Aubrey Plaza
Nicole Briscoe and Lisa Kerney
Samantha Harris and Carrie Ann Inaba
Mauro Ranallo and Corey Graves
Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler
Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan
Vince McMahon and Jesse "The Body" Ventura
Tom Phillips and John "Bradshaw" Layfield
Renee Young and Cathy Kelley
AJ Lee and Kaitlyn
Lisa Guerrero and Leeann Tweeden
Michele "Nina" Lepe and Kelly Vrooman
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
Tracy Wolfson and Allie LaForce
...and many, many others!
I'll give Fox credit for one thing, they were wise and intelligent enough to hire Summerall and Madden to front their NFL coverage, when they first outbid CBS in late 1993. Fox knew that people were going to be skeptical in regards to how they would handle football (up until that point, Fox was primarily known as the "rebel"/"maverick" network in contrast to the more established "Big Three") so they needed Summerall and Madden to lend credibility and to assure viewers that they were serious enough in wanting to cover football "properly".
NEVER
Man I miss Pat and John! Makes me wanna cry thinking about it.
If you wanna cry, watch Madden's eulogy of Summerall, it's very touching and from the heart!
The best buds! RIP JOHN MADDEN AND PAT SUMMERALL
Heaven has the best way to watch any super bowl going forward
We got to see their iconic friendship play out in real time, then we saw them each retire and now they are both no longer with us. Life is fleeting, a humbling yet beautiful reminder to truly cherish the time we have here. RIP to both legends, Madden forever! 🙏💜
If i ever see John Madden walking down the street i will literally tear up and hug this man, what a Legend
I hope that you saw him
everything john is saying to pat here could def be reflected right back at him
Now Pat and John are together in heaven.
they were THE commentator tag team of my youth here in the UK.True Legends.
Now that Mike Goldberg is no longer with the UFC after 20 years and no longer paired with Joe Rogan after 15 years, Goldberg is now with Bellator MMA (along with Mauro Ranallo, a longtime friend of Goldberg) whilst Jon Anik is now the main voice of the UFC. In the words of the late Pat Summerall: "They can take Mike Goldberg away from the UFC, but they can't take away the memories."
But Ranallo wouldn't be with Bellator MMA for long, as he would return to WWE about three months later, causing Ranallo to miss WrestleMania XXXIII, and I hope that one day, Mauro Ranallo will team up with Corey Graves and Nigel McGuinness to form the new RAW broadcast team with Ranallo supporting the babyfaces and Graves and McGuinness supporting the 👠!
Man I grew listening to Pat on Fox.
Madden and pat are both finally gone now. Best duo in the booth. RIP
The Lennon and McCarntney of the NFL. Thank u both for making sundays great in the fall
John, Pat, and yourself seem involved in a conversation as we speak. Unfortunately, you passed away this morning. As a child, I spent countless hours listening to you and Pat while playing Madden games, including the sport of football. When I got off of Madden 22, my friend’s dad freaked out as he found out you had passed away. As the year draws close, a great man has passed away. God knows what to do with legends. As I go to the Alabama and Cincinnati game Friday, it would make me glad if they do a moment of silence for John Madden. The moment makes sense since his legacy will have a lasting impact on every college football player playing football right now because of him. Hopefully, Pat and you get to have a great discussion about it, after which you can finally feel at ease, John.
RIP John Madden
I'm mad that Im too young to have experienced these guys together 😭
Pat summerall and John Madden are in heaven together for first time ever as Friends with each other and they will forever be missed by all of us fans who love to watch football on TV
Best broadcaster all time. Genuinely a true professional. You can't get better.
Pat and John together again...rest in peace fellas.
GOAT announcers I loved their calls since I was a kid.
When people think back on games, of the great wins and great losses through out history, the voice they hear is Pat Summerall...he is THE voice of the NFL. Rest in peace Pat, history will remember you always.
And today's female SportsCasters such as Carolyn Manno, Kathryn Tappen, Kaylee Hartung, Samantha Ponder, Renee Young, Cathy Kelley, Nicole Briscoe, Lisa Kerney, Tracy Wolfson and Allie LaForce, among them, are still adored by children today!
When I was a kid, I didn’t appreciate how amazing Pat Summerall was & he was the perfect straight man for Madden
They were the best commentary Pat Summerall's voice in Madden 2000 "move those sticks"
"Down he goes....couldn't get rid of it in time."
RIP Pat Summerall
Now, John Madden meets up with Pat Summerall, calling games from heaven.
Oh man. These two. What a combo!
the current football announcers that can even come close to Summerall are Al Michael (legacy), Greg Gumbel (class), and Dick Stockton (understanding of football), and all of those guys have been broadcasting almost as long as Summerall was
And since 2012, Tracy Wolfson and Allie LaForce have been leading the sports/children's show hybrid parade!
Pat and John can call all the games they want now in heaven. RIP to both. Certainly the NFL should have a huge moment of silence for John this weekend.
I grew up listening to these two. Rip John
Ask me who the best football team is in football? The best team will always be John Madden and Pat Summerall
Eternally Broadcasting together, Rest In Peace to the best of the best !
