This is said to be the first, modern day, premium leather Catholic Bible. This edition is part of the release of the second edition of the GAB (interesting acronym). This edition has an annual reading plan which corresponds to AP’s podcast of “Bible in a Year”. There are now color-coded references to AP’s edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (of which Tim received a review copy). There are 32 new footnotes. Also, the maps are redesigned. The translation is the same (RSV-2CE), so just the above are new/changed. Thanks for the unboxing, Tim!

I’m catholic and heard about this a few days ago because I’m on the email list from doing Bible in a year. The content did change a little bit as far as I read about. I like the updated version a bit more, based on the little bit I’ve seen. I have the paper back edition and that’s how I read the Bible in full the very first time. I want this one so bad, after learning all about premium bibles, but it’s too much and unnecessary for our family. It is super cool though and I’m just excited that it exists.
I have the synthetic leather version of the Great Adventure Catholic Bible and I absolutely love it! I own several different bibles and this one is my favorite. Their great adventure reading plan is wonderful and the construction is top notch! Catholic or not, I highly recommend this one! Thank you for the review! I’m looking forward to this edition.
Tim, I think a full review would be a good idea because I believe from what I was reading, the inside has been updated with more footnotes, updated chapter introductions, and I believe the page count is different. Would also like to know if they’re going to offer any other colors. I’d love a premium Bible, but brown is my least favorite color.
Tim, I believe the new edition includes cross references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church in the footnotes that are not included in the first edition.

It will depend on whether this sells well. For years, Ignatius Press has not offered a premium Bible edition, due to very low bible sales for Catholic Bibles (note that of the top ten bibles sold in the US, none are a Catholic edition). Ascension Press has taken the plunge where no Catholic publisher has chosen to do. Time (and sales) will tell!

The Catholic Bible industry is not dominated by large publishers with vast resources serving a mature and discerning market, as in Protestant Bible sales. The Catholic market is served by dozens of small, independent publishers (most of whom do not report their sales) whose primary target is the sacramental gift market. Publishers that do report their sales of Catholic Bibles are generally non-Catholic publishers, for whom the Catholic market is a niche. Moreover, the Catholic community Bible translations are dominated by institutional copyright holders that add complexity and expense to publishing endeavors. The most common translation, the New American Bible and its revisions provide over a million dollars in royalties to the copyright holders (the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) each year. New editions of all Catholic Bibles must go through an ecclesiastical approval process before they can be published. All this adds expense and complexity to the process, something that non-Catholic publishers don’t have to manage. Additionally, premium editions are extremely expensive to publish, something that small publishers either don’t have the institutional expertise to manage or the resources to accomplish. For example, latest edition of the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible Old and New Testament has taken 25 years to complete because the publisher essentially self-funded the project. The good news is that the Catholic Bible publishers are maturing and taking cues from small, independent premium publishers like Schuyler. I fully expect the Ascension Premium Bible to sell out. The Catholic demographic matches the average American household income brackets with about 20% of Catholic households in the US making $100k or more per year. The premium Bible market is squarely targeted to this demographic. I expect sales to be the fastest growing in the Catholic Bible market.

I've never looked at a Catholic Bible before despite having gone to a Catholic university for undergrad. One of the required texts for English 101 was The New English Bible with Apocrapha and I just pulled it out and it's easy to read with a comfortable typeface. The text was an accompaniment to Paradise Lost by Milton which was the main reading for the course. There were many other texts but I think that we went through Paradise Lost for the whole semester. 'I looked up the difference between the Catholic Bible and Protestant Bibles and it's seven books which are included in the Apocrapha so I do have them in this Bible. I had a chance to look through the Book of Morman recently as there was one in a hotel drawer (along with the Gideon). I think that it's useful to have at least some familiarity with these different versions or other books.
I got one for Christmas (I am a reverted lapsed Catholic) and I think it is worth doing a deep dive into. I do think it is slightly different than the other version you have.
He has reviewed the Word on Fire bibles. I would also be excited to see him review the new complete Ignatius study Bible. I just got my hardcover version in the mail, but I would love to see Tim's take.
I have Catholic Bible Press RSV Personal Red one. One's enough for me this one looks nice tho but I don't like the brown color, wish it was red or black tho then I would get one, but the price is too much. I'm happy with mine hope everyone is happy with theirs here if they buy one after this review.
Tim, if you happen to read this, how is Luke 1:34 translated? It's been noted that different RSV2CEs have different translations. Ignatius appears to have done a stealth edit at some point to update the wording from the original RSV.
I don’t think this is exactly the same as the previous. This is an updated second edition I believe. Looking forward to a full review of the second edition!

