They always have a Caribbean dictator to admire, a guerrilla, a narco to follow, a cool nationalist tyranny country which is against NATO, and of course their favorites in the 'yihaff' since decades ago. They are not the democratic left, they are the trolls of the democracy. Some days ago I listened Noam Chomsky in the 70s saying 'this is not a democracy', and it was like a lightbulb over my head, that is it, they are ike a kid who discover their parents having sex and any other family or even being homeless is better.

Oh really? But it's OK for those on the right, including the entire "leadership" of the R swamp gang, to blast Biden and the Dems with outrageously false accusations and inflammatory rhetoric that further divides our country and pollutes our political discourse? It's OK for that same morally void cohort to condemn the conviction of trump as a persecution and rigged trial, etc.? That's sickening and far worse than supposedly canceling some individual. What is she going to do to undo all the damage that her former friends have done to our Republic ? Why should I give her credit for realizing that conservatives are not Nazis.
Nazis, of course, were.....wait for it..... National Socialists. Even now, she
enjoys all the freedoms and rights her flipping "Progressive" group have worked to destroy.
Sorry, I am not gleefully celebrating this woman. Has she truly recognized all the evil the "Progressivism" represents. I am willing to bet my car, she still supports the "child sacrifice" cult of abortion, the race-hustling efforts of the Left, the weakening of the family and Faith.
Even if she became a woman of Faith, I would tell her to "bear fruits befitting repentance."
Yup, that is it. How about repentance, humility and throwing her efforts into undoing
the damage to our country she contributed to so comfortably over the years.

Haven't Slept right for 7 months since. Too many stab wounds in the back to lay comfortably. Too many nightmares about friends and relatives in Israel being dead or worse. Bari put it best, "I went to bed on October 6th a progressive, and woke up October 8th a 79 year old Neo-Conservative." Ideologues are entirely full of shit, litmus tests, pearl clutching and purity scapegoating prevail on the extreme Left and Right. It's not Horsehoe "theory" anymore. It's Theorem now. And it's a G-ddamn disgrace. Charles Darwin literally wrote in "The Origin of Species" that the only way human beings could ever outmanuver "survival of the fittest," was through collaboration. Extremism is the death of that. We cannot let it ever have footing.

The adults in the big house understand that there are necessary limits to violence, whereas in reform schools (particularly CYA), youthful rage has no culturally understood limit. There was a point, I guess in the early 90s when I was in university, and LOOOOONG before cancel culture, when I realized that the "Left" didn't care about truth any more than the "Right". Ideological purity seemed to be the means AND the ends. Since then I haven't identified with the Left and it's gone way off in totally nutty directions, and unwittingly in the service of authoritarians seeking to divide western nations.
I don't think I walked away from the Left, the left long since abandoned the ideals of compassion and have become a force of repression. I consider myself a feminist, I'm helping to raise a strong daughter and a sensitive son, support the arts and believe in the public sphere, and help raise money for anti-poverty and anti-homelessness initiatives here in Toronto, there's no political home for me in this country any more. Let's hope the pendulum swings back to sanity sooner than later. Western society sucks except when compared to the rest of them. What we've built is good, and should be better rather than torn down.

She's a witty, funny writer so these weak-ish reasons are surprising. However, it's important to hear - helps understand how people can get so easily b-washed and swept along. Mob mentality is real. For those of us who grew up understanding that good people can disagree politically, it's hard to understand this black and white view politics has taken. The progressive left now all sound the same, use the same words, react, parrot the same way. At least progressives of the past were more individual and didn't just go along blindly. The Woke (American Maoists) know what the good and bad views are, according to their literature and DEI programming. They take every situation and find a way to attribute evil to an individual based on nonexistent “group guilt”. From there, they know how to destroy someone at a moments notice by attributing their motives to unproven guilt based on their “identity” *or* their proximity to someone with a “bad” identity

That's really interesting because we have a glimpse, from the inside, of what it is to be part of a group that enforces this kind of herd mentality.
Nellie said it very well: she felt compelled to go with the group and try to destroy someone's livelihood if this person deviated from the dogma. I think it is telling when Nellie said she had been a very good soldier of «The Movement». It just shows how easily even a strong minded person can be manipulated by this kind of groupthink. That's a good reminder that nobody is immune to that sort of trap.
It may sound cheesy but I can't help but notice that what got Nelly out of this herd mentality was love. Love for her family members and love for Bari.
No, love is not the answer, but when people you care about are targeted by your «friends», you tend to question your so-called friends.

As an old First Amendment liberal, but a conservative Eastern Orthodox Christian, I know that certain labels are now meaningless. The real divide is over the First Amendment -- free speech, freedom of association, freedom of religion. So what is a "liberal"? What is the word for Movement people? A Muslim human rights activist told me that he is starting to use the word "Jacobin," based on hostility to traditional forms of faith. TheFP folks: What are your thoughts?

Group think might not be the worst characteristic that people engage in, but I'm pretty sure that every noxious, evil and destructive movement in history exhibited and enforced it rigorously and brutally. By nature I'm not a person who goes along because it's what you're expected to do, and have encountered a lot of resistance as a result. But I assess each situation and person on its and their own merits and proceed accordingly, regardless of what others think or want me to do. That's how everyone should ideally behave, but, alas, humans are herd animals and most just go with the flow, to avoid rejection and and reprobation and feel like they belong. I may more often than not agree with how most people who align with my overall political, moral and ideological views see things and act, but not because they do, but rather because I came to that position on my own.

After seeing the insane social laws and deficits in both countries I became a conservative. The problem here is whether it's people like Bari Weiss, Dave Rubin, Nellie Bowles, Michael Shellenberger, Matt Taibi or whomever else, is that a lot of them are still liberals, and not just any liberals, but really left leaning liberals. I don't really think that the conservative movement embracing some of these people really like it's doing actually helps. They are still part of the problem and IMO a very clever tool to move the Overton window to the left. If these people theoretically 'come to the right' then essentially democrat political philosophy from 10-15 years ago becomes the new conservatism. And this isn't coming from a hardcore republican voter, I'm a non-partisan right-leaning moderate just warning conservatives to beware.

Anyone who wants to confront complex matters should probably try at least to study science in enough depth to know what a complex (but tractable) problem really looks like. I'm sure some of this audience has done this. The intractability of figuring out a rational take on the culture wars dwarfs this, and yet, we continue to hear the kind of platitudes present in this conversation about how we deal with folks with whom we fundamentally disagree. Sure, "canceling" people doesn't make the divide disappear; it may just mean we move on to another distraction. What I mainly hear in this clip is this cloying, almost continuous emoting about how bad something felt. From the perspective of a scientist, there comes a point in tackling a difficult problem where the key to moving forward is not thinking that my failure to progress is about... me.
