    pretty much a prefect solo. punchy, tells a story, a tad flashy, but still musical, and most importantly, follows the changes!

    Elliot Easton aint no joke , its easy to come close to playing his solos right, whats not easy is actually playing them exactly as he does, which is why i'm grateful for your channel. nevermind the fact i'm older than you by a few years, you're definitely my favorite uncle

  • @PsychologyWorksOfficial

    Thanks, I've wanted to learn this solo since I first started learning lead a few years ago. Easton and the Cars were my favorite in the 80s.

    this is such a great solo which combines lot's of techniques, it's frazing and it rocks! Been struggling with it ever since I first heard it but before you can actually play it, there's a lot to learn from all sorts of styles and that's just what Elliot was doing. However, you nailed a lot here, Uncle Ben. Ever so grateful!

    Awesome. I learned this recently but was moving to a higher position on the 2-3 strings versus your lower position on 1-2-3 strings. Doing it the way you show is much easier (and apparently CORRECT). Thanks!

  • @JunkYour925

    Thanks! It confirms how I broke it down. That string on string country style bend in position 4 (C shape) is a beeeeeotch to play (bend and stretch) so I do just that part in position 1 up the neck where the strings are easier to bend and the structure makes more sense. It’s just a natural there i think plus I carry heavy strings most of the time. Still can’t figure precisely how he plays that note lead in starting at 3:48 but not really that important. He’s definitely striking that note (B) twice then quickly sliding up the string set in pseudo double stops (3rds) for sure. That’s clear to hear. What a great melodic solo. Always thought that since it first came out. Everyone does.

    GREAT vidja as always Uncle Ben... wow, like you, i've always played this in the wrong position. I hear EMaj, and immediately start to wank in the C#m Panasonic box in the 9th position. Easton's chord following is unmatched... that C note at the end of the first phrase (following the G#M ) always made the solo for me... recognizing you're playing over G#Maj instead of the "in key" G#m and hitting that C (instead of the B) note to really solidify the chord.... sickness.... it made my step mom moist!

I have the LP and a couple of turntables - once, at a party - I dropped this track directly after James Brown's 'Sex Machine,' and the girls on the dance floor went wild! The immediacy of the band, and the switch of genre, the volume increase - heavy weight LP recorded well, deeply grooved HITS HARRRRRRD... People scream! The CARS have a tightness that rivals and rolls with the Godfather of Soul. Can't wait to master Easton's gem 🤞 Thank YOU sir. - Kent

    I'd love to know if it was intentional, but the solo to Paper Machete by QotSA has a very similar cadence and feel to this solo...even if it's quite different in terms of note choice/key. And I mean that as a huge compliment!
    I've found these types of solos that follow the changes with very deliberate phrasing to be in their own category. They're genuinely like little stories within the song rather than just using and abusing licks/cliches, and you can break them up into very distinct sections.
    A lot of Steely Dan solos have this quality (Larry Carlton's Kid Charlemagne solo being the most famous candidate).

    So as a bass player stuck indoors with this whole Covid thing, I decided to expand to guitar as well. I used this video to try to sort out that particular solo. I got pretty decent at it... so I thought I would record it. For the fourth time (in the two months it's taken me to get this right) that full step bend on the 7th fret high E string has caused me to pop the string. Even with the face mask, the guys in the music store are starting to recognize me. Am I doing something wrong? Is there some sort of way to bend strings I'm not aware of that will prolong their life? Or do I just suck?

    • @BenEller
      @BenEller  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey buddy. Very likely your bridge has a rough spot on it where the string crosses over the saddle. Get some really fine grit sandpaper, and give the saddle slot a few light passes. Should fix it up.

      yeah man, thats EMG's for you... they're SUPER high output, you'll never get a real crystal clean tone. If there is a way to coil split them that could help, and don't be afraid to roll the volume knob down on your guitar.

      Uncle Ben thanks for replying me ... As u said i tried to lower my guitars volume down but it doesn't really make that much of a difference. And the split coil isn't a option here cause my pickups are active humbucker. If there is any other solution pls tell me. Or if u can show how to split coils in a active humbucker that would be good. Cause i have stopped playing licks and started to waste my time on fixing my guitar tone!!!!

      lol I tried learning it on 11s and it must have taken me at least 3x as long just to build the strength to do the bends. After I remembered I just took it on as a challenge rather than just switching to a lighter gauge guitar.
