So not only did the engineer himself fail to show up to the scheduled tests, but there were also less testers available to handle him and all the other engineers and conductors on the railroad!!
This reminds me of some of the stories I've been told by old New Haven guys about five man crews and the only one sober enough to prop the engineer up to leave the yard at the beginning of the shift was the junior member. Because he wasn't an alcoholic yet.

What makes things worse for the engineer is that in post-wreck testing not only did they find a high blood alcohol level but they also found marijuana in his blood, but were not able to conclude as to whether or not marijuana contributed much to the accident. So not only was the engineer drunk but he was probably stoned off his rocker, too. Nah, if he didn't get suspended for a while he definitely got fired after the accident.
When some fellows from the Highway Patrol walk you off the job….he will never work in a safety sensitive environment for the rest of his career, or shambles thereof….when he gets out.
0.4% blood alcohol content is considered the "lethal" limit, but some people can go above that. For example, one guy in Lithuania was caught driving a car with 0.84% alcohol level. Yeah, double the lethal limit.
@@jlwalker2965 No, the legal limit here is 0.04%, so the guy was 20 times over it. 0.4% is the LD50 (AFAIK), it means that there is 50% chance you will die when you drink that much alcohol. However, different people have different tolerances, someone may die from less alcohol and someone can drink double that and still be conscious and somewhat able to drive a car.
I know a story given by first hand witness of a breathalyser test. It was done to a bus driver in Helsinki, Finland. The person I know, telling the story, was an EMT back then. The bus driver gave the result of 0.35%. No one knew he was drunk or an alcoholic.

My only comment to this is, it is too short! But don't take this too harshly, because I would probably say it is too short even if it was 5 hours or even 5 days long... Yup, I am definitely in love with 3/4 of an idiot show, just remember to switch PTC to NTC (Negative Train Control) if it gives you problems! :D
PTC restricted mode will still allow you do anything you want to this day. The only change they did was make restricted mode complain if you moved too long in restricted mode.

Control Point Springs, I know that location very well. I spent many hours driving conductors around Carey, OH putting together stone trains. It was a fun job but the pay was bad(non-railroad employee, 3rd party contractor). I watched a SD40-2 partially derail at a grain solo switching job. Frozen switches suck!
I have lived in Ohio for 16 years, and I can confirm that this state is pretty boring, except for Northern and Southern Ohio. Those areas are nice. However, it isn't boring when it comes to trains, as we're a pretty big crossroads state, with a lot of good and well-known railfanning spots. But, the traffic, especially in Marion, is often hit or miss.
Watched 10 minutes of the video trying to guess the crash but remember it clearly, I was at work 4 miles south of the crash that morning. They were cleaning up trash and frac sand for a week

Ok the word play on CSX reminds me of when i was still a conventional highway flagger. I am a D.O.T/S.E.O crash and cone truck operator for freeways/expressways but we flagged for a utility company called henkels and McCoy and the running joke was they were called crinkles and destroys. They used to be notorious for not useing stabilizer pads and the outriggers would crinkle roads. and the work they did would need to be fixed soon after installed or they would destroy stuff as they rushed working. Lol they are an excellent professional group that do great work nowadays but years ago, fuggin crinkle and destroy.
I remember when a steam locomotive's engineer killed many on board due to being intoxicated and carelessly went way over the speed limit and ran his train off the tracks at a sharp curve. He was charged with manslaughter. The locomotive was either repaired or scrapped.
Kinda surprised he got away with missing so many randoms. I'm a trucker and missing a random for any reason (except something like being in the hospital already) is considered an automatic failure and DOT suspension from driving a commercial vehicle until you complete a return to work program. And that's just from missing one test, even if it's as simple as you don't yet need to tinkle in the time window you have to take the test when called up. Also, anyone else notice the random people in the window in the background? Maybe set up near the window and turn this into something like The Today Show with their crowds watching from outside and getting to be on TV? lol

Leighton deserves another retro point for PSR. The NTSB meeting regarding this incident is up on TH-cam and they spend a considerable amount of time talking about the PSR factors that potentially contributed to this incident.
Particularly in the maintenance areas of the railroad, as well as the fact that we're dealing with a 2-mile-long train and the eastbound 4-mile-long train.
Basically, what Hyce said, but to expand on that, there are a lot of things that play into it. For example, if two locomotives have the exact same boiler and wheel arrangement, but one has smaller wheels, the one with the smaller wheels will be ‘’’’’’more powerful’’’’’’ because of tractive effort. The one with the bigger wheels will have a higher top speed. This doesn’t take into consideration superheating, feedwater heaters, bearing type, what type of valve gear you have, firebox size, tube size, draughting ability, and other such things which all have small impacts on performance.
Why didn't PTC prevent this crash (my guess? Super train had something go wrong mechanically and blew up. ((Before seeing story))) Edit: Oh it's two trains. New guess is picked a switch in a crossover. Double edit: I still say Layton was right. It was PSR. Profit over safety. Triple edit: wow. I was way off. Dude was hammered!

We need the two woodshop side stalls (4/5) for wood projects - 1009 getting paint and lettering in 5, 284 getting a platform and paint + lettering in 4. All the engines fit in 1 and 2, when you remove tenders and have 346 + 491 in stall 1. The big 3 in the window is probably a part of 318.

I’m pretty sure the trash train was from New York heading west just south of zanesville to the landfill, I’m a local truck driver for a construction company and we do some work for the landfill. Heads up though Ohio does take all of New Yorks trash both kinds people and trash 😂
