In the multiverse, rare beings are born with a spark. If triggered by traumatic events, these beings could ascend to Planeswalkers, powerful mages able to travel between... planes. You get it.
One Planeswalker, Dyfed, visited Dominaria, encountering Yawgmoth and the Thran Empire. Yawgmoth recently discovered Thran's power source, powerstones, caused the disease phthisis, manufactured a cure and rose to power. Unfortunately, Yawgmoth dabbled in abominations and his former "patients" revolted. Yawgmoth asked Dyfed to find him a new plane to continue "curing" his people and Dyfed found Phyrexia. Yawgmoth fused with Phyrexia's core becoming god-like and killed Dyfed when she discovered his experiments. Thankfully, Rebbec, Yawgmoth's former ally, sealed the portal to Phyrexia with a powerstone.
Millenia later, brothers Urza and Mishra searched Thran ruins, discovered a powerstone, broke it in two and parted ways, unaware of the portal. Urza rose to Warlord of Yotia, while Mishra would rule the Fallaji, eventually going to war. But Urza noticed Mishra had been corrupted by Phyrexians. Enraged, Urza used the Golgothian Sylex, killing Mishra and both armies, plunging the land into an Ice Age, and causing their stones to become lodged in his eyes, the trauma ascending Urza to Planeswalker.
Now a vengeful mage, Urza travels the multiverse for knowledge and allies in trampling Phyrexia but Yawgmoth's had a few millennia to cook up some nasty creatures of his own.

200 hours of lore in a minute later... and that catches us up on what sorens been up to on innistrad
Congrats, you covered the first years of MTG, just another 20 to go.

Man that's complicated
There are wo'ids on those things?
The lore covered goes up through the Urza plotline, which depending on how you want to measure it means it covers things leading up to the Weatherlight (whose expansion was 1997) or Urza block (1998), or the Invasion block (1999). Seeing how that is between 19-21 years ago I averaged it out to 20.
The lore video just covered the early days of MTG. All the stuff the put in the video was wrapped up 90s. The video didn't even mention:
-The magic flying boat that could planeswalk that Urza built
-Urza recruited 9 planeswalkers with attitude and built them all giant robots to fight Yawgamoth
-The robotman Urza built ended up getting Urza's eyes lodged in his chest (and that somehow turned him into a Planeswalker)
-All the nonsense mentioned here ended up causing time-rifts that brought back to life a 10,000 year old super scheming evil wizard dragon planeswalker
-In order to close the time rifts planeswalkers had to sacrifice the sparks
-In closing one rift the robotman Urza built found Yawgmoth's oil on him, which slowly turned him into a new Yawgmoth (and the plane he made into a New Phyrexia)
And none of what I mentioned has happened in the last 7 years of the lore. In fact of all the nonsense only the-robotman-Urza-built-who-stopped-being-a-planeswalker-and-almost-became-a-new-Yawgmoth-but-was-turned-back-into-a-planeswalker-via-the-sacrifice-of-another-planeswalker (Karn) and the 10,000-year-old-scheming-evil-wizard-dragon-planeswalker (Nicol Bolas) are relevant in the current game... well, actually they just brought back the magic flying boat.
MTG lore is weird and stupid.

I've never been so lost like right now. I just wanted to play nerdpoker: the gatherin.
One day they will cover the adventures of magic super friends and the stealing of a scroll that lead to the release of multiversal eldritch horrors planned by a salty dragon pharaoh who was killed but came back to life only to be defeated by a white lion man who sought revenge for the death of his brother.
You lost me after like 2 seconds.
I only actually understood it because it's all stuff I knew already. the gist of it is that planeswalkers travel to alternate realities, called planes, and inevitably make life worse for people on that plane. also this covers maybe 10 years of the the 25 year story
Jacob Schmidt To be Fair, that’s not even the up to date version..... that’s like the version from 20 years ago..... things have only accelerated from there. Basically anything magical you can think of, has very likely already happened. Anything.

As someone whos bought MTG cards since Ice Age and all of the lore books including the Dark Horse and Armada comics, I can state that everything in this is true.
Whoever put the White Plague on the Minotaur, You get an extra cookie. That was quite the deep cut.
The only gripe I have is that the powercore held Glacian, Rebbec's husband, and his spark. Urza didn't awaken a spark, he fused with Glacian.
Urza screaming with new eyes was kinda funny. dominara has lots of history to show.
He's got 'special eyes".

That’s not even the up to date version, that’s version I learned 15 years ago..... And the story only accelerated since then..... Like that was the first chapter and now we are at Book 23.... Returning to my favorite Plane of Existence.... for the second time. Ravnica Aka Magical Metropolises(magical city that covers the planet a few times over.) (crazy is just a tiny sip of coffee of where we are now.) (Seriously a tiny sip)

This is old lore, relevent in the 90s/early 2000s. Why not talk about Nicol Bolas, and the Gatewatch, as the Ravnica story seems to be moving to a showdown there?
because the gatewatch is the worst thing to happen to mtg lore, while the brothers war was probably the best

MtG Lore is just the general concept. Like the lore of a core set. This was just Thran through Weatherlight.

Oh god, this is what I need. I only read Moons of Mirrodin (Book 1 of Mirrodin block 1?), and I wanted to know wtf was going on, but didn't want to read all that stuff. Even Wikipedia got long. I know Mirrodin is now new Pirexia, and Glissa got way more interesting, but I started getting lost after a bit of Endrazi. Please do more!

Pretty sure only Wizards can become Planeswalkers, so it's like a 1 in 1k chance of a 1 in 1k chance sorta deal.
Second, I coulda swore Urza was a Planeswalker long before his eyes were replaced with Powerstones. He'd visited Phyrexia and whatnot before becoming the Blind Seer, and he'd commented on being centuries old in a lot of the flavor text.
He wasn't the Blind Seer until far into the Gerard and Co. adventures on the Weatherlight. It's not mentioned initially that that is what happened to his eyes, but it's a revelation later on during the Invasion.
And any sentient being can become a planeswalker, it just so happens most people in the multiverse can use magic, making almost everyone technically a wizard.
