      Good video. Does the pyrethrin kill pollinators latently - if I spray it at dusk on flowers will it harm the bees the next day?

    I really like this product. Great presentation. I would change one thing... with this high of atomization, I would be wearing a mask with every application. It's essentially vaping chemicals.
    While your information is correct about spraying pyrethin late as to avoid beneficial pollinators, I will be refraining use on that. It is my consensus that the beneficial bugs will still know something dangerous was sprayed on their favorite pollen the next days. Just 2 sides to that coin.
    Thanks.

      Thanks. Truthfully, if a company wanted to send me something that would truly help me and it DID work, I wouldn't mind reviewing it, but I don't want to turn this channel into some type of sales channel. I do promote products on occasion, but I only promote what I use that helps me so others can observe what works for me. I don't want to keep any secrets. I too was frustrated by the multiple 2gal pump sprayers I’ve purchased in the past. I finally purchased, on the recommendation of my exterminator, a 4gal backpack sprayer. The brand was Field King. I figured if it was good enough for a professional exterminator company to use on a daily basis it would work for a residential consumer. I am very pleased with the performance of this sprayer I purchased on Amazon for $65!

      I was going to go that route as well until I stumbled across the battery operated foggers. I also want to use this for fogging my lawn for mosquitos, so that’s why I went with a fogger instead of a sprayer. The foggers are designed for more efficient coverage where sprayers are designed to soak things down. I believe fogging will be better for gardens and lawn use, whereas sprayers are better for perimeter barriers around a house. Just something to consider.

    I have just had the worst growing season I have ever experienced. Every single known pest in our state can be found in my garden. I have a wide variety of different species of caterpillars, grubs, flies, grasshoppers, snails, slugs, aphids, mites, mosquitoes, and even ants targeting my crops. I also have a problem with fungus and powdery mildew.

However, you can also perimeter spray your house and yard with this, or treat the lawn for mosquitoes, so keep that in mind.

    • @TheMillennialGardener

      As long as the tea is strained and has no grit, you could do that. If it has any sand or residue in it, it could clog the sprayer. But yes, anything pure and water-based, it can spray. It's VERY popular to use bleach sprays to sanitize indoor areas with these.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome! You can only use water-based sprays in the sprayer, so all I do is once I'm done using it, I fill it 1/4 of the way with water, shake it up, dump the tank, fill it up 1/4 way again and turn it on and let it blow the clean water through the machine. If you want to clean it more deeply, you can dump a 32oz bottle of hydrogen peroxide into the empty tank, then turn it on and let it blow the whole bottle through. Don't use anything like alcohol, because it will eat the plastic tubing and leave a nasty residue that'll burn your plants. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water, so it won't leave a residue.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know your pain. Pyrethrin works very well in this case. The key in reducing the pest population is "breaking the cycle" of pest propagation. You can kill the adult bugs, but if they've already laid eggs, they'll hatch in no time and the cycle starts again. You have to kill the adults, then kill the larvae and nymphs. This sprayer helps because you can efficiently spray the top of the soil, which can kill the surface larvae, but it doesn't penetrate the soil line deep enough to hurt the worms that live down below. Maintaining a schedule is important.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, as long as it has dissolved completely and won't clog the sprayers. Using water soluble crystals like MiracleGro or Jack's would likely be fine since they dissolve entirely. Something like fish emulsion could be risky since it isn't perfectly smooth.

      Climate change is creating the perfect climate for pest to thrive. The best defense against pest is to build a greenhouse to block them out, like home Depot and Walmart does. Green house always reduces heat stress on plants if you tint the glass or use mesh dark screens. Green houses will also keep the birds, squirrels and rodents off from eating your plants.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use pyrethrin concentrate for mosquitoes. You can buy either 100% organic pyrethrin, or you could buy a natural pyrethrin fortified with piperonyl butoxide, which greatly enhances potency at lower concentrations, which makes it a fraction of the cost. It will lose the organic label with the piperonyl butoxide added, but it is still considered a natural product with extremely low toxicity to mammals. One animal you should not spray pyrethrin around is cats, though, so keep that in mind. Natural pyrethrin has a very short half life, so if you spray in the evening, it'll be plenty safe for any cats by morning.

    Great video! Thanks for sharing this information! I was buying a lot of, I think it was Captain Jack sprays, last summer. I think using the products you use and the ULV sprayer could be less expensive and give better results in the ling run. Last summer was my first foray into growing more than a cherry tomato plant or two in containers, just for kicks and a few delicious tomatoes for salads. I got a late start, but thanks to encouragement I received from you to try growing sweet potato slips from a sweet potato, I actually had a somewhat productive container growing season as a first attempt and even had enough to can a couple of pints of tomatoes into a marinara sauce, and canned some pickled jalapenos from peppers I grew. I also dehydrated some chili peppers. So, it was a modest beginning, but it was a beginning nonetheless, and I learned a lot over last summer - which was really all I expected for my first foray into having more of an actual garden, even if my garden was confined to planters. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!
    Do you always feed Dale home-cooked meals? I used to make food from a mix (Healthy Dogma) for my dogs (I added the meat and water), and they really enjoyed it. Around the start of the pandemic, they all got some sort of GI bug that gave them diarrhea. It wasn't pretty. Wasn't sure what caused it, but I discontinued the pet mix blends and a Nutro dry kibble at that point.

