  • Bari Weiss sits down with the journalist Haviv Rettig Gur.
Haviv is one of the smartest and most thoughtful writers on Israel and the Middle East. He and Bari discussed Israel's uncertain future, what it means for Palestinians, how the current war reflects wider battles in Islam, and why Americans must realize they are living "inside" of history.
For more “FP in Israel,” read Bari’s article here: www.thefp.com/p/bari-weiss-th...

Love this. Love facts. Thank you. Truth for Peace. Why this many facts are just completely ignored on a daily basis. Is concerning for truth facts peace and a very ignorant public that finds it easier to believe terrorist governments than democratic secular Jews. You guys give me hope. But why why why is it so hard to get facts into the “news”when it comes to Israel???? As a secular liberal Israeli American. I already had no faith in a post truth social media world but is it that or something else and why is it being accepted and repeated by “journalists” that so clearly have no clue what is actually going on and are perpetuating jihadist lies w/ no concern about the damage they are doing for everyone in this region that actually wants peace. And also to boycott innocent peace loving musicians and professors bc they are Jewish is so disgusting and No one in America seems to care. Bc it’s now considered ok to treat ALL Jews as if were Bibi. It’s ignorant dangerous offensive and hypocritical to a degree that we need a new word to treat anyone that is Jewish or Israeli like s**** and not feel bad or be concerned about the fact that they are openly treating a minority that just suffered the worst terror attack in history after 9/11 but per capita much worse than it and are instead supporting a terror group that is openly committed to killing Jews and Arabs and atheists and all the lgbt and anyone that doesn’t support terrorism including their own people. I never thought I could see such levels of ignorance and if just continues on until they finally meet Hamas/islamist and realize the level of evil includes them as well they continue to spread their lies and agenda as facts.

Great interview 👏👏 thank you. When I was a child my parents told me that in America a person could fall down in the street and no one would approach him. In Israel a person will fall in the street and the whole street will stop until he gets back on his feet. In Israel you can see two people yelling at each other and in the end hug and do Shabbat together. We all know someone who knows someone because this is a very small country where it is mandatory to enlist in the army. Since I was born I knew that when I turned 18 I would have to go to the army, and as a woman I would have to serve for at least two years. It was also clear to me that if I did not form an army and defend my country, I would not have a country. This is what makes a strong and united country, when its people understand that they are responsible for protecting it from the enemies who want to destroy it. The people are the country. We do not have the privilege of being too selfish if we want to exist.

For those who don't know, usually about two or three time a week he joins Den Senor on the latter's podcast 'Call Me Back' and you can get this level of analysis multiple times a week if you want it. He also has two very, very informative recent lectures on TH-cam at Jewish colleges in the US explaining the history and misunderstandings of Israel. If this got you: go watch them right away, especially the second of the two.

As a US conservative Christian & 8 time veteran of the recent Middle East wars, I listened intently to Haviv’s thoughts & comments on the current situation. Haviv’s thoughts on Iran’s & the Ummah’s motivations to establish Islam’s supremacy is a perspective I had not thought of.
I’ve seen Taliban & ISIS use Muslim women & children as human shields. I’ve heard of them using mosques & “holy sites” for military operations.
FYI. MBS has been accused of being an apostate….
Read the Q, the Hadiths, The Sira of “Mo” & you find the where the hatred / Jew hatred becomes clear. The “People of the Book”.

Jews lived in the Land of Israel before the Arabs and before the Zionist movement was born.
Most Arabs in the Land of Israel are descendants of Arab immigrants in the new
Jews lived in the countries called nowadays “Lebanon”, "Iraq" and "Syria" Before the Arabs!! Jews lived in “Iraq” since Babylonian times until they were expelled in the 1950s.
Arabs lived in the Arabian Peninsula. The Babylonians were not Arabs.
Jews lived in Egypt before the Arabs! The ancient Egyptians were not Arabs. Even during later times, the Greek rule of Egypt and the Roman rule of Egypt, they were not Arabs. Jews lived there at the times of Greek rule and Roman rule.
And Jews lived in the Land of Israel before the Arabs and during all the Muslim occupation of the land.
When the Zionist movement was born it developed the land and many people immigrated to it; both Jews and Arabs. The Arabs developed the false narrative that they lived in the land for ever.
Jews were called Palestinians. The “Palestinian People” is an invention born in the 1960’s with the help of the KGB.
I would recommend reading Dr. Rivka Shpak Lissak about the history of the Arab immigration to the Land of Israel.
The Arabs were never the indigenous people - the Jews were.
It is time to end the (Arab) occupation and dismantle the (Arab) settlements.

