      In the "learning curve" section, one may have the impression that if, by any chance, biters eat up a chunk of your factory (or even the whole of it), less pollution will be produced, so...less attacks, etc. (The aggression will go down)
      Of course, no going back on biters' evolution; it's forward only.
      Another thing I think is why Factorio is so addictive is that every mistake, every design, every fixed mistake is much like a player's signature. So you play it long enough, you'll have 'your signature' everywhere on the map you've explored.

    • @Carbon_Cola
      @Carbon_Cola  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@morienbendinelli1554 Thanks for the comment Morien!
      You're right that with biter evolution there is no going back, however you can absolutely have reduced attacks if you stop producing as much. It will take a bit of time to have an impact as pollution takes a while to move around the map, but if biters don't get pollution they can't spawn new units and therefore can't attack you as much!
      I agree with Factorio's addictiveness. It's so cool that there's so many valid ways to play the game, and even the mistakes feel "charming"! The big sense of ownership definitely keeps me going back for more.

      Factorio is basically an allegory to life: you trade your time for a marginal increase in productivity (basically school/training). After that, you trade another bit of time for another bit of productivity. This cycle never ends, and every increase/expansion only serves to fuel further growth. Gotta love them positive reinforcing loops

    The fact that there is a free demo which actually teaches you how to play the game before you pay for it is the kind of thing that every game used to do but no one does anymore. Games used to focus on the player's experience, factorio is one of those games.

    • @Carbon_Cola
      @Carbon_Cola  2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I really like that. It's such a consumer friendly way of seeing whether games are good for you. I suppose with Steam's 2h refund window you can get a similar thing, but I always liked that demos are often more custom-tailored to convey to you what the game is like. Always excited when there's demos for games on steam! That steam festival where a bunch of games had demos available was really cool. I discovered many new games that way!

      when i started playing factorio (which was in 0.14), dragging with power poles would just put them in every available tile so... if i were to try to drag a a power line with big electric poles a long distance, i would have clicked once, hold down the button, start running in the direction i wanted to drag the line, 2 tiles later, it would place a new big electric pole as then the tiles would be available again.

    Great review! I only missed a section on scaling, where you go from handcrafting, automation, train network, bots, blueprints, rocket, and then into megabase. I especially like the transition to an automated mall, and the transition to bots with blueprints.

      @Carbon_Cola  2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I was thinking about adding something like this, it's a good idea/suggestion! Ultimately I decided against it to not spoil the game's tech and retain a feeling of "discovery" with the viewers. I think that's where a lot of fun comes from! But your suggestion would probably have worked great too!

    Trains are a surprisingly meaty part of the game that I didn't quite understand and therefore sparsely used in my first playthrough (where I used mostly belts and drones).
    Once you understand rail signals it's a whole new game where you can spend 20 hours iterating over rail intersection blueprints.
    There's some people out there with smelting operations that require multiple 40 wagon trains on constant loop just for the iron ore
    I highly recommend the LTN mod to add another dimension to the trains system

    Let me also add a very important note: controls and UI are a masterpiece in this game, I can't stress it enough. Everything has hotkeys, you can copy\paste stuff, every menu (even options) has a fuzzy-search bar. You grab\put stuff by 1, 5, 50% or everything with just hotkeys

    • @Carbon_Cola
      @Carbon_Cola  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed a big part of Factorio's appeal is that it's so easy to make something complex, part of that is the fantastic UI as you've pointed out!

  • @l9m241

    This game is literally the "Play it YOUR way" kind of style I love.
    Want a challenge? Crank up enemy spawns! Make Items more expansive! Spread resources further apart! Make the world only a few tiles tall but infinite in a single direction!
    Mod the heck out of it! The documentation is the **Chefs Kiss** perfect example of well documentated features of stuff in the game. There's even content in the game that isn't actually used, but is their for modders to take advantage of.
    This is the type of game that the developers take into consideration the community. They have gone out of their way to fix BUGS for MODDERS! And the weekly blog posts that go into extreme intricate detail about the game and what challenges they faced trying to solve an issue, whether it was gameplay, a bug, performance, or even stuff both in and out of the game.
    My favorite is the fact the Expansion is being worked on with of the folks being the creator of the large Space Exploration mod, so you get on the blogs perspective of what it was like on the Community Modding API side and the actual codebase side and how they had to tackle problems with how they wanted to solve with the expansion and the lessons learned from their modding experience.
    The blogs are a fantastic read, like it's a nice thing to sit down and read and just be amazed at what problems and solutions they experienced before during and after developement.

    I have been playing PC games for thirty years. THIRTY years.
    I bought Factorio on May 29th of 2016. Since then I have played it for just over 2,000 hours. Two... thousand... hours.
    The only other game that I think might come close to that amount a play time for me would the the entire Sid Meier's Civilization franchise and I first started playing that in 1991.