    Those foggers do look fun to use. As bad as aphids are here, and as big a garden as I'd like to have, it does seem like a no-brainer investment.
    Dale's self-control is quite impressive! He's such a good kid. My Beagle learns the fun tricks really easily, but when it comes to food, she kinda goes bonkers. Tell Dale he has inspired me to kick it into high gear on table manners training.
    Also, you have nice arms.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was worth the investment for me, for sure. The amount of time I was spending with a pump sprayer was miserable. Dale is a very good boy. He wants to eat so badly, but he manages to contain himself because he's learned he's always rewarded for patience. He's come so far since we adopted him. A year and a half ago, he had never even been inside a house, and every sound was terrifying to him. Now, he acts like he owns the place...because he does! The key was rewarding him for his patience. We would pick up the bowl and take it away in the beginning when he was pestering us, but now, ANY time we are eating, he comes and sits and waits, so he's been trained to know that sitting and waiting patiently equals FOOD! The arms are just camera tricks 🤓

      Outstanding. I just used it yesterday to put spinosad down on my brassicas and cucurbits. I don't think the machine is easily disassembled. • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joshualloyd4275 they're different. Pyrethrin is a contact killer. You need the pyrethrin to directly touch the insects, and it breaks down very quickly. It's inert within hours, so if you spray during a time when pests aren't very active, it won't do much. Spinosad coats plants and can stay active for several days, but the insects need to physically eat the plants covered in spinosad for it to be effective. It is not a contact killer. Pyrethrin is effective on all insects, but spinosad is not. I haven't found spinosad useful against aphids. Pyrethrin is extremely useful, especially since aphids barely move, so they're very easy to contact. On things like corn and squash, I've found spinosad to be more useful. It simply depends.

    Used the ulv fogger twice now. Boy is it amazing! Only issue I have is with the way tube that draws out the solution. When you believe the solution is out there actually is still a good amount, about 32 ounces. I guess it’s due to the design of the tube that draws out the solution from the tank. Next time I will try to see if I can reposition the tube. Any thoughts?

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ULV fogger is excellent. What I have to do is when the tank falls below about 20%, I turn the fogger on a 30 degree angle. That allows the tube to suck out the rest of the liquid. In the fogger's defense, I've had to do the exact same thing on every pump sprayer I've ever owned, and I've owned 4-5 of them over the years. It's just part of the tube design and there isn't really a way around it without designing a tank fed from the bottom.

If that's the case, this won't replace that unless you're going to religiously spray your lawn constantly. @TheMillennialGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but I would caution you before using herbicides in a fogger like this for two reasons:
      1. Foggers like this are designed to cover a very wide area with whatever it is you're spraying. If you're mixing herbicides in this machine, you are not going to be able to control the spray very well. It is going to broadcast-spray. If you get herbicide on plants you don't want it to touch, you could kill your plants. This is a great product for spraying an entire lawn quickly with a targeted, lawn-safe herbicide, but I wouldn't want this anywhere near my garden when herbicide is in it.
      2. If you want to use this for herbicide, I suggest getting a machine DEDICATED for herbicides only. The last thing you want to do is share a machine used in the garden for insect and fungus control with herbicides as well. If you have any leftover herbicide residue in there, you could damage your plants. If you want to use a machine like this for weed control AND disease/pest control, I suggest buying two separate machines. I have a 2-gallon pump sprayer for herbicides for my lawn that I ONLY use for herbicides. It will never go near my garden.

      I just move my shoulders up and down. The mist is fine enough that it coats the undersides well. When you operate it, it all becomes clear. The fog is so dense and comprehensive that it takes very little effort. You have to aim it very little compared to a pump sprayer because it is so voluminous. Sprayers are precise. This isn't. This is like shooting a giant cannon, so you have to do very little work on your end. This is 10x easier than a pump sprayer. I keep the nozzle mostly in the neutral position for my indeterminate tomatoes and they all get soaked top-to-bottom in seconds. You only need to aim if you have very low-lying plants, or tall trees, or you want to drench the soil for pest control.

    Would it work as a fish fertilizer foliar spray? Neem oil spray? BT spray? I’d love to save time on those sprays. Thank you so much!!!

      It will work for neem and BT, absolutely. Fish fertilizer concerns me a little because it is very thick, and I would be worried about the nozzle clogging over time. It may be fine, but it seems risky to me because of how thick it is. If it is a water-based foliar spray, like a filtered, water-like kelp concentrate, you can use those sprays.

      Thank you, makes sense. I use Neptune’s Harvest Tomato & Veg and it is thick. Thank you for the video and maybe I’ll add it when the funds allow it.