And it's two patches of land in different locations. And both are in Area C which the Palestinians AGREED at Oslo would be under Israeli control -- they are NOT "transfers", which is why "Palestinians have little ability to stop" them. And BTW settlements on empty land were AGREED to be legal under Oslo (look it up). WaPo at least listed some of those facts, which is more than you did.

“Palestinians have little ability to stop the land transfers. After the 1967 war, Israel issued a military order that stopped the process of land registration across the West Bank. Now families lack the paperwork to prove that they have private ownership over their land. And tax records, the only other evidence of West Bank property rights, are not accepted by Israeli authorities.”

One of the most enlightening discussions of the issue I have heard. As a non-Jewish American who tended to side wirh the cartoonish view of the world and race in general, that the commentator mentioned, I feel vindicated in my recent, instinctual rejection of that cartoon. Thank you Bari and friend. The depth of conviction of Jews who fought for the Civil rights of others in America have been betrayed by fake, uneducated " social justice warriors", all of whom would be the first victims of the regime they support in Gaza.

Loved this interview. For anyone who is interested - Haviv Rettig Gur gives two amazing lectures and they’re posted on TH-cam: “The great misinterpretion” and “the Jews who lived through history.” I watch a lot of lectures because I’m a huge nerd and there’s no doubt that they were the best lectures I’ve ever sat through. He’s such a good storyteller. I watched them both first alone then rewatched with my husband then RE watched with my friends.
Truly the best lectures I’ve ever heard!!

He’s right on the money regarding the ability of Israelis to simultaneously be rugged individualists while not losing connection to one’s tribe which provides community and interpersonal and inter generational connective-ness. Here in west, we are so incredibly lonely as the loss of communal connections (churches, civic orgs, bowling leagues, etc etc) has been vast compared to how communal structures provided as such for our grandparents. Enter social media - and that need for communal connection gets a “quick fix” but is anything but authentic. Turns out Hilary was right (as painful as it is to admit that as someone who is not a big fan of the Clintons) - it (healthy or best approach to child rearing and a meaningful life itself) really does take a village. Our society that has embraced self centered life styles and ways of living is learning this the very hard way through bouts of depression, anxiety, suicide, and unhappiness.

@@Ripleycat in the immediate experience sure, but go to Israel, talk to Israelis it’s more than just one traumatic event that binds. I think a big part is that most Israelis serve in the IDF or similar. Thus national service is required and that’s huge in my opinion. The other is cultural. Not just Judaism but Islam, Druze, other emphasize community, regular family gatherings (not once twice a year like we might in USA), a connection to something bigger than yourself that binds you to a community. You don’t get that in USA unless we are war which is unfortunate because I love the USA. But we are losing civic pride and national unity slowly but steadily. I frankly think USA needs to institute national service for all 18 years olds for 2 years prior to college. It can be military, teach for America, etc etc, but get out there and meet different people and serve something bigger than yourself that stands for something you believe in.

Once again Bari and TFP prove that journalism is not dead and that profound truth can still be heard if one strives to listen. I will in the future take the concept of progressives living in a 'moral cartoon' into my own interactions with those who do. I like Bari fear for the future, but realize that the U.S. can no longer spend blood and treasure to defend those unwilling to defend themselves. I am a Trump supporter and really don't think Trump is a Putin fan, but he is also smart enough to realize Putin is the one we have to deal with right now. He was very supportive of Israel, and I supported that. I am not a Jew. I have visited most of the countries in the Mideast and like to think I am as supportive of Israel as I can be, for a multitude of reasons, some religious (I am a Christian) some historical, and some moral. As an outsider looking in I am glad that Israel has such intelligent and inspiring critics who understand the bigger picture and can explain things to an American audience. Good job Bari and Haviv.