      Hi Emil, my pleasure!
      You should check out Factorio's public server browser and find a map/server running "BiterBattles" by "ComfyFactory". Two teams with identical resource patches are split by water. Both teams play the normal factorio game, get attacked by biters etc. In addition to researching tech, science can be used to make the enemy team's biters stronger. It's played with randoms so don't expect crazy good coordination, but still people join the server and just do something they think makes sense. Expand mining, improve production, work on defenses etc. Still a bunch of people coming together to build a factory and fight the enemy team.
      I know the map has it's source code online on github so you could probably host your own server with friends as well, but the public server is actually quite frequented/played (as are all maps by ComfyFactory), so there's almost always a match going when you want to play BiterBattles!
      Let me know how you like it :)

I’m playing small and keeping my factory small because I’m playing without tutorials and kind of just experimenting with different systems I’ve been paying only for two days. And I’m finding it just very interesting How little impact the bugs have on where I am currently. But once I start to really ramp up production I know they’re going to come. So I get to basically choose when the difficulty ramps up while I am experimenting with factory designs. It’s genius.

    the mod which adds biter bodies as burnable fuel

    I love Factorio. I openly admit, I only once hit the AdMech phase where I could upkeep the factory... while forgetting exactly how everything worked together, just that it did. And it's a game I keep poking at here and there when I just want to get my hit of MASSIVE INDUSTRY. Recently started a Space Exploration modded game with a friend and, despite increased complexity, it oddly feels easier and more 'right'.

      I think this happens when you come to a stage where you are not sure what the best next step is and why you should be building anything. When there isn't a lot of pressure from biters, needing to expand to new resource etc. Basically when everything is working fine and you can survive well - you loose some pressure that before that kept you going.
      I think it helps to just have a very clear goal in mind "launch rocket before 20h" or something, at least it helped me.
      But also, I think it's 100% okay to stop a playthrough at this stage. You don't need to "finish" a round for it to have had meaning, playing half of it to blue science was fun and that's good enough too!
      What do you think?

The medium bitters have just started spawning, thats right i wasted like 8-12 hours to have about 671 solar panels and around 700-900 acumulators (I have around 4-5Gj total battery i think) place instead of automating military which I still craft by a autocrafter which i feed by a chest the game didnt punish me for playing like this instead it rewarded me since my pollution is going down giving me time to think how to automate both military and blue/chemical? science now without worring about bitters I hope. Plus, I think Factorio's gameplay flows better than in DSP so it's not as frustrating to try things out yourself
      I'll be here if I can help!

      @@Carbon_Cola I like how did you divide the video onto the most relevant parts of the game. I like also the way you explain the videos. One thing you could add to ur videos, is a bit of comedy. Keep that hard work and continue making videos. Im sure you will get far!

      When you mention comedy, did you enjoy the bits that I did add and you'd like just more of it, or were you thinking of some other type of humor/comedy?

      @@Carbon_Cola Yeah you should add some more bits of comedy. I dont mean making the entire video a joke. But try to put some more. That, in my opinion, would make it perfect.
      But you can continue with the normal way you did if you see that it isnt the way to go.
      Good day!

    Pollution does not make biters stronger, it makes biters attack you. Biters evolve and get bigger when you destroy their nests. If you hover over a biter spawner, it will even tell you by how much evolution is being sped up as a result of eradicating nearby nests. Also, biters do not become more numerous due to pollution, it's just that everything gets bigger further away from spawn; not just mineral deposits but also biter camps.

      Thanks for your comment!
      Actually there is a pollution component to biter evolution, and spawners consume pollution to send new biter waves to attack. You are right that biter bases only get activated by pollution touching them, so when you venture out further and further you have more and more bases fighting you. But without increased pollution biter spawns will slow down.
      There's some good info on this in the wiki! wiki.factorio.com/Enemies#Methods_of_increasing

    After playing for some times I turned biters off, was easy to repell every attack so it was just a waste of time dealing with. Same with power, added the Solar panel mod to not needing wasting time building new nuclear power plants all the time.
    Still 100% enjoyed playing going for a Gigabase! Blueprinting huuuuuuuuge parts of existing parts of the factory example red cards just to crank up the output, adding new mines and trains!
    Still dream of the day I have to curage to start it all over!

    I think the main reason that the game is so incredibly popular isn't necessarily to do with the core gameplay. It's that it's executed extremely well. Factorio's game design and development is possibly the best of the decade. It's incredibly optimized, the difficulty and learning curves are pretty much perfect, the game never gets overly complicated, it has the best mod support of any game I know of, possibly ever, and it is packed full of quality of life features you barely even notice, but which make all the difference. I don't think I can name a game with better attention to detail or better execution than factorio. Easily worth what they're asking you to pay for it.