His voice from the Press Box at RFK. Such great memories
I had the distinct honor of watching Pat’s last game on TV. Summerall and Madden were why I eventually got into broadcasting.
Pat was overshadowed by John but he was the best. No comparison…
Thanksgivings aren’t the same without Uncle Pat and Uncle John’s voices filling our home..
Pats voice is so refreshing to hear and a treasure forever. And John made him better. Together they are both in heaven broadcasting for God. Class act in deed.....
Watching football with my Dad my friends, was just that much more special hearing both these guys doing what they did best!!!! Educating, entertaining, and making this game we all love that more special!!! Thank you both for the unforgettable memories you have gifted us all!!!
The GREATEST announcing duo ever
"This Week in Pro Football !" My favorite sports show as a kid! My first ever N.F.L. game,November 9,1969 at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. Lions 27 Atlanta Falcons 21! Those highlights, that music, & Pat Summerall with Tom Brooksheir!!
Deep, rich, smooth, understated genius. Summerall made the NFL matter during a broadcast.
Those two were classic. Once in a lifetime! Thank you for posting :)
Played golf with him @ Lake City COUNTRY Club , Florida. Before he had his Surgery, He owned a printing Comp. on Hwy 90 in Lake City Fla. Love to eat lunch & play Golf in the afternoon @ Lake City COUNTRY Club, always looking for a game. One of the nicest gentleman to talk to and play Golf with.
He and Madden were the NFL growing up.
My top 5 play by play/analyst for the NFL are: Summerall/ Madden; Enberg/Olsen; Gifford/Michaels/Dierdorf; Enberg/Macguire/Simms; Patrick/Theismann/ Maguire
i was crying when pat and madden retire i grow up on them and the madden videogame in the 90s
These 2, far and away, are the best broadcast duo in NFL history.
very sad as well that those jerkoffs joe buck and troy aikman are going to break pat summerall and john madden's record though with them getting ready to start their 22nd year together compared to pat summerall and john madden's 21 years together.
RIP to both of these legends. I just became a teenager when they started calling for Fox. Then the Madden video game brought it to another level on PS1. They educated us kids on how to play and understand football. I thank them for my love of football today.
Let's not forget their last season calling together was after 9/11. Such a tough year. They helped unite and heal a nation that year. That's an accomplishment in its own. RIP....
Rip 2 these 2 legends!!! 😭
"Bert and Ernie of football"
They're certainly the precursor to Tracy and Allie!
iamtaylorcad or even like the Smothers Brothers Farm was straight lace there was the comic relief
I grew up watching football as a little boy when all the adults were in the living room smoking, drinking beer and yelling for the browns or the bengals. But what I remember most was listening to these two call the games and getting caught because I laughed so hard every time madden said " doink " Rest in peace gentlemen! You are larger than life and have not and will not be forgotten...
The Duo is now Reunited in Heaven
I had to come here after the passing of John Madden. Now they're back together. RIP to "The Coach" John Madden
The real John Madden football games back in the day rest in peace Pat Summerall number one
This man was the voice of my childhood and why I love football now. The NFL owes a whole lot to him.
RIP Pat Summerall and John Madden
Pat Summerall’s final game turned out to be the beginning of the Patriots dynasty
Man when I grew up in the 80s it seems like when u would think of football you would think of his voice God bless Pat 🙏
Man how I miss that voice on Sundays
true-but I'm an NFC guy(Eagles)
Actually, both Enberg and Scully are now retired and we wish both of them the best!
Go to 3:02. This is the famous Montana to Clark touchdown pass. The CBS TV play-by-play man that day was Vin Scully. That sound bite was from a different game.
Yup.
Madden was THE voice of football growing up. Legend. Now heaven has the best commentary duo calling the games.
Pat and John were the best ever could listen to madden talk football all day long. R.I.P. 😇😢
Without a doubt the greatest of all time. 2 legends that will never be replaced
Summerall and Dick Enberg, best ever
To Pat Summerall & John Madden I’ll never forget my very first memory of you two broadcasting the NFL on Fox while during that Dallas Cowboys At San Francisco 49ers During That Matchup On November 10th, 1996 At Candlestick Park And Where With The Cowboys Winning In OverTime 20 - 17 And Where With saying those very last words in the Broadcast Of it’s over Dallas Wins In OverTime !!!!
😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉
Classy of FOX to include CBS footage.
RIP Pat
66KIMBLE Classy of CBS to allow their footage to be aired on a rival network.
Summerall was the "voice" of the NFL during my childhood.
John and Pat ARE the NFL. We'll never see anything like them again. Ever.
always remember how calm pat was on great plays..R.I.P
Who is here after John Madden passing away?.The best Duo hands down In Sports History although Madden And Al Michael's is right up there but Pat's Voice was so pure.. There will never be another John Madden his voice and knowledge of the game his personality his humor.. He transcends the game and his profession in everyway...RIP John Madden🙏🏻🙏🏻❤
GOATs
Rip my friend
My childhood on Sunday evenings was these two men, I definitely miss them...they were part of the reason I love football. Professional not over the top no gimmicks just called the game right.
The perfect football voice P.S. RIP
