It's based on Eugene Shoemaker - an American geologist and one of the founders of the field of planetary science. After he died, some of his ashes were carried to the moon with the Lunar Prospector mission.
His ashes were carried in a container with a picture of the comet Hale-Bopp, a picture of the Barringer Meteor Crater (Arizona) and the words from Romeo and Juliet as spoken (by Johanna Kurkela - Tuomas' wife) in this track. The Lunar Prospector mission ended crashing the probe inside the Shoemaker crater, near the southern pole of the moon.
@@jongu71 No, it is Hale-Bopp, because it was the last he'd been working on before his death and during the car crash that killed him, the comet was still visible to the naked eye. I still remember my petrology professor's hard breath when he told us this story in the lecture hall a couple years ago. I think half the class was close to tears while the other half didn't really get it.
Glorious song. Eugene Shoemaker's wife, Carolyn Shoemaker, is also an astronomer. She is still living at age 90. One hopes that she will love this tribute to her late husband.
Shoemaker Levy. He's also the only human being burried on another celestial body, and his urn is inscribed with that quote from Romeo and Juliet. This is an ode to Eugene Shoemaker. He discovered that meteorites cause craters.
@@APREACTS Yeah, you might remember Shoemaker-Levy from the mid-90's. That's when the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 crashed into Jupiter and the whole world of astronomy was able to watch it live. The event was all over the media back then.
The ending is so majestic, like nothing else. So awesome and beautiful. But lets not forget the fantastic drumming. All musicians and vocalists are so excellent in this (like always in Nightwish). This song is an epic masterpiece.
Phenomenal song, lyrically, composition, story telling about Eugene Shoemaker and Floors amazing vocals...such an emotional tribute to Eugene, I’m sure he’s looking down on Nightwish from space and smiling.
Laudato Si (Praise be to you) Ad Astra (To the Stars). The ending is so amazing. Did you notice how at the end the perspective is from The moon (Eugene Shoemakers perspective) as the Earth and the Sun set.
The comet was Shoemaker-Levy 9 that broke into several pieces and collided with Jupiter with an impressive firework as a result. The comet was found by Eugene and Carolyn Shoemaker, and David Levy.
The piece is in honor of Eugem Shoemaker, who as a geologist participated in the preparation of the Apollo missions on the moon. He was produced to participate in missions but was found to be ill and no longer selected. He died in Australia in 1998 in a car accident. In his honor, for his contribution to the preparation of the Apollo missions, the urn with his remains was sent to the moon and is deposited in a lunar crater bearing his name. On the funeral urn is inscribed the quote from Romeo and Juliet that appears in the song and is read by Joanna, Tuomas' wife. The final part, Laudato Si Ad Astra is inspired by the original Laudato Si by Francisco de Asissi, the founder of the Franciscan Order, only here it has no religious connotations but is an ode dedicated to Shoemaker. The final part of the video describes the path taken by the funeral urn to where it is deposited on the Moon and symbolizes the fact that from the place where Shoemaker is he looks at the earth.
This is a tribute to Eugene Shoemaker. Some of Eugene Shoemaker's ashes after he died were taken to the moon to be laid to rest in the Shoemaker crater at the moons southern pole. He's the only human so far to have been laid to rest on a celestial body other than Earth.. On the box his ashes traveled to the moon in was engraved that quote from Romeo and Juliet..
Love that Nightwish always brings an excellent sound quality to their music. This takes me back to jamming Nightwish with my brothers & friends in my late teens. This track is stunning!
This has become my favorite Nightwish Album! Absolutely majestic! So much variety, richness and depth! Your analysis is right in point! Those are the two wow moments of this song, that ending my god!
Wow! I just came here directly after watching your reaction to "Ghost Love Score" and your boy is now a man! You blink and they're all grown up! Mine just turned 17 and it feels like just yesterday I was putting him on the bus to start pre school! It's awesome you and your boy spend time together doing what you both enjoy! Love your honest reactions to the vids. You went from not being sure about the band to actually interviewing Floor!! Amazing!
They sing all three in chorus, if you listen with good headphones Markos voice is little hihger than Troys and it is more on the left. Also Troys quitar played with e-bow is so haunting in the breakdown after second slow chorus. This is absolute masterpiece my top3 🥰
I will have to pay attention to grasp Marko's vocals. Haven't noticed it. As far as our discussions go, this is real life, how we both interact on a daily basis. We go on weird random tangents all the time....so it is natural that it happens in the videos.
Yes, Marko is actually almost completely on the far left. And Floor joins to fill in the "On a stellar sea..." part and is mostly on the right side. Beautiful composition there.
This song is out of this world just pure beutyful! The drums are badass an how can floor sing like that holy shit. It goes into My whole body. Just amazing
This is a tribute to the universe, the moon is just to small...all credit to Shoemaker and the tribute to him, but this is bigger than anything Tuomas has done. Those who this music doesn't resonate to...don't know what will ever!

If you want Floor with Troy, check the acoustic version of Hows the Heart? from Planet Rock. They also sang acoustic Nemo. I do not think you already did it.
Eugene Shoemaker is his name and the comet is Shoemaker-Levy 9. The narrator there is Tuomas's wife Johanna Kurkela, who is also a famous singer with angelic voice and elvish appearance. Very impressive ending, indeed!
There are lots of Nightwish songs I listen to when I’m writing. They’re just amazing and it’s so great to write to them, they give a boost to my fantasy and creativity. This track however? I can’t write to it. The end is so powerful and it sucks me in so much that I can’t write to it. And I too hear it as a climax, a sorrow moment before something really bad happens / the world ends, and you just can’t look away from it. I feel like that. I can’t detach myself enough from the song to write, I can’t “look away”. And honestly that’s amazing, not every song can do that to me. Just proves how amazing and captivating Nightwish really is.
That Amorphis shirt is hilarious 😂 I also don't get how some have been saying this album doesn't have enough guitar work on it? WTF are they listening to?
My thoughts exactly and I think it will sound awesome when played live as the band instruments come more to the fore. What I would say though is that the orchestral elements tend to overshadow the guitar work a bit and that tends to be the case since they have moved more and more into the large orchestrations.
I love every song with Nightwish in some way. Some ofc means more and is heard more.. But I have to admit, this song is at the very top. its everything that is nightwish. The story behind it, the deep meaning gives something to the song before it begins. And with that the way toumas play with words here is just out of this world ( so to speak ) the way words is used to this melody is science in it self. And then the underlying deeper meaning. And then it has the classic amazing NW drops and changes, the tone and the melody just hook you on from the start.. The hauting "breakdown", Like many other nightwish songs this is a masterpiece.. and its hard to speak of what song is best because it all depends. but this song is something special even among other nightwish songs. At least to me.
There’s no other band out there that can reach into their tool bag of talent and pull out their Valkyrie wielded Mjölnir for the crescendo of their opus.
Hi Guys! :) I'll tell you something. Now on Friday (April 24) I did a "For All Mankind" series marathon at home. Really like this one a song of two halves definitely one of the best best on the album. Floor's vocals are of the rickter scale especially considering she says she doesn't much like singing operatic vocals. Enjoyed the review keep up the the good work guys

Actually, according to Tuomas it is a tripple harmony on every songs choruses, so on every songs chorus its Floor, Troy and Marco all singing together
Marco sings the lowest part on all of the choruses except perhaps Endlessness
To me, the ending feels like embracing a bittersweet ending. There's a very prominent sorrow, but it still feels like there's serenity beneath it all.

That Latin thing in the end, "Laudato si ad astra" means "Praised be the stars" or Praise to the stars. Something along those lines.
