I called this gorgeous paradise island home for 3 years pre Covid. Angers me to see it has hit rock bottom but I am sure it will stand up on its feet firm to the ground like it always did. The country and the people deserve so much more. The warm smiles as I walked the streets is one of the things I genuinely loved about this gorgeous island.
My wife and I, Indian Tamils, extensively toured the northern half of Sri Lanka in in May 2016 and reached Kandy to start the tour of the southern half. Just then, a cyclone hit the island. We had to return home and haven't been able to complete the tour. And we happened to spot the Water Monitor exactly at the same place! We walked around Kandy just like you, in the rain. Memories of that beautiful island nation and the beautiful people are flooding back. We are still in touch with our Sinhalese driver cum guide, Disa who happens to hail from Kandy. Nice to see you having fun just like the way my wife and I did. But you should have visited the sacred Sri Dalada Maligawa.

If you come to Kandy in this season and leave without watching the Esala Perahera festival, it's like going to Paris and leaving without seeing the Eiffel Tower! 😂
Oh, You got to see the Kandy perahera. That is one of the most beautiful things to see in Sri Lanka. That includes some of the very traditional dances and events.

Komodo Dragons are from the Island of Komodo in Indonesia. What you saw is a very harmless Iguana. It is a water monito lizard. It is not dangerous to you at all. It is a a big lizard. There are no Komodo Dragons in Sri Lanka.

Yes!, running sneakers with glycerine soles are much, much better to travel with. They are not only the most comfy ones to walk all day and be in your feet all day, but if they get wet, they dry in a minute and they don’t retain bad smell, get yourself some ben, they are also cool👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Usually, these days raining in the west and the central part of Sri Lanka. Try to move the eastern coast( Trincomalee Beaches and Batticaloa Beaches- Season is May to September)
If it was the same type of reptile that was in the water and then on the land, then it is the asian water monitor. As far as I know, Komodo dragon is the big brother of water monitor. I'm not sure if it's right.

The water monitor is not that dangerous if its a small one but if it's like more than a meter better not go too close. Because usually the monitors over here we see aren't that big.

"Buddha Tattoos" and " and "Buddhism" is far different. Don't be a careless traveler. Be conscious and aware. You may well take some time to study a bit of Buddhism while you are at Sri Lanka, specially in Kandy. Visit and have a discussion with a monk at a meditation center. Also, another tip: its best you cover those tattoos, might set off some hard-line people around here, who might be offended by them. All said, welcome to Sri Lanka, and thank you for coming. Before all the trouble erupted it was 250 or so to the pound. Now it's about 450 so don't haggle too much. It's really cheap for you. And people are struggling to survive.

The fuel problem is some what resolved because of a qr code introduced, a weekly quota is allocated weekly so the queues have become smaller