They made changes to what’s inside and reduced the number of pages. Added additional information, including reading plans in the beginning and text is darker. I got that from another review.
Tim, I have the blue edition that I got about 6 months ago. Is there any difference in the content of the blue edition compared to the goatskin? I REALLY a love the goatskin but if there isn’t any difference, not sure I should buy it. I asked ascension but they never got back to me. I know the paper (40gsm) is the same.
Never really been a fan of floppy Bibles. To close to a paperback feel for me. There are some very nice hardcover Catholic Bibles. Also the Ronald Knox translations are usually offered in that “premium” style. But yes! The great adventure Bible is great study Bible and great for anyone to get a jumpstart in their knowledge of scripture and faith

I think there’s a real gap in the market for a smaller size premium Catholic bible. Imagine a Pitt Minion or even a Cameo size ESV CE printed and bound by Jongbloed. Come on Cambridge…
I have the "leatherlike" and felt it was WAY overpriced. This too, appears to cost double what it should. I love the contents and love Ascension and the Great Adventure Bible series, but this is a pass. As a Catholic, I more interested in Ignatius Press' new full study bible.
Why why why. Why did they cheapen a premium bible with logos and the branding on the front cover. Feels like marketing was the goal over finally giving catholics a premium bible that they can proudly place next to a premium protestant bible. 😢 such a disappointment. They just couldnt help themselves.
"Only $125." That's more than double the price of the original version that contains the same content, and it is unaffordable these days. This is a frivolous purchase, and it looks like Ascension is more a high profit conscious corporation than a Christian ministry.
This is probably the cheapest high quality/durable bible I’ve ever seen. First catholic bible that comes high quality without depending on $200-300 rebind.
While I understand and sympathize with your connection to family members who are Catholic, that doesn’t justify promoting Catholic Bibles, as doing so perpetuates the errors of Catholic teachings. These versions often contain elements that reinforce practices like idol worship and praying to the dead-practices that are not in alignment with God's Word. Supporting such translations only deepens the spiritual confusion. Promoting these Bibles is as misguided as endorsing the LOL Cat Bible, The Word on the Street translation, or even the New World Translation used by Jehovah's Witnesses. Darkness cannot lead to light, and promoting such works undermines the truth of Scripture. A person who worships idols and prays to dead people cannot be right with the Lord.
He's reviewing a Bible dude. He's clearly not Catholic but does have Catholic viewers. It makes sense for a Bible Review Channel to review options for Catholics (which aren't many to be honest) and also he can review a Catholic Bible and not agree or follow Catholicism. A Nickle's Worth reviews Catholic Bibles for his Catholic Audience frequently, is Tim Wildsmith not allowed to review them too?
@@timwildsmith yes but the reformation happened for a reason. Bible believing Christians were burnt at the stake by Catholics. They also tried to hide the word of God from the common man by keeping it in Latin. No promotion of Catholicism should be permitted with their dark past and their most recent child molesting priest scandal.
Got the Ignatius in leather it’s a behemoth definitely a leave on a book stand to read(have a douay rheims for more portability 😂by baronius)but not move much very useful good information. So depends on what you want in terms of portability. also this has perimeter stitch so more durability will last u forever unless u have a water accident.
As a Catholic I am very happy.

Agreed. I spent $300 to have a Baronius Press DR Rebound a while back. It is sad that we do not have Roman Catholic Bibles in premium additions.

I think there’s a real gap in the market for a smaller size premium Catholic bible. Imagine a Pitt Minion or even a Cameo size ESV CE printed and bound by Jongbloed. Come on Cambridge…

Just like their regular Bible, this is way too expensive.
I have the "leatherlike" and felt it was WAY overpriced. This too, appears to cost double what it should.
I love the contents and love Ascension and the Great Adventure Bible series, but this is a pass.
As a Catholic, I more interested in Ignatius Press' new full study bible.
Why why why. Why did they cheapen a premium bible with logos and the branding on the front cover. Feels like marketing was the goal over finally giving catholics a premium bible that they can proudly place next to a premium protestant bible. 😢 such a disappointment. They just couldnt help themselves.
"Only $125." That's more than double the price of the original version that contains the same content, and it is unaffordable these days. This is a frivolous purchase, and it looks like Ascension is more a high profit conscious corporation than a Christian ministry.
This is probably the cheapest high quality/durable bible I’ve ever seen. First catholic bible that comes high quality without depending on $200-300 rebind.
While I understand and sympathize with your connection to family members who are Catholic, that doesn’t justify promoting Catholic Bibles, as doing so perpetuates the errors of Catholic teachings. These versions often contain elements that reinforce practices like idol worship and praying to the dead-practices that are not in alignment with God's Word. Supporting such translations only deepens the spiritual confusion. Promoting these Bibles is as misguided as endorsing the LOL Cat Bible, The Word on the Street translation, or even the New World Translation used by Jehovah's Witnesses. Darkness cannot lead to light, and promoting such works undermines the truth of Scripture. A person who worships idols and prays to dead people cannot be right with the Lord.
Why are you promoting Catholic literature?
He's reviewing a Bible dude. He's clearly not Catholic but does have Catholic viewers. It makes sense for a Bible Review Channel to review options for Catholics (which aren't many to be honest) and also he can review a Catholic Bible and not agree or follow Catholicism. A Nickle's Worth reviews Catholic Bibles for his Catholic Audience frequently, is Tim Wildsmith not allowed to review them too?
I have a lot of friends, family, and subscribers who are Catholic. I want them to know about the best Bibles available to them.

Got the Ignatius in leather it’s a behemoth definitely a leave on a book stand to read(have a douay rheims for more portability 😂by baronius)but not move much very useful good information. So depends on what you want in terms of portability. also this has perimeter stitch so more durability will last u forever unless u have a water accident.
