  • Out Run (アウト ラン Auto Ran?) is an arcade game released by Sega in 1986. It was designed by Yu Suzuki and developed by Sega AM2. The game was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the best-selling video games of its time[5][6] and winning the Golden Joystick Award for Game of the Year.[6][7] It is notable for its innovative hardware (including a moving cabinet), pioneering graphics and music, innovative features such as offering the player choices in both soundtrack and non-linear routes, and its strong theme of luxury and relaxation. In retrospective interviews, Yu Suzuki has classified Out Run not as a racing game, but as a "driving" game.

First time I've seen the finish - after all that hard work the driver is simply thrown and dropped!

This brings back so many happy memories of Saturday afternoon in the arcade with a bag of 10p coins :-)

I'm impressed with how good this looked for the time. But, with all of the effects they threw in, I'm disappointed that they felt the need to flip the car sprite when moving left or right.
It already looks weird with the car popping back and forth, since the sprite is not centered up properly, but the horse keeps switchinng directions. Just seems like a weird oversight or tech limitation.

      Probably a memory limitation.
They had to work so hard to get everything to fit.

I know the developers wanted more time to implement more things like oncoming traffic etc I think it's perfect as it is with a clean sprite look where as Turbo Outrun just seems a mess of sprites.
